Watching TV lately I've noticed there's a good deal of -isms being used in commercials to sell stuff.

There's this one ad the other night where this guy is at a check out line buying tofu and veggies and healthy things and the guy next to him has piles of red meat he's getting. Mr. Tofu looks over at the other man's food and sort of whimpers (because his girlfriend/wife/SO is making him buy healthy food). He decides to go to a Hummer dealership and "Reclaim [his] manhood" by buying a vehicle that gets 2 mpg and can cause serious accidents.

In a Burger King commercial they show a similar idea - men are oppressed by women who force them to eat "chick food" (read: veggies, tofu, and other healthy things). They decide to rise up together and sing "I am man hear me roar" about their oppression while the go on an angry march to Burger King to get double Texas burgers (or whatever) and push minivans (which women force them to drive) off of bridges and rip off their ties (which women force them to wear) on the way. One interesting to notice about that is they're all white. Except for one black guy and one stereotypical "nerdy" generic Asian dude who does a Karate chop and shatters a cinderblock.

So apparently you're only a real man if you eat meat and women oppress men by forcing them to eat veggies and healthy stuff.

Well Duh, only real men eat meat! Only men are supposed to hunt. And drink lots of beer and get reckless.
Stereotypes are fun, aren't they?

I have seen both of those commercials. I find some of those images of what a real man is supposed to be kind of silly.

Getting drunk and reckless kicks a**. Activities of such noble pursuits should be open to both sexes, though.

I have coworkers who tell me that real men eat meat. Except, of course, while they're watching me sling forty 80 lbs bags of cement mix.

Well, I suppose they know their target audiences. rolleyes After all, how many people in this guild would buy a Hummer?

I think it sucks for women too. It definitley pushes gender roles/concepts and to some extent breeds misogony. Like these ads being about women "oppressing" men by "forcing" them to eat veggies and tofu - some men are going to watch it and be like "That's true. I hate women. grrrr."
Both commercials show that women are expected to eat vegetables and (in the case of the BK commercial - hardly eat anything). The idea is that women are always trying to watch their weight. If you're female and don't do watch your weight or if you eat meat they're also saying that you're not a "real woman."

One of my friends gets so irritated by those "Eat Like a Man" commercials. She hates BK, but every time she sees the ad, she announces that she's going to go order 10 of the damn things to "spite the stupid ********". I completely agree with her.

I'm not a stereotypical "manly man". I don't believe women should have to be one way, and men another.

I guess vegetarianism is associated with not wanting to kill things, which is seen as being "girly", hence the stereotype.

the more that people realize how bad things like hamburgers and SUVs are, the more advertisers have to work to make them seem necessary. as sad as it sounds, proving their masculinity is very important to some guys, just like there are still girls who try to act as ******** proper as possible. advertisers know that they have no chance with the demographic of men who know better, so they don't try to appeal to them at all.

I think if they're too damned lazy to cook for themselves, they should just deal with what the women "make" them eat. If a man starts living with a woman who's veggie, and he eats meat but she does the cooking, he'll wind up mostly veggie in no time at all.
I've seen it happen.
But if they were that desperate for meat and deathtrap cars and yet don't break up with the girl, they're stupid. So the adverts show stupid men.

Just goes to show, stereotypes suck.
Although they can be fun as long as you don't take them seriously.

Hypothesis: Real men eat real meat.
Corollary: Only fake men eat fake meat.

Hypothesis: Real women never eat real meat.
Corollary: Only fake women eat real meat.

Conclusion: "Real men" have no chance with "real women."

Grain of truth: If such is the case, I want a "fake" man anyway.

I saw that commercial, i found it very offencive, he should have pulled out a can of woopass on the customer behind him in line.

By the way, they changed that comercial to make it less offensive, but its hard to remember how.

Stereotype: Real men s**t and fart like it's going out of style (which, hopefully, it isn't.)

Fact: Vegetarian men s**t and fart like the dickens.

I think we all know the truth here.
