Matsumoto Hideto: May 2, 2004

Today is a day that holds little importance to most of the worlds population. It is Sunday, May 2, 2004. It is not a holiday or the birthday of some president. It isn’t a day remembering freedom or civil rights. It is simply the anniversary of the day that one man died. Most people don’t even know this man. If I told them his name or showed them a picture, the would most likely ask “Who?” or “Is that a girl?” They don’t know what a profound impact this man has had my life and the life of many others.
His name was Matsumoto Hideto. Six years ago today, he died at 8:52 AM. He was from Japan, but he wasn’t the emperor or the prime minister.... he was a guitarist. But not just any guitarist. He was THE guitarist. He was a legend no matter how you look at it, and he always will be.
hide (pronounced he-day), as he was known to everyone, was born on December 13, 1964 in Kanagawa, Japan. From a young age, he loved the guitar. So much so, he would drag his precious Gibson around school, earning the nickname ‘Gibson’ among his classmates. At first he only played others music, mostly Kiss, one of his favorite bands. But little by little, he began to write his. He created a band called Saber Tiger when he was in high school. hide wrote the music and was lead guitarist. The band released a few recordings and disbanded not too long after.
Despite his obvious skill at the guitar, the failure of Saber Tiger turned hide away from music. He decided to go to beauty school (yes... hide was going to be a hairstylist....) He had finished school and was trying to get his certification, when he got a call from a friend. The call was from Hayashi Yoshiki. He was asking hide to become a part of the band he and his friend Toshi were starting. It’s name? X, later to be X Japan. hide decided to say yes and joined Yoshiki, Toshi, Taiji(later replaced by Heath) and Pata to form Japan’s most legendary band.
Their popularity soared quickly and lasted through the 80’s and 90’s. They were the first band ever to sell out the Tokyo Dome. (Think selling out... oh I don’t know... Yankee Stadium..... not a seat left in the house and you’ll get the idea.) They were band mates as well as close friends. Yoshiki, who played drums and piano, did most of the composing, but hide did whatever he didn’t. X Japan released some of the most memorable songs in Japan, such as ‘Forever Love’ and ‘Tears’ (both ballads). ‘Endless Rain’, ‘Art of Life’ (which ran for almost 30 minutes), ‘Dahlia’, and ‘Kurenai’. Many of their songs incorporated loud drum and guitar lines, as well as the piano and violin.
hide played the guitar for most of his musical career. he was often seen performing solo or singing the intros to songs he had written. In his solo works, his personality was opened fully. He was a man dissatisfied with the world around him without being angsty. He was cynical, sarcastic and brutally honest, but always to the point. He had a philosophy that seemed to say ‘******** everything, including the censors’** He could care less if his lyrics about sex and abuse offended people, they were his lyrics and that was that.
One thing obvious about hide, if you read his lyrics or see one of his videos, is that he is like a physical embodiment of SEX. He can often be found on stage groping his band mates or dancing with scantily clad women. Hhe basic philosophy when dealing with hide is to expect the unexpected, he’s hide and he can do damn well what he wants to.**
But despite his crazy antics, hide was a superb musician. Superb can’t even begin to describe him. The songs he wrote were all over the board when it came to style, from techno-ish to rock to ballads. Songs like ‘Hurry go Round’ and ‘Hi-Ho’ all sound happy and cheerful, but read the lyrics and they say things like ‘Isn't it full of futility? Your world is great. Supposing it's good, The only person I'd lead to it is a worthless one.’ or ‘The ivy will intertwine, The body will rot away, The piece of the memory will return to the soil, And a flower will grow out of there again, Like a merry-go-round & round, I'll see you in the spring again.’
One day, in early May of 1998, the islands of japan were hit with one of largest tragedies they had faced in quite some time. This bouncy, pink-haired sarcastic guitarist was dead. Little by little the information came out. The cause of death was suicide. On May 2, hide had spent the early morning drinking with his buddies. The day before he had finished ‘Pink Spider’ in the studios. He came home around six, where his roommate sent him off to sleep. Around 7:30 she came back to check on him. She found him unconscious in his bathroom, a towel ripped in half and tied around his neck and the doorknob. He was rushed to the hospital, but it was useless. Upon his arrival, at 8:52 AM May 2, 1998, Matsumoto Hideto was declared dead of asphyxiation.
To this day, many are still contemplating and speculating on his death. The police declared it suicide, but fans often cry out that it was a horrible accident. Rumors have circulated on the web that he was practicing something for his next concert and made a fatal mistake by being drunk. There was never any indication that he was dissatisfied with his life. He was popular, famous, he had a great career... there was no reason for him to kill himself. Yet the fact remains that he did.
Over 25,000 fans attended his funeral, many youths skipping school to do so. Some fainted because of the heat. By the end of the week, at least three of his fans had attempted suicide and at least one had succeeded. The New York Times ran an obituary for him on May, 18, 1998:
DIED. HIDETO MATSUMOTO, 33, idolized, ultra-punk former lead guitarist of the defunct group X Japan, after hanging himself; in Tokyo. Following a decade of éclat with the rockers, who broke up in December, "hide" pursed a solo career to the rapture of fans,25,000 of whom thronged to his funeral. The grieving swarm formed a line more than 2 km long to lay flowers. Though former band members pleaded with fans not to copy the suicide, by week's end at least three had decided they could not live without him.
hide’s death occurred less than a year after the disbanding of X Japan in December of 1997. Up until his death, hide and Yoshiki had been planning a possible reformation of X Japan, but now it is impossible. Even if they got together again, the band would never be the same. No one could ever replace hide. After hide’s death, Yoshiki disappeared to L.A. for over a year. Many bands made tributes to the guitarist. Many died their hair pink in his memory, or dedicated songs to him. At hide’s funeral, Yoshiki and Toshi reunited to perform ‘Forever Love’, which brought tears to the eyes of all who heard it. In 2000(?), a museum dedicated to hide was opened in his hometown. Inside, one can find tons of memorabilia from his days on stage, from outfits to stage props to guitars.
hide was not just a guitarist from some unknown band in a country few people care about. He was wacky, perverted, fun-loving, kind, honest(however painfully), a chain smoking, party going, sexy, hot as hell, perverted, bad a** with an attitude.** (Did I mention he was perverted?) He is the master of challenging the accepted and forcing everything past it’s limit. He is the Ever Free, the psycho in psychommunity. He is the Pink Spider.
hide was special to me, even though I never knew him in his life. His music touches me in ways I can’t explain. He is an indescribable man, and no matter how much I try I cannot do him justice. He was... no is a musical genius. For even though his body has passed on, his spirit forever lives within his music. Anyone who thinks they could forget this man, or ignore him, please, tell me so. I sit here and swear that at the least, you will laugh your a** off at his antics on stage, or stop and wonder at how such a happy sounding. song can carry such a hidden meaning within it’s words. There is no way to forget this man... no way deny his talent or his charisma.
To you, hide, I will always remember your smile, your voice, your message. Life is not to be wasted. It may seem impossible at times, but I believe by your death you proved to others you have to live like every day is your last. And that’s exactly what you did. You cared little about the opinions, and more about the person. You helped those who needed help in the best way for them. Whether donating blood or bone marrow, or getting up in their face, you were always there to help. Always there when you were needed. But not anymore. No matter how much I write, it will not bring back. And so, I know have to go on, living life to my best. For that gift, I thank you eternally.
I can say many things.... I could finish with some splurge of space on hide’s beauty or his talents or his kindness...... but instead I’ll simply say one thing. Though directed at hide in so many ways, it goes for us all. no matter much life floods us, it will get better. Spring will always come back, no matter how harsh the winter. So to all ‘iki oorete mo, matta haru ni aimasho’... ‘even if life floods you, I’ll see you in the spring again.’

Here's last year's speech I wrote for hide ^_^:

We’re brought here upon the death day of someone who etched lyrics into all our hearts; along with priceless vocals and guitar playing. Although we are among small company, I pray that even tiny contributions matter.
The sole reason we cry and take this beautiful day to remember is for one man by the name of Hideto Matsumoto. Born into this world as one of us, he left his mark on the Visual Kei, and his fans.
Many times, I am sure you have heard the tale of hide, in more than one variation. But to revive on the truth, I’ll tell the best fitting explanation of the death and life of Japan’s greatest rocker.
Our Hideto was born on December 13, 1964; a good 40 years ago. In school he was picked on everyday because he was chubby. But his first real interest was in music, and then in High School he joined a band called Saver Tiger. Members left and joined because of the high standards hide set, until he himself left. Yoshiki had called him up, asking if he wanted to play guitar for a band called “X” that he and Toshi were starting. hide would have became a beautician, if he hadn’t joined.
So the story takes a small twist. In X hide gets the credit he always deserved. Over a span of two bassists (Taiji and Heath), X was later renamed X Japan. They were, and hopefully always will, remain the most famous band in Japan.
Only a year or so before X Japan’s break-up in 1997, hide started a solo career on the side. His vocals, guitar playing, lyrics, and production skills could now go to their full potential. He had various bands that accompanied him as a soloist, including Spread Beaver and Zilch.
hide was at the top of the charts, frighteningly, yet not surprisingly, almost as good as X Japan itself. Upon his death, everything seemed to fall apart. Japan was filled with sobbing fans lining the streets and blocking the roads. Some slept outside on towels, clinging to their hide plushs. Yoshiki, the drummer of X Japan, was torn apart as well. The members of X Japan got together one last time at his funeral, to perform Forever Love. All were in tears, whether visible or not.
So on goes the horrible death of this man. He was brought to his apartment by his roommate, since he was drunk. When she got up to check on him, she saw what none of his fans thought they’d ever hear about. hide was sitting against his bathroom door, a towel ripped length-wise, was tied to the door knob, and tied around his neck. Though rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival at 8:52 AM on May 2nd. No one is quite sure whether he was practicing for a fake suicide for an up-coming concert, massaging his neck from his guitar strap, or, if he actually meant to do it. His last song, Pink Spider, is believed to be his suicide note. But there is no secure answer to that. In truth, no one is quite sure.
hide is dead, there is no denying that. But within our hearts, and in his music, he still lives. As long as there are still fans out there that care, his legacy will live on. Some have made it a tradition to give a speech, and vow to spread hide’s music around the world. I myself have influenced my friends, and now they too, care deeply for him. I hope I can continue to spread all the beautiful things he’s done for us.
He wasn’t just a rock star. He was THE rock star. He did far more than just sing for Spread Beaver, and play guitar for X Japan. He donated blood and bone marrow, and even visited a little sick girl in the hospital, after her wish from the Make a Wish Foundation was to meet hide. After hide had visited her in the hospital, she rapidly recovered. He was a happy, crazy, person that dared to be different from the rest of the world. He and X Japan set the standards for other Visual Kei bands to come.
I could never say enough words, no matter how many pages I wrote, how much hide has influenced me personally. Because of him, I have a burning determination to learn to play bass guitar as good as the j-rockers. More than anything, I realized, I want to be a rock star. With hide’s death, I realized that I can’t just sit here dreaming, I have to make it happen. I promised I would make it, and show him that I can do it too. As silly as this sounds, it’s all true.
I also cannot stop crying for him. I know he would want us all to be happy, but it’s hard not to cry. I just wish I could have known him personally. He was such a great person, and he didn’t serve to die. But even though he’s not with us anymore, I’ll never stop appreciating him. No, not even the sands of time could wipe the imprints he’s left on our hearts. His lyrics coarse through our veins and his smile fills our minds. hide’s memory, I hope we can continue to relive. Dream sweet dreams, and always believe in our dreams. That’s what hide would want for all of us.
What we want for him; well, we want him to be happy. We want him to be able to rest in peace. We will continue to spread his legacy, and teach others about this beautiful, talented man. Like Yoshiki echoed through Toshi, “the sands of time will keep your memory, hide.”

I know it kinda sucks. i'll have to rewrite it for this year. >_<

To start of this post... Happy hide memorial day everyone!!

How did KV celebrate? She lit a candle behind a picture of hide in the morning. Then, donned her plushie, hide T-shirt, and went to school! xd Hee, every memorial day I try and get more and more people involved with hide and his music. hide, your music still lives on in my heart, and I will pass it on! *squeels* Keep the spirit alive people and don't be sad, HAPPY hIDE MEMORIAL DAAAAY! whee heart

This might be a long post. Please, bare with me! ^^

hide,

So...It's that time of year again. It's seven years? Is it? Time sometimes goes so fast. Even as I listen to your songs today, it's unbelievable that I'm still so inspired by you and your music. So, it's this day, most of all, that makes me relize how much you've impacted me...And how you're gone. When I get disappointed about something, like song writing, or guitar, I just think of you. I think of the stories I heard of you dragging around your Gibson. And, I remember you totally rocking with your guitar, I think to myself that I can try harder. It's silly, but, you've also inspired me to be a better person. To donate blood, to go out of my way to help others and to be happy. I guess it's cliche, but really, deffinetly not fake...Your my idol...Your my hero. Sometimes people ask me how I can like that 'pink haired girl', and, you know what? I'm left speechless, because...I really don't know where to start. Should I talk about your energy, your guitar playing, song writing? What about the hope you gave to people through your songs...Through yourself? So. You were a rockstar. But, you were a rockstar who touched the lives of everyone who hears your music. I will try my hardest to keep your spirit alive within myself, and within others, to have your music live on and on...Even though your gone and flying...Are you carrying our hearts missiles within your arms? So, for this year and until next year...Those are my few words for you. I guess you were right, hide...It is like a merry-go-round...I'll see you again in the spring.

~Once, I thought I lost you forever
Were you only a passing dream?
A bright pink apparation
Ill see you in the spring again

Ive found you within my heart once more
But Ill still dream dreams of you
Sitting beneath that sakura tree that radiates you
Ill see you in the spring again~

~Goodbye for now~
