Battle Royale: 7/21/06
This bit of news kind of went under the radar. Apparently The NY Times spoke with producer Roy Lee, where he briefly revealed what us skeptical fans of the original can possibly expect from this Americanized version. Firstly he mentions how it will take place in America (no surprise) and it will indeed still deal with high school students, although he doesn't know exactly how that'll work at the moment. An idea that was quickly brushed off was to have the students possibly part of some sort of juvenile detention system. That idea doesn't seem likely, but it is one way to "tone down" the storyline for us apparently squeemish American audiences. Roy assures readers that the film will definitely be rated-R, and that he's a big fan of the original film, so he has no intention to ruin it with a bad remake. Only time will tell, but so far things aren't looking too good for this project. They should just skip on the remake and just try to officially release the original on DVD here in the states. Thanks to "Richard Arnold".

Beneath Still Waters: new movie
Two boys make a pact to do something brave, crazy and dangerous. They will see their town one last time before a man-made lake floods it forever, burying it under the deep lake. Everyone’s been evacuated – just the church, the homes, the abandoned shops remain. Only the eerie buildings still hiding secrets that no one suspects. The two boys walk through the doomed ghost town. But the boys discover that the town isn’t quite deserted. And they are trapped as a massive wall of water crashes down on the town. Time passes, and the whispered secrets of the town have been long forgotten.
But now, fifty years after vanishing, the sunken town comes alive again. A boy vanishes swimming on a moonlit night while his girlfriend looks on. The very shoreline turns hungry, pulling people into the water. And below—below where it is so incredibly cold and dark, the sunken town waits for whoever foolishly dives down to it. Because Beneath Still Waters something ancient now stirs, and a forgotten legend lives again. Half a century ago they thought that they buried the horror forever. The Birds: 7/2/06
IGN, he reveals that they're not remaking Hitchcock's film, but adaptating their own version from the original short story that Hitchcock based his film on. Here's what he had to say:
"That movie stands on its own and it is a wonderful piece of filmmaking. It's a very difficult thing to say, 'We're remaking a Hitchcock film.' What was interesting to us was that the short story [by Daphne Du Maurier] the Hitchcock film was based on was chock full of stuff that Hitchcock didn't use in his film. And so we went to those things and that's the basis of our film. It's the same title because it's based on the same short story but we don't have characters like what they have. The concept of birds, certainly, that's the core of the movie but the situations and the plot come from the short story not from the Hitchcock film." So in other words they're using the same title as a marketing ploy to gain interest from fans of the original. Fuller also briefly goes over the fact that the film will revolve around a family that has been living in the town as opposed to the original that followed a young woman who arrived in the town at the same time of the time attacks.

Eli, I think, wants to do it next. Were dying to do it; its just us getting the script just right. Ive had the option on the [Richard Matheson] short story for many years. We both have so much respect for Mathesons work. There are just so many horror movies that get churned through right now that we dont want it to be in any way like a conventional horror film. We want it to be something special, so its very high, very high, on the priority list."
Boy Eats Girl: news
The Irish horror/comedy that's actually banned in its own country looks to be getting a release in the U.S. sometime this year via Lion's Gate. The Breed: news

Castlevania: 7/2/06
Writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson spoke to IGN about the film, revealing more details on the story and what more fans can expect from the game-to-film adaptation. Here's what he had to say:
"It's going to explain how the Belmont clan and Dracula first come into contact, so in a way, it's going to be a genesis story of the clash between the Belmonts and Dracula. It's going to span the ages as well, which is one of the fun things about the games. There are Castlevania games in the 1500s, there are Castlevania games in the Second World War, there are Castlevania in the future, and we're going to take the same kind of approach. It's going to be a very mythic story spanning hundreds of years, but the key characters are going to be Dracula and Simon Belmont. And the whip is going to be intact, although there'll be lots of other weaponry as well." He also added how he'll keep the goth and romatic look of the game and incorporate it into the movie.

There's a ghoul that murdered fifteen people, forty years before and that's what changed the island from a resort, a mansion island, to a horror island and he's brought into the story now. I thought, there's more fun to be had with this. It's going to be very funny but quite horrifying too. We'll probably start shooting in September, maybe earlier."
