Who makes a good fretless bass that isn't expensive as hell? If you could be so kind to list the company names so I can look at what they got that would be a great help

My friend Miles just got a really nice Peavey Fretless 4 string for about $225. Its pritty nice, and also a marked freatless...but if your looking for a unmarked im sure it comes in that as well. I would give you the model if i knew it off hand...but check it out! It has my seal of aprovle.

How hard is it to play an Unmarked fretless bass? My friend is planning on getting me one for my birthday and I'm not too sure I would be able to play it. Would anyone be able to give me some pointers on how to play one please?

With unmarked basses, you're pretty much going on the sound of your ear, and what the note -should- sound like. You have no idea where the frets would be at all. You're relying on your ear to judge the notes that you are playing, which is hard for some novice bassists.

normally, i hate fretless, unmarked basses. im not even too big a fan of marked fretless' - if you hit a few millimeters off, your boned, and i like playing fast fingered slap stuff. but this here... this is something ive never seen before. 1-12 fretted, 13-24 fretless. i cant believe how beutiful this thing is - way to go dean, you make some beutiful instruments (im personally in love with the rhapsody line).

I agree, that thing is so cool, I want one now... But It'll be hard to resist the temptation of slapping. sweatdrop

Yeah, but the stand up bass is just slightly bit different, is it not? considaring the fact that I'm not quite used to the whole standing bass buisness of the whole thing. And you usually don't ever use the space of the fingerboard close to the bridge, right? (That's what I've most oftens observed.) Correct me if I'm wrong, please. ^^

Fender generally makes nice fretlesses. However I suggest to most people to buy a marked fretless.

I just got a Corvette fretless from Warwick. Oh my god. It is so sweet, everything is just so nice on it. And, if youve played long enough to get some muscle memory down, its pretty intuitive and you rarely miss your notes, unless your playing like beethoven or something on the high 12 frets. pic= Only fretless

Including what everyone else has said here, when you get a fretless, make sure your intonation is perfect, and do this often. As for companies that make good cheaper fretless basses, i'd go with Peavey, Brice, Warwick, Dean and a number of others are out there.
