Battle Royale: 7/21/06
This bit of news kind of went under the radar. Apparently The NY Times spoke with producer Roy Lee, where he briefly revealed what us skeptical fans of the original can possibly expect from this Americanized version. Firstly he mentions how it will take place in America (no surprise) and it will indeed still deal with high school students, although he doesn't know exactly how that'll work at the moment. An idea that was quickly brushed off was to have the students possibly part of some sort of juvenile detention system. That idea doesn't seem likely, but it is one way to "tone down" the storyline for us apparently squeemish American audiences. Roy assures readers that the film will definitely be rated-R, and that he's a big fan of the original film, so he has no intention to ruin it with a bad remake. Only time will tell, but so far things aren't looking too good for this project. They should just skip on the remake and just try to officially release the original on DVD here in the states. Thanks to "Richard Arnold".

- Co-written by Karen Walton (Ginger Snaps).
- Produced by Mary Anne Waterhouse and Blake Corbet.

The Birds: 7/2/06
IGN, he reveals that they're not remaking Hitchcock's film, but adaptating their own version from the original short story that Hitchcock based his film on. Here's what he had to say:
"That movie stands on its own and it is a wonderful piece of filmmaking. It's a very difficult thing to say, 'We're remaking a Hitchcock film.' What was interesting to us was that the short story [by Daphne Du Maurier] the Hitchcock film was based on was chock full of stuff that Hitchcock didn't use in his film. And so we went to those things and that's the basis of our film. It's the same title because it's based on the same short story but we don't have characters like what they have. The concept of birds, certainly, that's the core of the movie but the situations and the plot come from the short story not from the Hitchcock film." So in other words they're using the same title as a marketing ploy to gain interest from fans of the original. Fuller also briefly goes over the fact that the film will revolve around a family that has been living in the town as opposed to the original that followed a young woman who arrived in the town at the same time of the time attacks.

Black Autumn: new movie
A promising young student learns that her acceptance to a private academy is tied to a dark incident in the school's secret history.

Black Hole: new movie
- MTV Films and Plan B will oversee the film, with Aja producing with his partner Grégory Levasseur.
- Director Alexandre Aja also worked on High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes remake.
- Based on the horror comic with the same name.

Black Sabbath: new movie
Remake of the original horror film that had a trio of scary tales. No official plot yet.
- Writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh (The Punisher) will contribute to the script development and may direct.
- Gale Anne Hurd's Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Allen's Kismet Entertainment Group are producing.
- This is the remake of the 1963 Mario Bava film.

Being a fan of South Korean cinema this is surprisingly good casting news. Apparently actress Jun Ji-hyun will star in the film, which is scheduled to begin shooting in March '07. The Box: news
Finally an update on this project has surfased over at DC. Writer Richard Kelly revealed the following: "We’re still just trying to get the script right and make it early next year. Eli, I think, wants to do it next. We’re dying to do it; it’s just us getting the script just right. I’ve had the option on the [Richard Matheson] short story for many years. We both have so much respect for Matheson’s work. There are just so many horror movies that get churned through right now that we don’t want it to be in any way like a conventional horror film. We want it to be something special, so it’s very high, very high, on the priority list."

Boy Eats Girl: news
The Irish horror/comedy that's actually banned in its own country looks to be getting a release in the U.S. sometime this year via Lion's Gate. The Breed: news
Fango spoke briefly with executive-producer Wes Craven about the project, saying: "The government did all of these things to the dogs so the concept is very simple, but the end result is very effective. There are a lot of terrific moments with the [canine cast] they got, like, 15 dogs and there are some scenes that are pretty intense."

Castlevania: 7/2/06
Writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson spoke to IGN about the film, revealing more details on the story and what more fans can expect from the game-to-film adaptation. Here's what he had to say:
"It's going to explain how the Belmont clan and Dracula first come into contact, so in a way, it's going to be a genesis story of the clash between the Belmonts and Dracula. It's going to span the ages as well, which is one of the fun things about the games. There are Castlevania games in the 1500s, there are Castlevania games in the Second World War, there are Castlevania in the future, and we're going to take the same kind of approach. It's going to be a very mythic story spanning hundreds of years, but the key characters are going to be Dracula and Simon Belmont. And the whip is going to be intact, although there'll be lots of other weaponry as well." He also added how he'll keep the goth and romatic look of the game and incorporate it into the movie.

There's a ghoul that murdered fifteen people, forty years before and that's what changed the island from a resort, a mansion island, to a horror island and he's brought into the story now. I thought, there's more fun to be had with this. It's going to be very funny but quite horrifying too. We'll probably start shooting in September, maybe earlier."

Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll: 7/2/06
Manson spoke with MTV recently, revealing that filming is set to begin in a couple weeks in France and that he hopes to have Johnny Depp in the project. Here's what he had to say about the style he'll bring for the film as a director: "I’m a big fan of [Roman] Polanski and Ingmar Bergman, [so] I wouldn’t say [Phantasmagoria] will be like a modern horror film. It wouldn’t be like what people are used to seeing today. But I think by being traditional, sometimes like a Hitchcock, it’s almost modern, because people are so used to seeing special effects." He also adds how he doesn't want any CGI in the film, and oddly-enough supposedly hired a magician to handle the special effects.

Pray For Morning: news

- Production assistant Stephanie Tull and director Cartney Wearn had the same unexplained incident, of someone flicking the back of their heads when no one was behind them in the darkness.
- Make up and hairstylist Edie Stanley felt someone touch her ear and run their hand down her neck. When she jumped to see who was clowning around in the dark hall, no one was around her.
- The director's assistant Zach Bolger was called over the headset to take the Director a book. As he was walking down the hall he glanced down at an intersecting hallway and saw a single gurney up against the wall, when a short breeze passed by his right ear and a women's voiced giggled. The windows were closed and everyone was on set.
- Costume designer Stephanie Portnoy was walking down the hall when she turned and looked down an intersecting hallway and saw a woman in a white dress walking at the other end of the hall. The woman looked at Stephanie, turned, and then starting walking back down the hallway she came from. When Stephanie got back to the area where they were filming, she asked a P.A. to go down "to make sure the area was secure," all of the doors were chained shut. This was not the the only sighting of an unexplained figure.
- Actor Dennis Flanagan and the director's assistant Zach Bolger decided to take an adventurous trip to the creepy third floor. They had gone maybe six steps after they reached the top of the stairs, when they saw a dark figure leaning against the wall. The dark figure turned and made his way down the same steps Dennis and Zach had just taken...but there was no one there.

The Watch: news
Things seem to be moving along, as director Victor Salva has given Fango an update as well as a few production art photos. He also spoke enthusiastically about the project, saying: "The Watch has, for me, the best of both worlds in the horror universe, something that takes the audience on an incredible journey through darkness and into the unknown. A journey that escalates quickly into a heartstopping and unforgettable rollercoaster ride full of believable characters and great action and horror setpieces that we have not seen before."
He then added... "The film, set in World War II, follows a group of American soldiers in a snowbound forest, who find themselves battling a supernatural force the Nazis have unleashed to help them win the war,” he says. “I was brought on to work on The Watch when the project was at New Line. John and Daniel’s original screenplay has a remarkable idea behind it. I believe The Watch has the potential to be a horror milestone—not just because of its originality, but for its pure scare power. Decisions are now being made as to where and when production will take place."

Another Halloween sequel in the works? Hopefully it will be better than Resurrection. God, that movie sucked.

While most of these sound so cliched that I doubt I will be enticed much to watch them, there are a few that catch my eye. The femme version of The Lost Boys could be interesting, and I've been waiting the better part of a year for Corpse Bride to be released.
