I was wondering, since so many of the foreigners here seem to have joined because of their interest in Finnish music (myself included), is foreign music popular in Finland?

In the UK we have mainly American bands at the moment, with a few British ones popping up occasionally. We have a few popular Finns here. HIM are very big; The Rasmus never caught on, though I liked them; Nightwish are excellent, but they fired tarja just after they came out over here, so they're not as bbig as they could be; and Lordi made an impact.

Bands like Children Of Bodom, Hammerfall and Norther have some fame, but are mostly underground.

So yeah...what's the situation in Finland? Are there a lot of popular foreign artists? Are most of the songs in English, or just the ones that make it over here?

Many foreign bands are really popular here. I haven't been really paying attention to the pop scene lately, but both US and European (especially British) bands have always been pretty well known here as well.

Only such latin artists, that have made a break through in the States are known here (such as Ricky Martin, Shakira, and Juanes). Also, somehow Italian artists are also quite popular here (Eros Ramazotti, Laura Pausini or the male quartett Il Divo to name a few). And heavy bands from German (like Rammstein).

*goes check some Finnish chart to add a bit of a fact to this post*

I say blur the whole damn frog. But no, they don't blur his wee-wee nob. In my opinion, it'd make the creature even more scary, if a blur hinted that there was something more suspicious down there... gonk

There are none in the UK. But then, we're further from Russia.

I know Verka. o.o

I have no clue if he/she is a man or a woman, and I've only heard one song, but he's russian allright.

I actually know very little about finnish bands singing in english. The most of them all end up in germany, UK, russia... and then those are it. Few bands singing in finnish end up in the same position. surprised

foreign bands... am usually interested in bands which no one know or which everyone knows and hates biggrin Here where I live when I mention Ayumi Hamasaki everybodys like eek "Who is she/he?" I live in real dullsville and yes, some people thought Ayumi is a man before I played a bit of their music to them. (Well my friend said "He must be handsome" when she heard Toni Braxton singing. She was kinda shocked when I told her Toni's a she) I like jamaican music and I've fallen in love with indian and african music, specially nigerian pop 'cause my boyfriend has played it to me so much (he's nigerian) I don't like finnish music very much, though I love Ultra Bra and Scandinavian Music Group. I also have passionate love affair wit finnish dancehall music cause i like the rhythm and well the whole music. Otherwise i don't care about finnish music that much...

I like Finnish bands as well as foreign bands. Most Finnish bands that I'm listening, are also known world wide. Like Nightwish, The Rasmus and umm.. Yeah. Also Poets of the Fall is one of the Finnish bands I like and it has had at least one hit song around the world, thanks for the game called 'Max Payne 2'. Other Finnish bands/artists that I like are: SubUrban Tribe, Scandinavian Music Group, Ultra Bra, Sentenced, Children of Bodom, Lordi, Hanna Pakarinen, Jonna Tervomaa, Maija Vilkkumaa, Kotiteollisuus, etc..

About foreign bands/artist. I like mostly bands/artists that are from UK or US and.. ummm.. around the world. Easier to write a short listing.. Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Simple Plan, Green Day, Yellowcard, Avril Lavigne, Black Eyed Peas, Within Temptation, Ayumi Hamasaki, ... I just could continue writing the names, but I think that those give already somekind of picture of that what kind of music I like.

Verka's good xd
Actually Verka is ukrainian..
He's a man who plays a woman. It's kind of fun - the way s/he talks (half Russian, half Ukrainian), the songs... 3nodding And the costumes are gorgeous too!
But I'm afraid to understand this you need to speak Russian...

Well... That's not so big of a problem, since after all I have studied Russian for 5 years. I still only know how to read the alphabets, but I don't really understand the words.

...So on a second thought, yes, it IS a problem. sweatdrop
