News in Australia:

A WWII veteran lodged an offical complaint about a woman flying a Nazi flag in her garden.

The woman claimed that when she bought the flag she had no idea what it represented and was putting it up just for fun. However after finding out what it represented she said something along the lines of...It happened such a long time ago people should get over it.

She is refusing to take down the flag as there is no law against flying it. She has outraged the jewish and non-jewish community as well as this it is ANZAC day soon and there are calls that she take it down before then. She has agreed to do this but does not promise it will not go up again.

It is quite a coincedence that one of her friends also flys a flag with a eagle plus swastika on it as well.

So what do you think about this?

I think she should buy a new flag.

Now that's just ridiculous. I don't care what people say, everyone knows that the swastika is the symbol of the German Nazi regime. She needs to take that thing down. Now that she 'knows' what the flag symbolizes, she should be willing to take it done. Instantly.

Free speech.
I'm allowed to b***h about her flag, she's allowed to fly it.

That said, anyone who flies a flag without knowing its symbolism is a moron, and anyone willing to claim false ignorance is a whore.

Well said. However, I think that at this point she's gone too far. Take down the Nazis! Really, there's inciting anger and there's inciting us to go have a flag burning.

In things such as the U.S. Constitution, amendments such as the first one with freedom of speech can be overruled if it incites anger, violence, or hate. For example, students wore anti-war armbands during the Vietnam War, where it was brought to the Supreme Court, and ruled unconstitutional. As such, I'd tell that idiot to take down that stupid flag and stop pretending you don't know what it means, as even children nowadays can recognize it.

also wonderfully said darkphoenix, you are exactly right EVERYONE knows that.

that is why i was outraged when william or henry (the price of whales son of dianna) you know who i'm talking about)) dressed up like a nazi.

They knew exactly what it ment, and that is not something to joke about.
aspecially in europe where it all happened.

Everyone in my history class was like "ok that was stupid.. but he's still hot"

I was like "dude if he is that stupid, ignorant, and self centered that he doesn't know that or he doesn't take the time to think aobut what OTHER PEOPLE think that he isn't hot, he figgin stupid and ugly."

gah sorry i'm in a stupid history class i hope they are get attacked by history books which randomly fall out of the sky

I agree. She's being a real a**, but as long as she isn't actively hurting anyone, we can't take away her right to hang up that flag. Not that I agree with what she's doing, but unfortunately she does have the right to do it.

I don't know which is sadder. The fact that she put it up, the fact that she didn't know what it meant, or that she thinks that people can just "get over it"

I'm pretty sure that she knew what it meant... Don't we all study the Holocaust in World History? I just did a few weeks ago...
As for the "get over it" thing, there are Jews who don't get that. One of my best friends at school, who is Jewish, was in the same discussion group as me in English class when we were working on Night by Eli Wiesel. I'm sure most of you have read it- the story of his time in Auschwitz and stuff? Great book. Highly depressing. But anyway, our groups question was about the sympbolism in the book, and I couldn't see it. How could anything be symbolic? It's nonfiction! It's all real! And my Jewish friend told me that I have to, "Look at it as if it wasn't real, pretend that it's fiction, seperate yourself from it." That's impossible! I'm an observant Jew. The only family I have is those who came to the US before the Holocaust- everyone else we lost during the Holocaust. And I'm supposed to read about it, discuss it, and pretend it's fiction?! And this coming from a fellow Jew! We'll never 'get over it'. Just won't happen.

The whole "get over it" angle to the Holocaust disturbs me. If we just "forget about it" it'll happen again. That shoudln't be confused with moving on, because I think many of us have moved on. but if we just get over it, forget about it, etc, it'll happen again. Hell, it has happened again! In Cambodia, Eastern Europe, etc.

Apologists, revisionists, and all their ilk need to have a very, very rude awakening.

There is a significant difference between "get over it" and "forget about it." I believe in people doing the former, not the latter. Same as my feelings toward affirmative action, in a way.

"Those to fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it...
Those who do... well, they are just doomed."

Keep an ever watchful eye out...
