As some of you may know (actually, if you don't know, you're an idiot ^_^; ) Miss L does mini-Japanese lessons on the guild. Miss L loves foreign languages. >_>;
Guess what? So do them crazy Japanese! :O
Gogaku sukuru, foreign langauage schools, are really common nowadays. Also Eikaiwas. (english conversation schools)
Miss L is concerned because Americans don't have these sorts of schools. Of course we have universities that teach foreign languages, but not specific places. This frustrates her too, since she's too young to go to a university. ;_;''
Anyway.
Discuss: ~Benefits Of Foreign Language Schools ~Why American doesn't have 'em ~Anything concerning 'gogakus'.

American's would be so much more advanced and intelligent if we had like a required forgein launguage class in as early as elementary school @__@
It's easier to learn new launguages when you're younger, or so they say >__>;;

It's easier to learn new launguages when you're younger, or so they say >__>;; I always figured that meant like.. two or three as in younger. @_@ I guess it might not, but I do wish we had it in elementary skool. > biggrin I don't like how there aren't a lot of options. For example, I met a guy who was from some obscure country that had their own language.. and I couldn't just go to highschool or college and learn it. ;_;'
He spoke English, as a side note.

At my school, the only other foreign language we can learn is Spanish and French. They just introduced the French class this year....I like to learn different languages but, I hate the lack of choice at our school...but it's really not the schools fault, they don't have enough money for the teachers and books and other stuff like that...If we could get more funding for education from the government...that would solve most of the problems I think....

You can learn a foreign language without an accent if you hear it and start speaking it (ideally from a native speaker) before you are about 6 or 7. It is still easy to pick up languages with some trace of accent until puberty.* Some people are better than others, and it's been my experience that people who are good at music are better at language speaking with less of an accent.
More and more schools are starting early language classes, but that doesn't really help those of us who missed out. sad
*Edit: Wacky hormones!

stellacadente So besides English, what other foreign languages are popular to learn in Japan?? Haha. That's what makes me want to go to Japan. So I can brag about my kill'ar English skil-zahs. xD But seriously they only offer Spanish and French at my highschool and just Spanish at my Middle school. I'm going into my 4th year of Spanish. emo I can't just drop it now seeing as Spanish is the second most popular language in- on Earth. I'd love to learn every language possible. Excluding the african languages though. I don't plan on going anywhere near thurr. D:

There are a few small language schools. I know there is at least one Japanese language school in Seattle... somewhere... that mostly focuses on little kids, but also has some adult classes.
Also, since English evolved into the "Universal Language of Business," there hasn't been a need for most Americans to learn a second language because anywhere that they go- apart from maybe third-world countries- someone will speak English.
Americans also tend to be stubborn and selfish with a kind of "They should conform to me" attitude, Oh don't deny it, you know it's true. so humbling themselves enough to learn another language or another culture is somewhat out-of-character.
I'm not saying that Americans are bad or anything, I'm just trying to offer an opinion based on our culture and habits.

From what I hear among those I know who are from or living in Japan, the main foreign languages learned by them are;
English Chinese Korean German French and Italian...
I think Spanish is on the list, too.
Maybe longer, who knows :]
I'm for those kinds of school in America...
There is a college that has a high school that lets you take any language you want, but they're so unfair, you have to enter in Sophomore year or not at all.
So I know have to wait until Senior year next year before I can take classes there.
Of course, I'mma take Japanese. I know enough to actually be able to travel there like I am in December, but I want to be able to speak it more often than english...
There are two facilities here in my town that teach Japanese, but one is for kids only, and the other one is a bit expensive for little time given. D: D:
...Those kinds of things would benefit us more
