Hello, I am Katie, the Mellophone/ French Horn Section Leader, and band nerd. I have a problem. Every year, on the first day of band camp, I gag and throw up any water I drink after the start of rehearsal. This happens no matter the precautions.
I have been told to hydrate myself. Check. I have been told to drink in sips and not gulps. Check. I have been told crackers with breakfast help. Check.
But I still gag and urk up any water, making me dizzy, nasty, and unable to continue marching.
This year it is especially bad because I am seciton leader, and section leaders should lead by example...not be the "look-at-that-girl-she-didn't-drink-enough-water-so-hydrate-yourself!" example either.
What am I doing wrong? What can I do to stop the embarrassingness? Do you have any "getting sick" stories to share?
Thanks for the help in advance.

P.S. If this is already a topic, I am very sorry; I did not see it.
Please then provide me directions to that topic so that I might educate myself.

Maybe you're water is too cold. When my Dad was workign as an electricion, they were working outside ona building when it was really hot out. One of these other guys drank some ice water, and his heart stoped. Maybe you've got something similar to that goind on. Or, it could be too warm.

-[[Take a little bit of time everyday to reflect on bits and pieces of life. Relax and view life to its max.]]-
Heat makes people nauseous easily. If you are usually inside and decide to outside for the first time in weeks for marching camp, that could be the case. Also, drink when you're inside, instead, before the start of rehersal when you're outside.

It could be a number of things: -For me, I can't eat somethin' with a lot of sugar, can't drink sports drinks [Gaterade, etc.], and I can't go without eatin'. Maybe any of that could be it. -I've never had a problem with water temperature, but that could be it. -When we were outside for several hours, most of us got those camel packs and just bit and sucked [haha. One of our many band jokes] whenever we needed water. -Umm...Try preventin' any heat exhaustion. Wear a hat, put on sunscreen, stay hydrated, take small sips, etc., etc.
Honestly, I really can't think of anythin' else. Maybe drink water later than when you do. For me, I can't drink or eat anythin' too early or I'll feel sick. Hope any of this can help.

Hmm, I've never heard of that happening. They say though to drink water alllll the time. For all the hours and days before practice. Also, cold water can be bad for you. I dunno, I usually drink like, one gulp, and then I fill my mouth with water and swallow it bit by bit as I run back to whatever I was doing last (we only get like, 30 second water breaks.)

Don't worry- I'm one of teh guard captains and a senior this year. This was my fourth year at band camp and I have never, ever fallen out before. But on the first day, we ran a lap and my low blood pressure issues started to act up. I started to black out and I couldn't feel my arms, so I sat down to drink gatorade which helps raise my blood pressure. After about 5 minutes, a band mom starts walking me inside when I just kneel down, throw up my gatorade and breakfast, and feel a bit better. I was so mad- I had been out there for only an hour and a half!
So don't feel bad, it happens to the best of us. xP
