"Thebeachthebeachthebeachthebeachthebeach!" Nereida chanted softly, pressing her nose against the glass door of the living room. It was so close she could smell it - but only because every piece of furniture in the room was saturated with the salty smell of coastal air - and just far enough to not be able to get there. But only because her mother had the key. "We're going to the beach!" When three seconds later the door wasn't open, the small green fae plopped down onto the carpet and stared out at the sandy expanse before her. Where was everyone, anyways?

There was a crash from the kitchen. Nereida whipped her head around and watched as Silverah lugged an enourmous cooler out of the kitchen. She set it down long enough to toss Nereida the key and order her to open the door.

"Where's Darsais?" Nereida asked as she fought with the latch.

"She's at the lab again," Silverah grunted, heaving the cooler towards the door. "I invited some people from the project out, though. You wearing sunscreen?"

"I don't need it," pouted Nereida, who simply didn't like the smell of the stuff. She tugged the door open along its rusty track and dashed out before the arguement could continue.

Silverah swore under her breath and began struggling with the cooler. Five minutes later, she'd managed to get it to a satisfactory location in some sort of vicinity to the actual water. She looked up, located Nereida somewhere in the surf, and then inspected the contents of the cooler. The colas didn't look *too* shaken.

Whatever. They'd survive, she decided, rolling out her towel and flopping down to wait for the others to arrive.

"I look stupid."

Amyla willed herself not to respond, practically locking her jaw in her attempts to stay silent. To respond would only further encourage Kayce to complain, and complaints were not what Amyla wanted. Besides, once Kayce figured out how much fun the beach was, she would cease to think about the swimsuit that Amyla had forced her to wear.

Dressed in her own swimsuit, sundress, and flip-flops, Amyla carried a beach bag in one hand and the lighter cooler in the other. She had wanted to carry the heavier cooler, but Kayce had been very insistent that she was strong enough to lug the cooler full of fruit about. Thus, Amyla was stuck with the popsicles, feeling rather guilty that Kayce was lugging about the heavier cooler.

Striding beside her mother, Kayce was in her own dark blue swimsuit, sundress, and flip-flops, not liking her girly appearance in the least. Were it not for her pointed ears and the all-too-intelligent look in her eyes, she could have easily passed for a human child. As it was, she was looking very much like a sullen human child, trotting along with the heavy cooler in one hand and her dark towel clutched in the other. At least if she had to wear the swimsuit and sundress, they were in a color of her choosing. The thought of being forced to wear some awful shade of pink almost made the fae gag.

The sight of the ocean made Kayce perk up in an instant. She fairly danced with impatience until she and Amyla reached the other woman lying in the sand. Then she promptly set down the cooler and her towel, yanked off her dress and sandals, and made a surprisingly quick dash for the ocean, practically throwing herself in the water.

Amyla just shook her head. "At least she isn't complaining," she muttered quietly, setting down her bag. "I'm guessing you're the one who put the notice up on the bulletin board. I'm Amyla, and that... wonderfully well-mannered fae is Kayce. I brought some fruit and popsicles, in case anyone is hungry," she said, tossing her towel down on the sand.

Silverah looks up, first at the cooler and then Amyla. She pauses a moment, trying to remember the name that goes with this face, since she is certain they've met sometime in the past at the project, and then hops up to greet her. "Hi, Amyla! I'm so glad you could come!"

She quickly scans the surf for Nereida's orange-and-navy swimsuit clad body. Again, she sees her and looks back to Amyla. "Thanks for bringing this stuff! I hope more people come - they said they would."

Nereida emerged from a wave and heard splashing behind her. Turning around, she saw a girl about her age rushing out into the water. The girl looked human enough from a distance, but something told Nereida that she wasn't. Maybe this was one of the other Fae her mother had told her about? Nereida waved for the other girl's attention. "Hey!" she called, her voice almost blending in with the sound of the ocean.

Amyla grinned widely. "I'm glad I could come too. It took me nearly an hour to talk Kayce into leaving the house," she said rather ruefully. She eyed the ocean, taking a few moments to pick out Kayce's dark-clad body against the waves. Why did she have to wear blue?! It made her so bloody hard to find.

"Silverah, right?" she said, gazing at the other woman and trying hard to summon the correct name from the depths of her brain. Her memory was getting bad in her old age. Or maybe the kids were ruining it; who knew? "I hope a few more people turn up as well. I haven't gotten to meet many of the other parents, and Kayce needs to meet more fae. She was antisocial before, and now she's... well, a bit of a disaster, socially speaking," Amyla sighed, rolling out her towel and trying to keep a careful eye out for Kayce.

Kayce, never having been in water deeper than a bathtub, was surprised at first by the depth of the water and the strength of the waves. She went under a few times before she understood the concept of buoyancy and managed to coordinate her arms and legs enough to keep her head up. It was more difficult than it looked, but she kind of liked it. The water felt very good.

Upon hearing a faint greeting, she turned a bit to spy another... was it female?... fae waving at her. Moving her arms and legs about, she managed a semi-coordinated sort of doggy-paddle in that direction. Closer inspection proved that it was, indeed, a fae, and she looked female enough. Then again, that boy in ballet class had looked female too... "Do you swim often?" she asked, wrinkling up her nose when she tasted saltwater.

Silverah nodded. "That's my name, don't wear it out," she stated. "I used to take Nereida down to the commons to meet other Fae, but I was away for a while and she was just with Darsais, so she regressed a little. No real friends, I'm sorry to say."

Nereida grinned. "I swim all the time!" she exclaimed enthusiastically. Watching this other fae swim was nearly hilarious. Not quite as funny as watching Darsais attempt to doggy-paddle, but robots were not specifically engineered to swim. In a bit of a show-offish move, she dove into a backflip and leapt out of the water in an arc over the newcomer's head.

"Well, at least she has met others, though," Amyla pointed out, settling herself down on a towel. Her feet hurt; she needed to take more days off. "I have to admit, raising a fae is vastly different from raising other kids. I've got four other kids of varying races, and none of them has been quite like Kayce. What is Nereida like?"

Kayce rested her arms for a moment and let her legs keep her afloat. This wasn't so bad. It was like running in the water, except with her legs out farther to the sides. "All the time? Do you ever do anything else, like running or climbing?" she asked curiously, rolling her eyes a bit at the other fae's showing-off.

"Four others?" Silverah exclaimed before she could stop herself. "I can hardly imagine what that's like - I've just got Nereida and Darsais." She paused, pondering if it was necesary to explain her other charge just now. Deciding that it wasn't, she answered the question. "She's pretty well behaived and quiet, except when she's around water. We went into town a few weeks ago and she swan dove into the fountain. There's been other wildness, but not so much. I do imagine, though, that she's not nearly as easy to handle as a human child."

Nereida swam effortlessly back over and treaded water. "Other stuff?" She asked, and nibbled her lower lip as she tried to remember anything other than swimming. "Darsais made me try ballet one time. But why do that if I have the whole ocean as my back yard?" She let the question hang a moment and slowly realized she didn't know the other fae's name. "I"m Nereida," she declared.

Amyla couldn't help but laugh at her reaction. "Yes, four others. One infant, one toddler, one preteen, one young adult... and Kayce. And none of them are very much like another." Just two? Then again, two alone could be quite a handful; that Amyla knew very well. "She sounds wonderful. Have you taken her in for a medical evaluation?"

As she resumed moving her arms, Kayce raised an eyebrow at the other fae's-- no, her name was Nereida-- revelation. "Don't you ever get bored with just swimming? Don't you want to do other things?" It simply didn't make sense to Kayce as to why anyone would want to do just one thing all of the time. Kayce was perpetually busy with many things: her studies, fighting lessons (which her mother still disliked), her running and climbing, ballet lessons. How could you just swim all of the time? "Oh... I'm Kayce," she added after a moment of silent pondering.

"Not yet," Silverah answered. "We're supposed to go friday. I would have liked to get her in sooner, but when I talked to Shy he didn't have any openings until then. Has Kayce been in?"

"Bored with swimming?" Nereida pondered briefly if such a thing was possible. "No. Swimming's what I do." She held up a webbed hand and wiggled the fins on her ears in testemony. "See?"

Hearing her name, Nereida looks toward the shore. Seeing Iris, she waves and calls (futilely, since her voice sounds quite a lot like the ocean,) "Iris! Over here!"

What drove the half drow out to the beach he would never know. Eiko quite forceably shoved him out the door, jar in tow. As he walked from his car down to the beach, he heard the buzzing get louder and more sounding frightened as he got closer to the water. Not too suprising to the man, being bees avoided water.

He seen a few other people and what looked like fae?! The handsome man shyly approached them, clad in a sky blue shirt and pants, his white labcoat over it and the jar tucked securely in his grasp.

A shadow fell across the sand. Without looking up, Silverah exclaimed, "Do you mind moving? I'm trying to tan!"

Kasu backed up all too quickly and muttered an apology, though the buzzing got louder around the woman, almost as if.. it was.. trying to defend him? Weird..

He tooka seat well out of her way and sipped on a bottle of water, the jar now sitting in his lap and his eyes squinting slightly. Being half drow, the sun did hurt his eyes on occation.

Deciding that perhaps she was a little harsh, Silvy sits up and looks at the man, trying to mentally phrase an apology. However, she's quickly distracted by the jar. "Hey... Did you get that from Shy?"
