i've heard a lot of peole come up to me and talk s**t about punk players, thinking that because i am a somewhat skilled jazz guitarist, that i despise punk players. this is not true. some punk players can shredd on equals with yngwie or dime. anyone who spits on punk should listen to it...theres some really great ones out there. so all you punk rockers, keep it up. punk is definately NOT dead.

Well the stereotypical punk guitarist seems to only be comfortable playing power chords. There are exceptions, I'm sure, however shredding and cool solos don't seem to have much place in actual punk music. The message I usually get is that it's more about the feeling and emotion of protest rather than going for amazing musical quality, I would assume this is why most punk bands sound kind of trashy. Again I'm not trying to generalize, and really it's whatever the genre calls for; in this case an amazing clean shredding solo just isn't a priority in punk, some sleazy sounding guitar might be a better (or at least more old-school) choice.

Punk is good music, but the guitarists are really nothing amazing.
I've only been playing for 3 weeks, and playing punk seems to be quite a breaze. Though, it's not like I've played every single punk song out there, it's just my limited but in my opinion worth something experience.

The fact is that "power chords" screw with your ear since they are neither major nor minor. Essentially, they make you a worse guitar player, and your confined to a crappy little cube in the corner. It's a PRISON CELL.

punk guitars dont suck, but due to the music's call for minimalism they generally dont really develop into shred masters and tend to focus more on melody.

Power chords are actually a very good tool to use, in any kind of music. i play jazz man. flippen jazz...and i use power chords every now and then. i personally garentee it...pretty much any kind of music you listen to, theres 5th chords...not even nessicarily on the guitar...you can have 5th chords on anything that has strings really. piano, orchestral instruments...oops sorry, i didnt mean to go on and on about power chords in the wrong thread LOL.

Also funny is how you say he's flaming people when he hasn't FLAMED a single person, he was just stating his opinion, however you did flame him. And criticism is tolerated, it's from criticism that people learn how to improve themselves. So yeah, think before you act baka.
