I want to know. I dont have any supplies or anything, I just started (I'm 13). I have a table that's forbidden to anybody else but me-and I dust it regurally, it hold's my figurens and is a dresser top really. How do you set up an altar with basic normal everyday supplies???

People set their altars up differently than other people. There are some books that have pictures of an altar that you could use kinda as a guideline. I'll scan one of them if you'd like.

Edit: Here's the picture from one of the books:

Oh, I see. I'm guessing your parents don't know about it then?

Correct. I have lost most intrest in the Catholic church, and Wicca makes much more sense to me.

I understand what that's like. I use to be Baptist. I lost interest in Christian religions all together about 2 years ago and got involved in Wicca. I'm not sure if my dad knows about it, but the rest of my family does. I'm not sure they really approve of it, especially my mom, but they never bring it up. So I guess they've learned to accept it.

Like Maggie said, there are lots of books, or websites, and various other resources that will give you guidelines for setting up an altar- but if you're worried about not having the supplies, or you don't want others seeing it for what it really is (ie. religious parents ninja ), then be creative (Or abstract- whatever term you think is more suitable).

A seashell makes a great incense censer, and can also represent the element of water. A feather can represent air, if you don't want to be caught burning incense, and flowers can represent earth, if your parents might think a dish of salt is a little odd. Certain crystals that are linked to specific elements can be used to represent the elements- such as Garnet for fire, and so on (I know there's a thread somewhere around here with this information- crystal correspondances I mean).

Furthermore, set your altar up how it looks best to you- if you're uncertain then by all means, find a picture like the one Maggie's provided, or get one off the internet-- but remember that the things that work best in magick are those that feel natural to you. mrgreen

whee If that table is already for you, and you've got your own figurines on it then it techincally is already your altar. It doesn't have to be made a 'set way' - don't get confused by that. If it harms none, then anything is fine: although generally little tidbits to represent the elements and the lord and lady help. If you wish to have them in their coresponding directions then the most basic would be:

north - earth - flowers, salt, soil, green candle, green ribbon, green pencil.

east - air - feathers, incense, wand (probably not a good idea for you, but twig type looking things can be found in any craft store these days - and baskets full of flowers and fruit. I wonder where that idea came from..) Anyway. Yellow candle, yellow pencil, and picture of something with wings..

south
- fire - candles, red, a picture of fire, matches

west - water - sea shells (Jess, you stole my censor idea whee ), blue, water, blue water, picture of water, salt..

Those aren't hard and fast rules. Be creative. It doesn't have to look anything like the element to anything else - just something that will represent the element presonally for yourself.

To find out the crystals correspondences, the link can be found here

Good luck, and have fun!

I don't like Catholic's view on sex, homosexuals, birth control, the Da Vinci Code, and other things.

THANK YOU EVERYBODY!

whee That's alright - it's what we're here for. I recently just renovated my own altar, so I know what it's like.
