Hokay. So I'm doing an analyze of the battle system of Suikoden III. (Only S3)

  • What are your opinions on the system?
  • Do you think it was a good battle system? If yes, why?
  • If you don't think it was good, what did you dislike with the system? any suggestions of how to improve the system?
  • Positives and negatives with the system?
  • Do you prefer that the battle systems was like in Suikoden I & II (and kinda like IV)?
  • Does it matter to you that the battles are turnbased and not based on realtime?

Please help me to answer these questions. If you have friends playing the game and know they have opinion on the game, please have them e-mail to me at: survey@uruse.com
If you don't want your opinions to be public, e-mail to me by using that address too. I would really appreciate to hear your opinion 3nodding

I was majorly dissapointed when I started playing Suikoden 3. The battle system was a huge turn-off for me. I liked being able to arrange my characters by their weapon range, and the buddy-system irked me. It didn't give me as much freedom as the previous two games had. I wasn't able to do as much per turn as I had been able to. Also, I found that when I was attacking, sometimes one of my characters wouldn't get the chance to because they'd spend a minute trying to move around my other characters to get to the enemy and eventually would just not bother attacking. It was a real pain.

Not only this, but I didn't like the rune system one bit -- sometimes I'd have characters spending two or three turns just trying to get out one spell, which would be completely ruined if they were hit once by something. Also, with runes like the fire one, I don't like being able to hit my own allies with a spell. I didn't even use the True Fire Rune because of this!

Because I despised the battle system so much, the only real way I can see improving it is by going back to a previous system (preferably Suikoden 2, which had my favorite(because of the option to have more than one rune) wink . I supposed a positive is the fact that you can improve your abilities, attack, defense, etc. by learning more and focusing on what you want to, but the negative aspects of the system far outweigh that one positive. I don't have a problem with turn-based, either.

Hope that helps a bit.

The Battle System of S3 is alot like S 1 & 2, except there is something I believe that was missing was the one on one dueling system.

Both S1 & S2 had a duel system, but I've played all through the game and there hasn't been a single one.

Not to mention the Army battle could have stayed like S2 large scale battle system. S2's battle system was more stratigy basis... though S3's battle system is a challange is didn't feel as free roam as S2

I was a VgD mod, but i haven't been in that forum due to modding tasks, so I removed myself from that forum.

Thank you for voicing your opinion, I've saved your comments 3nodding

I liked the battle system, but I see a lot of people talking about how it could have been better in comparison with I and II. And, sadly, I have yet to play I or II...

It was alright. I didn't like the fact that you had to control the party in pairs. Ahhh, that was so annoying. I did like it how the player could strike more then once. That is if you were a high enough level.

I didn't like the pairing thing. That sucked but it had it's uses. What I really liked about it was the mounting. That was pretty useful. I do perfer the battle system in suikoden 1 and 2, but even though he likes what i've told him of the story, my boyfriend just won't play it because he get bored with the turn based battles. I don't know if i would want that though. I love my suikoden as is! heart

OMG THE BUDDY SYSTEM SUUUUCKED!

Everything else was decent though.

What I didn't like:

-The pairing up. Cool for combo attack, but it can get annoying after a while. Aila, only Queen was dying, not Geddoe. That was a perfectly good Kindness Drops wasted, young lady.
-The infamous True Fire Rune syndrome: "Hey, we'll give the player a super powerful spell, BUT it'll hit everyone in the target range!" "But that could hurt the player more than help." "I know!" Rawr, hurt.
-Chant interrupting:
Sarah: Wahaahaha! You're dying!
Salome: Hmm, maybe I should cast Kindness Rain so we can stand a chance against this crazy b***h. *Chants*
Sarah: Smack!
Salome: Hmm? Oh darn, lost my concentration.
Me/Chris: HATE YOU.

What I liked:

-Mounting. Hugo, for example, is a good standalone character, but on Fubar kills things quite dead.
-By default, attacking the enemy closest to you. I dunno, it added a sense of... realism?

Overall, I think it was a cool system and I liked working with it and I wouldn't pitch a fit if they brought it back, but I prefer I,II,IV, and V's system better.

The only thing about Suiko III's battle system was the buddy system, and the rather long spell animations. But other than that, the system was really good, especially the spell targeting system, and the skill system.

I forgot all about the Skill system. I liked that a lot, but I wish you could've transfered remaining skill point to other members like in V. I mean, Hugo had roughly 5000 extra SP at the end and max stats, but Salome's, for instance, kinda sucked.

V's rendition of the skill system wasn't so good, IMO. The skills took so many point to level up, which wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't awarded five SP at the end of every battle.
