Since I want Lin-Liu/Linka to be a unique concept, I'm considering changing a few major things about her character, mostly about her ethnicity, appearance and history. I needed more room to develop and test out my ideas than was avalable in my old quest thread so I'm creating a new one. I ask that moderators not delete my old thread until I'm done transfering information. Thank you! heart

Intro and Announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS
July 19 - Finally created a new quest thread to flesh out some ideas I've been having about my character. As there are aready several Asian people on the island I'm considering rewriting her history and switching her birthplace to Russia. I'm also strongly considering setting up somewhat of a language barrier as I think she needs more quirks and flaws to be a well rounded character of interest.

July 16 - Participating in the Emelyn White's IODM Palooza!

May 20 - Cashed in 3K from my EW Scholarship for a raffle ticket for the 10k pages Mystery Raffle! (Edit: Congrats to sp1ffy!)

May 15 - Participating in the Scandal in Paradise thread on Jamal's team! This is SO much fun! (Edit: Congrats to Antony's team!)

April 4 - ;3; Eeee, I won a 20k scholarship from the Emelyn White Scholarship Fund in its first contest! I'm very grateful, as this means if there is a FS in the future my fee will be paid. What a wonderful program!

April 3 - Participating in Chibi Hige's character building workshop I recieved the following suggestions:

Considering the typical Asian "desire to achieve" (which can be rather admerable sometimes) I could see her parents being scientists as well. Perhaps they were hired by Feral Labs and that's why they moved to the U.S. She could have felt forced into a scientific career.

Feral Labs might have very likely paid for her schooling, and Moreau might have considered her a very possible position on the island (low level assistant type one of course, like Lily, you just need a BS degree). But her family connections would have thrown that off.

Of course, perhaps the reason she is on the island is because her father (or mother) got too close to finding the truth out. He may have noticed some of the research notes and concluded they were doing human testing. Nothing extensive since it's almost impossible to put all the clues together, but enough to raise a scene. Being important scientists within Feral Labs and frankly, too smart to loose, they could have all of you moved to the Island. Injecting you (and probably them) to be safe with a chip and turning you into a subject. Promising your safety only if your parents continued to work for them and keeping you apart from them.

All things considered, this might explain her dour attitude. Always forced to achieve, forced into a career path that though she might have been good at she might not have wanted. Then to be ripped away from home and trapped here, her parents still working for Feral Labs behind the fence.

It's a lot to take on. Feel free to PM back to discuss this of course.

o__o What a wicked cool idea! I can't wait to follow up on this!

March 27 - Finally, I've worked up the gumption to create my quest thread! ^_^

Lin Liu vs. Linka

User ImageUser Image

Status: Right now, due to a number of reasons, Linka is ahead. Therefore, currently this thread will focus on her more than it will on Lin. (Remember, their personality and basic character/history is the same. They're not radically different other than in looks and heritage.)

Factors working against Lin: The fact that Chinese and Japanese characters are overused all over the internet roleplaying scene, the fact that there are already a couple of very well-developed Asian characters on the island, the fact that I personally feel I know too little about Chinese culture to be able to roleplay Lin true to her character, the fact that she speaks English fluently as well as Chinese, the fact that with this front I worry I would have trouble developing her past her 'mask' of acerbic bitchyness. (She's not supposed to be a truly bitter person, just one with distinct ideas about how things should be.)

At A Glance

Name: Linka Chistyakova
Name Meaning: 'Mannish' (The name is Hungarian in origin, and was bestowed upon her by her mother.)
Nicknames: Link (Generally, she will not tolerate this unless she is very fond of the user.)
Age: 24
Birthday: March 31
Orientation: Antisexual
or so she'd like you to think... 8D
Status: Single
Height: 5'2
Weight: 116 lbs
Bloodtype: B
Nationality: Russian
Birthplace: Saint Petersburg

Distinguishing Attributes: Boyish face, large sloping Hungarian brown eyes, a messy nest of wavy blonde hair, mole under right eye

Positive Traits: Observant, intelligent, educated, good problem solving skills, hidden desire to connect with people

Negative Traits: Can come off as arrogant, prejudiced, potential to be redundant in plans and actions, flustered easily, distractable, unintentionally distances self from people, selectively lazy, her ability to speak only pidgin English can pose problems

Other: Linka avoids romantic relationships of any kind. She has no defense against flattery, and feels very conflicted when given attention as she likes to be complimented but hates to let this on. Thus, she is almost afronted by gallantry, and people learn quickly that she is more likely to abruptly brush off praise than soak in it. She has little regard for anyone's agenda but her own, and changes the subject frequently in conversations she is not interested in. If she's drawn into any kind of discussion regarding sex, she becomes very guarded and withdrawn. Her actual sexuality is impossible to tell at this time due to her studied lack of responsiveness to both sexes, and her ambiguous comments on the subject.

Name: Lin-Liu Zhen
Nicknames: Lin, Lin-Liu
Age: 24
Birthday: April 11th
Orientation: Antisexual
or so she'd like you to think... 8D
Status: Single
Height: 4'11
Weight: 99 lbs
Bloodtype: A
Nationality: Chinese
Birthplace: Beijing

Distinguishing Attributes: Extremely straight jet black hair, dark eyes, mole under right eye

Positive Traits: Observant, intelligent, educated, good problem solving skills, hidden desire to connect with people

Negative Traits: Can come off as arrogant, slightly racist/prejudiced, potential to be redundant in plans and actions, flustered easily, distractable, unintentionally distances self from people

Other: Avoids romantic relationships of any kind. Has no defense against flattery, feels very conflicted as she liked to be complimented but hates to let this on. Is easily tongue-tied or abashed in the face of certain compliments whether they be from males or females. Quickly changes the subject regardless. Practically starts stammering if she's drawn into any kind of discussion regarding sex. Is not unlikely that she's a closeted homosexual, but is impossible to tell at this time due to her studied lack of responsiveness to both sexes.

The ANIMAL

User Image
The most striking thing about the pallas cat, also known as a Manul, is its appearance. About the size of a large domestic cat, the pallas is covered with long course fur, sandy to grey in base colour with the white tips to the guard hairs which gives an overall 'frosted' appearance. The legs are short and stumpy compared to the overall body size - the small broad head has high set eyes, which uncommonly contract to small circles rather than slits as in other small wild cats, and low set hair covered ears. The head is covered by a stripped facial ruff and sports long whiskers and a white chin. The tail of the pallas cat is tipped with black and has darker rings toward the end, similar dark markings can also be faintly seen across the side of its back.

The range of the pallas cat extends from Iran through southern Asia to parts of western China. Its habitat varies from rocky desert through steppes to barren mountainous regions up to about 15,000 feet and the extremes in temperature in all these areas is combated by the palas cats dense fur. During the day the cat uses caves, burrows and rock fissures to sleep and becomes more active toward dusk. The pallas cat is a lone, nocturnal hunter and preys predominately on rodents and small mammals.

Why a Pallas cat? Well, first of all I was looking for an animal that lives in at least parts of China. Russia. (Convenient that the Pallas cat lives in both, eh? It only seems to affirm my choice. biggrin ) It just seemed it would keep that faint idea of Lin's Linka's actual heritage alive. I was interested in a four legged animal, preferably a mammal as, knowing a lot about mammalian physiology (and relatively little about reptilian and avian psysiology!) I feel it would be the best fit for me roleplay-wise. Also, I find the Pallas Cat fascinating. It's not just some applicable creature I stumbled across online. Last summer, part of my family went on a cross country road trip from California to Virginia hitting as many zoos as we could as we drove back home. At one of the zoos I encountered a Pallas Cat. I was absolutely delighted! I'd never seen such an odd little feline. The Pallas Cat lived up to its grumpy appearance and hissed at me, but the sight of his stodgy warning was almost laughable, and despite his desire to come off as unapproachable, something about him was ineffably endearing.

More than other animals I've thought about, the Pallas Cat seems to have that extra kick of a personality all of its own, which my concept will need if she's ever to stand a chance of fitting in with such a unique blend of colorful characters on the Island.
