What do you guys think of downloading stuff? Legally and otherwise? Like, how do you feel about it? Games, of course, but music too.
Discuss.

Discuss. personally it depends on the game, if its something that people horde, or the stores are charging way to much for, I say its alright as long as you buy an actual copy sooner or later, otherwise, I guess its ok to an extent, if its one game I wouldn't worry, but when you start downloading everything that comes out, that's just being cheap. As for music, that's a little different, they overcharge the CDs anyways, and most artists are pro people sharing, so I have no problems with it myself ^^;;

I download music more than games, and yes, it's almost robbery getting kids that are like below grade 10 or whenever it is they get a job, $20 for 14 tracks and then if you only like some of them...ya it sure does suck. But once you get a job and all that you should at least buy cds once in a while. Specially from bands that are just getting on their feet and all that.

I don't d/l games too much, but when I do, they're old and hard to find. Or imports, so yeah, not much of a problem there. If it's a new game for a system that isn't dead, I don't support it though, because the industry really needs support.
Music? I'm for d/ling music. Definitely. I do think, however, that if you like the songs/band enough to go out and buy the disc to support them.
For someone like myself who listens to a lot of import music (Japanese, German, Scandinavian, Cuban. . . underground stuff mostly), it's really helpful. I mean, most of the cds I get are in the 30 dollar range because they're imports (don't know why we don't get much industrial here. >.< ) so I'm not going to risk blowing 30 bucks on a disc with like one track that I really like. So I sample the music online and once I have the cash for it, I buy the disc.

Yea, Im for it like I said, but the others bring up the other point, personally if you really like a band, then buy their CD ^^ I can understand if the band has only like one song that you like, or you just plain don't have the money at the time because of expenses, then a CD or two isn't going ot affect things, but I don't like seeing people doing nothing but downloading music. It just shows they are to cheap to go out and buy a CD somewhere along the way. ::shrugs:: just my opinion ^^;;

Understandable, and appreciated. Thanks, y'all.
So it's ok if I mention things I've downloaded, whether or not it's.. right? =||

I stay away from downloading games, unless their ROMs. I have many, many ROMs and .isos. Majority of the games I enjoy you have to buy though, and if you try to be cheap and find a crack of it, you'll instead find yourself a nice virus or trojan.
As for music, well. I love my playlist of 8000 MP3s. I'm always finding new bands and songs that peak my interest and adding them to my playlist. If I download an entire discography of a band, which I do a lot, I'll go out and buy some of their merch, be it CDs, hoodies or whatever to promote them. If I only download a few tracks, then I don't feel the need to put money in their pockets.
Edit: Man this is an old thread. Some serious searching of the archive. xD

I dont think that it is bad. I mean if its there and no one is going to take it why not. I dont because they might have some virus that I wont be able to get out of my system so I try not to download. Then on the other hand you can get in trouble if you download something wrong. The other stuff that you pay for sometimes isnt what you thought it was going to be. That I think is a nother downside to downloading.

I grew up when shareware games were pretty popular, so the act of copying games to share amongst friends just seems so natural to me, even though it's obviously not legal. If a game's really worth it, I often end up buying it anyway because I'm a sucker for having an actual box I can add to my library, especially when it comes with fun extras like cloth maps and figurines and stuff. whee
I do tend to download games as well, but usually they're ROMs. I download SNES & Master System ROMs to catch up on any good games I missed getting for those systems when I was a kid (and to keep in mind in case I see them on eBay now), I download GBA ROMs to transfer to my flash cartridge because I think the price of GBA games is too high considering the small amount of enjoyment the vast majority of them actually give, and I download PSX ISOs to burn & play on my modded console because plenty of great games never got a PAL release. I also download PC abandonware for the sake of nostalgia, coz I'm a big fan of many games from the late 80s-mid90s that I've lost my own copy of. smile
I've been downloading mp3s for 8 years now, and though I've definitely still bought plenty of CDs since I started, at this point I actually don't remember when the last time was... quite a while ago, anyway. confused They just seem too expensive for the amount of music you get, and unless I really like a band, or they publish their music independently & I want to support them, it's not worth it to me. Legal downloading is a nice idea, but I can't say I've ever looked into it. I get the feeling the majority of the music I like wouldn't be found in the iTunes store anyway.

I'm all for downloading roms of old systems. It's so hard to get the orignal console, and if you do manage to find one WITH games they hardly ever work.
Music is trickier. I download it all the time, but I still think the artist deserves some kind of monetary compensaion, that's their job and it is stealing from them. But I don't think the programs used to download music should be banned, I've found tons of stuff I could never buy by using them and not all of it was illegal. Also is they do make good stuff and I like enough of their songs, I'll buy a cd, but not just for 1 song

I dont download games really on my computer if I can play them on a system because that would just bore me. As for music I will download that without feeling bad. CD's are so expensive and I usually dont like all the songs on the CD anyways. Why pay money for something you dont like?

I don't get illegal games. A friend of mine did and the quality sucked or she had incomplete games! I'd feel bad too. I prefer just buying games.
Same goes for movies btw. I prefer buying them rather then downloading them. FFVII was downloaded though, but I bought the dvd when it came out.
As for music - if I really like a reasonable ammount of songs I'll buy a cd. I'm not going to pay for a cd when I only like one song!
And it's legal in my country to download music xd

For games, it depends. I'm all for downloading older games like the NES or Genesis, because of the rarity and price and such. But if it's a newer game for a current gan-console or something of the like, then I'd rather buy them. It would make me buying a console worthwhile. ^_^
As for music, I say anything goes. I usually don't want an entire CD's tracks, so for me buying them for 20 bucks is a little much for me.
