Alrighty...well, the story begins like this.
I took the laundry down into my grandmother's basement. There was a horrid stench, but it was an old lady'd house! What could I possibly tell my dear old grandmother--that her house stunk really, really bad?
As I stepped off the stairs, there was a rather unpleasant squelching sound. "Crap." I ran upstairs, and told my mother and grandmother what had happened. The basement had flooded for the first time. Ever.
The next day, my mom and I spent several hours going through soaked boxes. In a closet I'd never opened before, I found several shelves of beautiful old books. There were books in English, Portugese, Spanish, German, French, etc. Textbooks, novels, digests, and more. I had found the motherload, or so I thought.
As my brother brought up several moldy boxes to take to the dump, I saw a book poking out. Being me, I wailed at him to put it down and to give me all the other boxes with books. LOTS of books. They were wet, but I've dried most of them. They were my grandfather's, who had died before I was born. He must have been bery intelligent, and the books were like Bibles. Thin pages, tiny print.
I HAVE FOUND TRUE HEAVEN. All of those new...er...old books to learn from.
Like my story? n.n Any similiar ones?

Wow. I was getting sadder and sadder as I read your post. I'm so glad it had a happy ending (at least concerning the books). Flooding is so scary. But how cool that you found such a treasure! I really hope you enjoy them all. biggrin

That's wonderful. What I like most about this story is I imagine your grandfather would be very happy that you are enjoying all his old books.

My grandpa's house is like a mansion, and there are books everywhere. Most are non-fiction, like of WW2 or biographies, but there are awesome sailing books--about pirates, mutiney[sp], and other stuff.

Bleaugh. I wish I had a grandpa like that. But even if my grandpa were like that, all his books would be in Chinese... and I can't read Chinese. crying
But I want to build a collection like that when I grow up, and then when my grandchildren find it.... 3nodding

The only thing I see similar in my life was a few weeks ago when something in the bathroom decided to spew water all over in the middle of the night and ruined Crime and Punishment, Babit, a collection of Poe stories, and several issues of "Reader's Digest" from the '90s.
D: No happy stories here, though I do get to buy new copies of C&P and Babit.

Hmm...all my grandparents' books would be in English, some would Filipino, and a few might be in Spanish. But they're all in the Philippines! And none of my cousins over there really like reading. crying

Unfortunetly, no. Both sets of my grandparents aren't "thinkers". Haha, and the only flood I've had was at camp, when my tent flooded and soaked EVERYTHING. So now my copy of "Taming of the Shrew" looks loved to death. Which I did, but the flood definetly helped the aging process along.
But, I would probably find alot of designer purses and old avon products if I looked in my grandma's basement...
