If your teacher tells you to practice something, do it! She'll/he'll know if you havent! I have never actually taken voice lessons, but I know this from oboe lessons...

My mom teaches voice at our house
And my advice is to always practice, like MTO said, and never forget your sheet music, accompaniment tape, or anything you're supposed to bring
Otherwise your teacher may bite your head off
Besides that, don't expect instant improvement
It takes time and effort

Never chew gum. I've been taking voice lessons for about five years now, and at least my teacher will utterly kill you if you chew gum.
Bring a bottle of water. Hydration is good.
Never leave your sheet music/accompianment tapes/whatever at the house. You'll be a heck lot of trouble.

I wish I could take voice lessons...Not enough money or time, though...
Tip from a friend: Practise like hell, but not so much that either you ruin your voice, or so much that your family attacks/hates you.

I've been taking voice lessons for most of my life. One big thing for me has been, always listen to what your teacher gives you to practice. Trust their judgement. Don't not want to sing it because it's from a show you don't like or something-- they know your voice type and what would sound good for your range. Just try it out.
