For years in the realm of fandom, from cosplayers at conventions to the advent of Youtube and several amusing parodies to be found both there and elsewhere online, and certainly now with a full length feature movie based on the games, Castlevania always has been dreadfully tempting to bring onto the screen besides with a controller in hand. After much brainstorming and consultation, I can say that there are talks between some associates and I of bringing a short film based on Castlevania to fruition. At this extremely early stage in pre-pre-pre-etc. production - ridiculously early to be truthful, albeit already solidified with great detail in what, where, and how it will all be carried out - despite a wealth of information, there isn't much to confirm, besides:

#1. It will be a silent film. There will, of course, be a choice selection of music from the games used throughout the film, but all dialogue and narration will be accounted for on title cards, as in classic horror cinema.

#2. It will be about twenty to thirty minutes in length.

#3. There already is only a basic, albeit confident outline of the plot for the film. Several major scenes have been mapped out throughout the bare storyboard, and new ideas are coming by practically by the hour. I will not disclose them, but I will say that Castlevania fans will certainly not be disappointed by any means.

#4. Though it will probably be a bit costly producing, it will be a non profit film, as Castlevania is naturally owned by Konami, and that this is a tribute "by fans for fans", so to speak.

I feel marginally haughty and egoistic posting this thread about this so soon, when it will perhaps be anywhere from half of to three fourths of a year from now before the project will be near finality. However, there is partial redemption on my part as I am announcing this here for a greater cause. Every thought on your part is wanted! Opinions, criticism; most valued will be suggestions and any and all ideas, good or bad. (And trust me, I'm sure that there will be plenty of each. xD) Again, at this earliest of points, it's of the utmost vitality to gather as much feedback and views that could make this much more than just any fan film. I'm anticipating your collective input.

I like the ideas so far. The silent film slide card thing sounds excellent. Something that would not be expected of a new film or movie. That has many advantages, mainly because no dialogue can be ruined and production can go a bit faster since no lines have to be acted or edited.

I look forward to hearing more about and getting a discussion going on.

Good luck with your project! pirate

Sounds good to me too. As Soma said, it may work well as a silent film... But if I'm to make more comments I need more info on this...

Reception has been...good? That's good, indeed; thank you, it is very nice to see positive criticism of the ground foundation of this new and exciting concept. I will try my best to provide enough of a rough sketch for there to be enough for us to work with collectively.

I'm surprised that it being a silent film is appreciated and accepted as well as it has been. There's a certain depth and imagination in silent cinema that would be more permitting to expression, or to bring out much more in a scene than would it include audible dialogue. That is our ambition to capture the spirit of Castlevania, and the mood and feeling of the games, which, too, are more capable than movies of bringing out the world it depicts. (To digress for just a second, that is exactly why I am so disappointed by the lack of a selection of horror games out in the console generations. The amount that of which the player interacts with and is a part of the game outweighs merely sitting and watching a film progress on by a hundredfold. Why have there been so few, and so good attempts at recreating the horror genre? "Survival" horror does not count to me. For those who read this and agree, I would readily direct you to perhaps the only decent carrying out of this in video games in recent years: the excellent Clive Barker's Undying.

Onwards to the more important prospects: The project will not be in black-and-white, though that was an early suggestion quickly dashed. There will, probably, be a bit of a filter to give the video somewhat of a grainy quality, and to marginally alter the colour fittingly. Because it is a silent film, does not exclude an acceptable amount of dialogue and character interaction. In truth, there may end up being a sort of narration in between settings (though, don't hold your breath for "What a horrible night to have a curse", please). The emphasis will not be on action so much as it will be on atmosphere, panorama and imagery, and premise, and perhaps that is the most critical note to make here. Our reasoning for this decision is both aesthetic and practical. Castlevania has had no more than over half a thousand monsters, demons, and a varied assortment of creatures throughout the series' span, and though there will no doubt be an excess of them in the upcoming official full length feature by Paul Anderson, recreating the battle system of the games and going over the top with hordes of enemies and several minutes' time of whipping action will both be borderlining satire and forsaking the ambiance and tone of the film. Ambiguity is the key, not something starring Alucard and Maria's lovechild in revolutionary France in a race to save Marie Antoinette, whose royal blood will revive Dracula. If someone does like this idea and decides to make it happen, please do so; I would love to see it. Do not be discouraged, however. I am by no means ruling out any action at all being featured. There will be naturally a small amount, and what there is, will be worthy of the Castlevania namesake. Expect a familiar frightening face or two, and a thunderous standoff with them!

It's my hope to be as light as I possibly can on too many giveaway details on what actually will be in the project itself, but a very, very simple synopsis absolutely must be given, I suppose, and here it is:

The setting's purpose is to fit seamlessly into the timeline at just about any of the later centuries of the thousand year period in which the games have taken place, revising nothing and uninterfering in any way. The desired effect is the given feeling of being plunged right into the world of Castlevania with your own mind's eye, everything looking, sounding, and being right as your imagination would envision it. The plot, very concisely, is as follows. It will be starring a descendant of the Belmont family bloodline. A first name for him will not be given, for the above reason. Feel free to simply refer to him as "the Belmont", or even name him yourself if you wish it. Lord Dracula will be revived prematurely by cultists afresh - an established and a typical, recurring means of it happening. (I guess that it is alright to give this away: Expect a live action adaption of the resurrection video opening from Chronicles for the event in question.) This time, there is an explanation for how exactly they did so: They followed in the time honoured method of Simon: journeying for the relics and body parts of Dracula, probably by now worn out a bit from all the passing around and usage throughout the years. After Dracula and Castlevania arise, they perhaps a little carelessly seal off and hide them back to where they were, not in the castle, but about the landscape. They assume that this will ensure their safety instead of them being kept in the castle as in past events. An agent of the Church will come to the Belmont with intelligence of all of this that has happened, and provide to him divined sensors of where these relics are. Then, as in Simon's Quest, the Belmont's way will be paved in finding them out and procuring them, before heading to his fate.

Any more than that would be giving away, and unless it's necessary, I would like to hoard my secrets. xD That's all for now!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that a possible title is pretty much 95% ascertained.

Has it been a month and ten, eleven days already? neutral I'm pulling this thread back up out of its freshly dug grave to inform the curious that the project does exist still; regrettably, the cruel machinations of that terrible force we know as "real life" such as it ends our pleasurable, yet finite distractions - portals away into other worlds in books, and of course games that have become novels unto themselves depending on which you choose to play... But I and my co conspirators haven't lost hope or ambition. While time wheedles by, you can look forward to smaller bits of updates or a new idea that's been kicked around here while everything travels slowly, but steadily to a realised dream. I would love to get a discussion going in the meantime, and I figure why not make some kind of announcement. The silent short film does have a decided title, and that title is Canticle of Nemesis. See you soon!

Oh, alright; cool, the project's still on, just on a lengthy hold for probably a while ahead in the future to come — but this doesn't close the book at all by any means on discussion. Please don't be shy, anyone, with suggestions, ideas, or idle conversation!
