((Credit for this story goes to the write Richard Lee Byers, who has so far created an awesome 2 books of a trilogy. I can't wait for the last one.
This RP is loosely based on his story.))
There have been rumours and, lately, evidence that every few thousand years, all the dragons in the world went berserk and started killing everything non-draconic. Whole kingdoms fell to the rampaging dragons and some villages survived the destruction.
During each time the rage fell upon the dragons, every dragon would start working together to destroy everything else. Gold, Red, Silver, Black, Bronze, Blue, Copper, White, Brass and Green. Even the rare dragons, including the Song and Fairy dragons, appeared and went on their destructive rampage.
This was all four thousand years ago, of course. Only texts and songs remained mentioning the rampage, the Year of the Rogue Dragons.
Since the last rampage, people had rebuilt empires, fought for land and colonised everywhere they could. Occasionally a dragon would appear and heroes or hunters would be close on its trail.
And then, without warning, swarms of chromatic dragons started attacking towns. The green, black and red dragons were most common in the more inhabited areas, the warm climates. In the arctic regions whites started attacking villages in groups. Near the edges of continents, blues started attacking coastal towns and boats.
A new Year of the Rogue Dragons had come to the world.
Heroes and armies alike moved to stop the dragons slaughter. Whole armies crumbled under the might of a flight of dragons.
And through it all, the metallic dragons sat back and watched, attempting to resist the rage that would eventually consume them.
The meeting of all metallic and goodly dragons decided to induce magical sleep on their numbers, so that they didn't have to resist the rage. One of their numbers would always be on watch and would wake another up when the urge became stronger and harder to resist.
Some of the metallic dragons didn't agree to this however. They flew out in search of a way to defeat the rage that was eating at their resolve.
In another part of the world, a group of wizards discovered that the rage would continue and never abate, unless the source of this rage was found and neutralised. The wizards hired groups of mercenaries to search various sites for clues.
This is where your characters come in. They are about to set out for one of these sites, looking for any clues to the unnatural rage that is falling on the dragons.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What you need to know about Dragons:
There are three types of dragons.
Metallic, the goodly dragons. These dragons usually stay far from any inhabited regions and never eat flesh of sentient creatures. Among their colours are Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper and Brass.
Chromatic, the evil dragons who usually think of only themselves, where their next meal is coming from and about killing. Among their colours are Red, Black, Blue, Green and White. There are other types of chromatic dragons, usually sub-types of the main colours. These include Fang, Magma, Fire, Earth and sun.
Neutral dragons make up the last group. These dragons do what they want, but are generally good. Among their types are the purple Song dragons, the miniature Fairy dragons and the half breeds and Pseudo dragons.
Gold: Gold dragons are graceful, sinuous and wise. They hate injustice and foul play, often embarking on self-appointed quests to promote good. A gold dragons usually assumes the guise of a human or animal.
Silver: Silver dragons are regal and statuesque. They cheerfully assist good creatures in genuine need and often take the forms of kindly old men or fair damsels when associating with humans.
Brass: Brass dragons are talkative and have supple, expressive lips. They have useful information, but usually share it only after long rambling and hinting for a gift.
Bronze: Bronze dragons are inquisitive and enjoy polymorphing into small, friendly animals to observer adventurers. They are fascinated by warfare, eagerly joining an army for a just cause - and good pay.
Copper: Copper dragons are incorrigible pranksters, joke tellers and riddlers. Most are good-natured but also have a covetous streak. They are powerful jumpers and climbers, with massive thighs and shoulders.
Red: Red dragons are the most covetous of all dragons, forever seeking to increase their treasure hoards. They are exceptionally vain, which is reflected in their proud bearing and disdainful expression.
Black: Black dragons are evil-tempered, cunning and malevolent, characteristics that are reflected in their crafty, sinister faces. They are sometimes known as "Skull dragons" because of their deep-socketed eyes and distinctive nasal opening.
Blue: Blue dragons are vain and territorial. They are one of the dragon varieties best adapted to digging into sand. They live in rocky outcrops in the middle of deserts.
Green: Green dragons are belligerent and tend to attack without provocation. Their fierce, toothy jaws and arrogant crests warn other creatures of their aggressive nature.
White: Among the smallest and least intelligent of dragonkind, most white dragons are simply animalistic predators. Their faces express single-minded ferocity rather than the shrewdness of their more powerful kin.
Fang: The fang dragon is a cousin of the green and black dragons. Mottled grey-brown skin and scales like razors, the fang dragon has spikes running along it's whole body, down to it's sharper claws and the tip of it's tail. The fang dragon doesn't have a breath weapon, but it makes up with sheer brute force.
Magma: Magma dragons are a relative of the red dragons. These dragons live under the crust of the earth and sometimes appear on the surface. Their skin is like cooling magma and they radiate heat hotter than any fire, even enough to start small fires in it's vicinity.
Fire: Another relative of the red dragons, Fire dragons glow like fresh iron from a forge. Like the magma dragons, fire dragons radiate heat, but to a lesser level. They are small and fast and have a deadly, chaotic temperament. It's their pleasure to set things alight, just to watch them burn.
Earth: The earth dragon is a relative of the green dragon. Earth dragons are slow movers, but are powerhouses when it comes to fighting. When sitting still, their rough skin hides them against almost any rocky area. They are nowhere near as beautiful as their scaled cousins, but are more heavily armored than the oldest of Golds.
Sun: The sun dragons are in a class of their own. Relative to both red and gold, these titans are rarely seen. No one knows where they live and, if they did, the sundrakes probably would have killed them as soon as they found out. Sun dragons have eight legs and a bright yellow hide. From the tips of their wings, forehead ridges, spine, tip of their tail and their claws, a bright pinpoint of light rests. The effect is close to blinding for anyone who isn't shielded. Sundrakes are powerhouses of magic and strength.
Song: Song dragons, being about the same size of copper dragons, are usually overlooked. Their lavender, purple or light blue, sparkly skin is occasionally mistaken for a chromatic dragon. Song dragons prefer to wear their human skin and travel around the world entertaining the sentient races with their voices.
Fairy: Fairy dragons are the smallest of all dragons, the largest being three foot from snout to tail. They are tricksters and prefer their forests over anything else. They are about as harmful as cats and prefer eating bugs over anything else.
Pseudodragons: These dragons are about the same size of fairy dragons. They resemble miniature red dragons, but are red-brown in colour rather than deep red. They are highly playful and enjoy human company. They eat scraps of food, mostly meat.
Half-dragons: A few dragons have bred with humans, elves and the like and have produced offspring. These creatures are like their lesser parents in basic form, with their greater parents wings, eyes and sometimes scales.
An ogre isn't not going to kill humans just because dragons are rampaging. Also, I do not want half dragons without my approval. If you want to be a half dragon, remember that you will be affected by the rage too. Class: You can be almost any class you want. Basic classes include: Barbarian, Bard, Cleric (White mage), Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue (Thief), Sorcerer and Wizard. There are many extra classes that require the basic skills of each of these classes. These classes shape how you fight, weapons you wield and your place in society. Again, these are subject o my approval. Special abilities: These are subject to approval, no matter what. A fighter can have a couple of basic special abilities, but they would be granted by magical items. Other Equipment: This includes magical items and anything else your character would have.
Profiles: Screen name: Panthera_Enigma Character name: Octavia Race: Human Age: 25 Gender: Female Class: Cleric of the god Zerlinda (Goddess of the Beautiful Dawn. Symbol is a sun and a hill (Sunrise)) Weapons: Ranseur, enchanted with holiness and supernatural sharpness, sharp enough to cut dragon scales. Also enchanted to fold down into three parts for easy storage. Special abilities: Has a magical ability to 'kiss the booboo better', among other things. (Divine Spells, given to her by her goddess) Appearance: OctaviaPersonality: Kind and caring, Octavia is a bastion of goodness for those around her. She doesn't like using her weapon, but if she must, she will. She prefers her spells and enchanting others to fight better and healing them from a distance. Other Equipment:- Amulet of quick escape. This item allows Octavia to warp out of danger a few times a day, leaving a major image of herself behind to confuse her enemies. The ring allows her to teleport anywhere within sight within a mile. - Her dress. Her dress is enchanted with the ability to ignore most movement hindering terrain and spells. For example, she would be able to move through tall grass, thick brush and even the spell Spider web, without impediment or disturbance. This gives her more stealth on the battlefield. Her dress is also enchanted with a force field similar to bracers of armor. It creates an effect that deflects most mundane and natural attacks. - Ring of Shielding. This ring allows Octavia to create an invisible tower shield in front of her a few times per day. This shield blocks most forms off attacks, but can only take a certain amount of damage. - Ring of the Hive Mind. This ring is formed of brownish-red substance like horn or chitin, resembling the carapace of a formian. Anyone wearing a ring of the hive mind, within another character wearing another ring, can communicate telepathically between themselves, and their minds mesh in a close joining. If one such character in a group is not flat-footed, none of them are. No such character in a group is considered flanked unless all of them are. Note: Octavia works with Urson and Loraya. Screen name: Panthera_Enigma Character name: Urson Race: Half-orc Age: 23 Gender: Male Class: Fighter/Barbarian Weapons: Great sword magically enchanted to release a powerful sonic blast that causes immense structural damage to the protection (armor or scales) of the area struck and is always sharp even though it is enchanted not to look it and a long sword of identical enchantments. Special abilities: Large (stronger tougher, but a little slower) any action that requires strength, (jumping, breaking a door...ect) he excels at. Appearance:UrsonPersonality:Always calm and collected (unless raging) is a well 'weathered' fighter and knows many different tactics to take on many different types of foe Other Equipment:- Armor: this is a suit of mithril full plate that is glammerd to look like an overcoat and provides high resistance against spells. - Belt of giant strength. This provides Urson with extra strength - Braces of armor. These items provide a force field effect that deflects most mundane and natural attacks. - Weightless scabbard x2. Any swords sheathed in these weigh almost nothing. - Ring of the Hive Mind. This ring is formed of brownish-red substance like horn or chitin, resembling the carapace of a formian. Anyone wearing a ring of the hive mind, within another character wearing another ring, can communicate telepathically between themselves, and their minds mesh in a close joining. If one such character in a group is not flat-footed, none of them are. No such character in a group is considered flanked unless all of them are. Note: Urson works with Loraya and Octavia Screen name: Panthera_Enigma Character name: Loraya Race: Human Age: 21 Gender: Female Class: Rogue/shadow dancer Weapons: Two hand crossbows, both made out of Ebony and enchanted metal. The pair of crossbows are magically enchanted with a fine wire between the bolts. When fired, the bolts fly apart and the wire expands into a magical net that, when contact with flesh, becomes heavier and wraps around the target. A guisarme that is enchanted with speed and collapses in on itself for better carrying and it can quickly be snapped back to its full length with a "flick o' the wrist". It is made out of bones from dragons. Special abilities: Dead eye (when aiming her shots, unless majorly interfered with, will not miss) Shadow jump (teleports through shadows) brilliant hiding skills and an amazing acrobat Appearance:LorayaPersonality: Loraya is quiet and this reflects in her abilities. She's loyal to the group and won't say die. She enjoys combat about as much as Marcus does, but prefers to use her skills in other ways, like looting the dragons den without them knowing. She does enjoy one thing though, which is to dance in public, making the men's eyes water at her provocative dancing. Other Equipment:- Armor. Loraya's studded dragon-hide armor is sentient and highly magical. The studs are painted red and, two times a day, she can expel all or a few of these spikes, shredding things around her. The armor gives of strong emotions and heals Loraya occasionally. On top of all of this, its strongest magical property is that most dragons can't see her when she's wearing it, except if she allows them to or they counter the magic of the armor. - Wings of flying. This magical cloak allows Loraya to produce a pair of bat-like wings and fly around. This gives her the ability to sneak up on some dragons and pin them better with her nets. - Boots of springing and striding. These boots make Loraya much faster on her feet. They double her land movement when she activates them. They work for a total of one hour a day. - Ring of Shadowjump. This ring increases Loraya's ability to warp through shadows. - Ring of the Hive Mind. This ring is formed of brownish-red substance like horn or chitin, resembling the carapace of a formian. Anyone wearing a ring of the hive mind, within another character wearing another ring, can communicate telepathically between themselves, and their minds mesh in a close joining. If one such character in a group is not flat-footed, none of them are. No such character in a group is considered flanked unless allof them are. Note: Loraya works with Urson and Octavia
Last time I use this character, I promise...
Character name: Rayel Race: Human Age: early thirties Gender: Female Class: Paladin Weapons: Sword of Damascus steel, blessed to do extra damage to the undead Special abilities: Typical paladin abilites: lay on hands, flaming sword, shield, turn undead, and my personal favorite, SMITE!!!!! Has very minor thieving abilities, and a strange thing with the number five... Appearance: Has long blonde hair and a wellformed figure, quite beautiful until she turns to face you. Rayel is severely disfigured by burns, but clear blue eyes peer out from her charbroiled face. Personality: A deeply pious woman, for none are more devoted than the once fallen. The woman loves to laugh and adores music, having a good voice herself. Also loves to dance, although she has no ability. Often laughs at her own disfigurement; however, she often finds an excuse to wear her helmet. Although not particularly intelligent, the woman makes up for it in wisdom and patience. Has a deep connection with her horse, Cheiron. Other Equipment: Rayel bears her shield with great pride, which has a Cross Crosslet Fitchee on a field of vert and argent and two yew trees. Wears thick armor, bloody and dented, which she refuses to wash or get rehammered, much to the dismay of her companions. Short Bio: Rayel was once known as Krigr, a bloodthirsty mercenary and petty thief. She was thrown in prison for many years, converting to the faith of the Merciful God. The woman took her oaths after being released, and spent many years traveling the lands, seeking penance. Rayel was knighted after her courageous stand at the Massacre of West Lurander, when a mad dragon attacked an unprotected village (the dragon was very weak, I am not godmodding, my character is in no way an expert dragon killer). Rayel distracted the dragon, giving the villagers time to escape, almost at the cost of her life. She was greviously injured, receiving burns she will probably bear until the end of her life.
As if I have anything better to do. Besides, every time I participate it kinda dies. I'd like to see this one all the way through. Do rps ever conclude, or do they all die slow painful deaths?
Urson shook his head. "And you want the three of us just to waltz around the world to these 'sites of power' as you call them, find out what the madman did there and come back, all while having dragons raging around us and any other threats at the same time?"
"That's about it," the portly wizard said. His head was bald and a pair of small spectacles rested on the end of his nose. His name was Gathryn and he was the thorn in Urson's side at the moment. "You can take along more people if you want."
Urson laughed, his big ugly head tilting back. Loraya, arms crossed and leaning against the wall next to the door cracked a grin too. Octavia just shook her head.
"I'm sure you can do it, even if you don't hire anyone else." The wizard was determined to get the three of them to do what the group of wizards wanted. The only other person in the room was a female mage of almost identical features to Octavia. Admitedly that was because they were sisters. Hence why the dragon hunting party was here.
"Sister, can't you make him see reason?" she asked Octavia.
"No Lythyn. He won't." She smiled faintly at Urson.
-Stay out of this priestess.- ~-Not likely Urson. The fate of the world rests in our hands, and anyone else we can get to come with us.-~ --Stop squabling children. Urson, conceed.-- -Fine.-
Urson sighed under hs breath. "Fine, we'll do your bloody work. Just make sure our items are done by the evening."
With that, the trio left the mages tower in the middle of a well-established town. They were all glad that the tavern was right across the square when they walked into it and sat down. The waitress immediately brought them plates of food each. They were known in these parts.
Rayel rode into town, peering out at the village through the slant in her visor. A few wandering peasants gaped at her obviously; it was rare to see knights these days, they had a nasty tendency to get themselves killed, and there were to volunteers to replace them. In these dark times no one wanted to be the protector of the people, and few believed in a kind or just god anymore.
The paladin shifted uncomfortably, urging her horse to the nearest town. Cheiron whickered comfortingly, sensing her unease. Patting the horse on the nose, Rayel swung off her steed and led him into the stable.
The knight entered the inn tentatively, her unseen eyes sweeping over the strange collection of tavern dwellers. She slid into the nearest seat at an empty table, trying very hard to look strong and heroic. Her efforts were wasted when a tavern boy asked her for what she wanted to drink.
Rayel swallowed nervously, and said in the most impressive voice she could muster, "A root beer."
The few men who could hear her reply sniggered. No one would take a person who wouldn't drink seriously. Rayel's ears burned, which was thankfully hidden by her thick helmet. Part of her longed to order the strongest drink they had and prove to those men that she could hold her liquor. She knew she could drink any of these men under the table; Krigr had been known as a heavy drinker.
Rayel shook her head, as if hoping to shake her old identity from her. Her deeds would speak for themselves; she didn't need to impress a bunch of tavern scum. However, she shifted, allowing the men a better view of her sword.
((I'll agree with you on that one.))
Urson was the first to notice the newcomers weapons and he smiled slightly. If he could get to talk to this knight, he was sure he would like her. Someone who carried around big weapons must know how to use them.
--Having fun staring at her Urson?-- -Yes Lor. I like the look of her sword.- --Oh? Is that all?--
Loraya relaxed in her chair, her mug of ale hiding her grin. Even Octavia had to bury her face in her arms to keep from smiling.
Oblivious to any ogling, Rayel leaned back in her chair (a difficult task in a full suit of armor), using the cover of her helmet to examine the room freely. For the most part the tavern seemed rather typical, filled with the usual assortment of patrons, wastrels, and tired looking adventurers.
The kid finally showed up with her root beer, which the knight accepted gracefully, still studying the inn. Not to far away a small trio seemed very amused at some private joke. Feeling vaguely lonely, she quickly averted her eyes, even though she knew no one could possibly know she was watching. Instead, she swung her eyes upward, studying the intricate pattern of cracks in the ceiling.
-Two gold says she'll fall off the chair or break the chair or table.- --I'll take that bet.--
Urson and Loraya touched fists, sealing their agreement in their usual way. Octavia shook her head, disgusted with her teammates constant betting on random things.
Octavia scanned the room, noticing that the tavern was slightly fuller than usual. It seemed that, with the dragons attacking random people that people thought it was safer in larger numbers. She hoped that sentiment was right.
Screen name: Angelic_Illusionz Character name: Adrian Bliss Race: Half Elf Age: 27 (appearance, I’m no good with elf ages, especially when it’s a half.) Gender: male Class: Sorcerer Weapons: Staff Special abilities: The ability to cast Arcane Spells Appearance: He’s a thin man with pale skin and blond hair. He’s not very tall either, and he’s currently wearing dark green traveling robes, though beneath are the clothing of a scholar. Personality: He has problems taking orders and advice, though he’s quite the nice fellow, but his ego is frail. Short Bio He’s taking the place of his fiancé, Cherie Francaise, a renowned cleric from their region. He couldn’t bare the thought of her getting into harms way, and their school could only let one of them leave in these dangerous times, so he kissed her goodbye and put her to sleep, then departed. Other Equipment: ~Runes have been printed into his staff, each one carved with a blessing from a powerful cleric, the lover he left behind. Thus it holds a powerful divine spell within it. ~A crescent moon pendant adorns his chest. It’s supposed to represent the school of magic he had graduated from, and now is employed at.
Adrian wandered into the building, brushing off his robes while he silently scolded the owner of the wagon he had just hitched a ride on. There had been plenty of room in the front, but no, the old fool insisted that his dog sat beside him and he sat in the back with all those damned sheep. Of course, he hadn’t let his temper get the better of him while he was getting the creatures slobber all over his robes, for he knew the man’s live stock would soon be devoured by the dragons, either to spare the life of his family or simply stolen in the night.
He adjusted the classes upon his face and looked about with a faint smile, at least there were no barn animals anywhere to be seen... Well orcs tend to slobber just as much as all other lower creatures out there. He chuckled to himself as he moved to the bar, knowing he’d feel bad about the mental joke later on, for he wasn’t all that bad of a man, he was simply having a bad day, especially after such a poor departure from the only person that meant anything to him in the world. He ordered a glass of the finest wine in the building, and waited for his alcohol.
