Once again, Nara found the next scroll by luck. She and her partner were just riding a taxi about town, running a few errands that they needed to do, when Nara felt it again. There was another scroll nearby.

"Pull over!" Nara directed the taxi driver. The man glanced in his rearview window at the odd pair then, with a shrug, pulled over in the residential section he'd planned on using as a shortcut.

The car had barely come to a stop before Nara was out and quickly walking back down the sidewalk in the direction they'd come from. Which one? Which one? The relic was cursing the general nature of her talent. There was one nearby, but in which house?

Nara sighed, she might as well start knocking on doors again and ask if anyone'd found a scroll lately. She started up the path to the nearest house and knocked on the door.

Alarai groaned and cracked an eye open to glare at her noisy door. Who would be knocking at this time of... she fully opened both eyes to search for a nearby clock... at this time of day? She suppose that people could be knocking at this time of day. Salespeople always knew when the most inopportune time was to come by, and were always annoying. She sighed, then levered herself to her feet. She muttered some choice comments under her breath, personally glad that she decided to sleep in her clothes as she shuffled over to the door, debating if she really wanted to open it. She heaved a suffering sigh, then yanked the door open, hoping to catch whoever it was off-guard. "No, I'm not buying anything." She thought about swinging the door shut then, almost did, but courtesy dictated that she at least add, "Is that all?" leaving the door half-open.

Nara blinked, a bit startled as the door swung open suddenly and a rather grumpy lady answered. Well, at least she had clothing on. The relic blushed slightly as she remembered the last scroll owner they'd visited.

"Uh, no. I'm Nara and this is my partner. We work for the Gaian branch of the Royal Library of Alexandria." The relic handed the woman a card. "Would you happen to have picked up a scroll lately? We're searching for some special scrolls." Nice big smile.

Alarai rumbled something under her breath as she attempted to become more awake, reaching out to take the card as she did. She was only half-listening when she heard the question, and blinked at it. Scroll? Oh, yes. That. "Ah... yes? I have a scroll." She blinked again, then gave a suspicious look, adding, "What do you mean by 'special' exactly?" And what are you going to do with it? She supposed she could give it up if she had no other choice; after all, she paid with only a few promised weeks of pain from that poison ivy plant... assuming she would break out, of course. She glanced at the card in her hand, flipping it over to read the back side as well while she waited for an answer.

Nara perked up. At least she had a scroll, hopefully it would be the scroll. "Well..." She said in response to the question. "The scroll has a child sealed inside of it. They were sealed away long ago and now it is time for them to be released. I'm hunting them down to release the children from these scrolls." The explination was kind of rushed, as Nara wanted to get as much information out as possible (that she was willing to give out, that is) before Alarai closed the door in her face.

Alarai pondered that silently for a moment, reviewing it in her mind before saying, "Hang on," stepping back, and shutting the door in their faces. She was seriously tempted to lock the door and go back to sleep, but she had a feeling that doing that would lead to a great loss, even though what loss wasn't known. She sighed, then walked over to the scroll, leaning down to pick it up. She hefted it in one hand as she straightened, debating and wondering and debating some more before she closed her eyes in surrender for a moment, clenched her hand around the case and quickly strided to the door before she yanked it wide open, nearly shoving the scroll at the woman in her haste to show it. "Is this the kind of scroll you're looking for?" She wasn't normally prone (or so she thought) to doing rash things, but showing the scroll to this strange woman made her feel... the best way to describe it is as if she had been at a stop and was just now starting to move forward. What events was she setting in motion by showing this scroll?

The relic sighed as the door closed. Would the woman be back? Had Nara scared her off? Not that it would really surprise Nara, for she had to admit that her story did sound a bit crazy, even to her. There was no comment, of course, from her partner.

After a few moments, Nara was relieved when the door opened once again, though a bit suddenly, and a scroll appeared. The relic caught her breath. "Yes. Yes, that is one..." She spoke, her voice soft. Her hands started to reach for it before she managed to gain some control.

"Co-could you bring it outside, please?"
PostPosted: Sun Jul 09, 2006 10:41 am

It was outside the door, didn't that count as being outside? Alarai was not thrilled at having to step outside past her door and closing the door behind her, scroll case gripped tightly in one hand, muttered some non-reply as she did so. She placed her other hand on the case as well, and looked at the woman with an expectant look. After all, one didn't just turn aside possible excitement just because they were tired, or had excitement already that day, and this was looking like there would be plenty of excitement soon...

((^^; I'm surpirsed Nara hasn't had her try to open the case yet...))

Ah, good, good. Nara backed up as Alarai brought the scroll on outside. "Okay. Now if you could open the case up... and spread the scroll out over on the grass there..." The relic pointed to part of the yard nearby.

Alarai quickly glanced where Nara pointed, not wanting to deal with any more poison ivy for awhile. Oh good, no poison ivy. Not that there would be on her lawn if she could help it, but you never knew... She continued to mentally ramble to herself as she started to struggle with the case, finally popping the lid off and scrambling to catch the sliding scroll before it hit the ground. She placed the lid back on the case and pocketed it, her eyes arrested by the scroll itself as she unfurled it, pouring first over the large picture, then the smaller pictures - Is this text? - nearby. Not that she understood any of it, but it looked powerful... and pretty... Oh so pretty and witty and graaaannnddd! Her mind could be really annoying at times. She tore her eyes away long enough to see where she was walking and knelt to place the scroll on the ground indicated, sweeping her hands lightly yet reverently over the scroll to smooth it out. Didn't the woman say there was a child within? They could have the child if they really wanted (why else would they want the scroll?), but she would be able to keep the scroll itself afterwards, right? She looked at the scroll regretfully as she waddled back and few steps on her knees before getting back up on her feet, standing there forlorn.

Nara and her partner followed Alarai to the spot that Nara had pointed to. The man moved to form a triangle with the two women, placing the scroll in the center. Nara now could anticipate what was coming and took a deep breath as the green mist arrived again.

The mist swirled about, cloaking the area. The softest of thumps (thus far at least) signaled that it had been a success. Nara gave a slight gasp as she stumbled, the mist fading to show the little girl sitting on the scroll.

Mr. Mysterious was quickly at the relic's side, gently supporting her as Nara regained her balance.

Blink blink. Well, whadda know. There really was a kid in that scroll... Alarai tentatively glided towards the child, instinctively wanting to know that the child was real real. That this wasn't all some dream. After all, pinching hurt. She knelt down next to the child, gently prodding at her with one finger, her eyes wide in awe. She let her hand collapse onto her lap and looked over at Nara. "Ummm... Not to be rude or anything, but... who's doing what with the kid now?" Eyeing the child, who seemed to still be adjusting to her new environment, she added, "And just where is she going to stay?" And where'd that scroll go? It'd be nice if I could frame it or something to use as a reminder later, maybe show the kid. I may even be able to get a name off of it... After all, we just can't call the kid 'kid' or 'hey you,' right?

The child, garbed in a gold and red outfit, blinked as Alarai came over and poked her. The girl seemed older than the others that Nara had unsealed thus far. She poked the woman back, grinning at this new game.

Nara, having gotten her feet back under her, patted her partner's shoulder gently as she turned to answer Alarai's questions. "Well, we have a few rooms at the library that we could clear out for her... unless you'd like to care for her?"

The last part was said in an almost hopeful tone. So far, they hadn't been stuck with any of the children...

"Ah..." was Alarai's only response as she postponed answering that, blinking instead at the child who had poked her back. She offered a small smile in return and gently tapped the child on the nose in response. She looked up at Nara once more and cleared her throat nerveously. Her? Take care of a child? She couldn't even keep plants alive! "I... I..." she stuttered, "But I'm no good at taking care of children..." she admitted shamefully, blushing. Even so, her arms moved to encircle the child, wrapping her in a hug.

Nara shrugged. "Well, we could take her back with us, I suppose..."

The green haired girl giggled as her nose was tapped and she reached up to cover the body part with both hands.
