Chris Dawes

Another day has passed, and Chris reaches her hand out, patting Desdemona's head gently. Eyes pained slightly, a soft smile crosses her face as what can only be described as a pitiful groan from the creature.

"It's alright... I'll be back later..." getting up she heads for the exit, turning a moment as her brow furrows slight in thought. Shaking it off however, she leaves, shutting the door behind her quietly.

Outside it was bright, the noon sun was high up in the sky and Chris lifts a gloved hand to shadow her eyes as she looks up towards the sky. Some of the tropical birds were flying by, and she still finds herself almost dazzled by their beauty.

Everything on this island was so spectacular. Not nearly as bland and dreary as 'Jolly old England'. Or whatnot.

Still, the initial wonder seems to have worn off as she finds herself regularly bolting to a building to get away from the 'dazzling' insects and other creepy crawlies out and about.

Chris loved animals... bugs were an entirely different story however.

Well, enough of that, time to head back to her room. Too many bugs and far to warm in this outfit.

Barnabas himself had not yet visited his equine charge for the day, and had occupied himself this morning making notations and whatnot in his journal. Of course, he had enjoyed the occasional small glass of alcochol during the course of the journal writing. It was only right that he do so- the drink kept him sharp (though really it didn't) and besides. His morning was not truely complete without the luxury.

And with nothing left to do until he thought it was time for him to visit his charge, Barnabas Woolfe had decided to allow himself to enjoy a good pipe. There was nothing like a smoke while watching the afternoon scenery. The insects and animal life that was too small to endure the good Doctor's experiments were intriguing to watch- there was nothing like them in England- and besides, Barnabas liked a good rest in the middle of the day. It was the perfect excuse.

It was during this relaxation that the portly man noticed a figure heading down the way towards the dormitories. Strange.. it wore a dress, as a woman should, but he had been under the assumption that Miss Alva was the only woman on the island. Though, he supposed he could be mistaken. He'd hardly met anyone during his stay. It was remarkable how skilled the people here were at missing each other.

Ever the outgoing, Barnabas decided to get this 'new' person's attention before he accidentally startled them. So, true to Barnabas Style..

"Hello there!" A wide grin plastered itself to his face, around the pipe still held in his teeth.

"Huh?" Chris was quick to spin on her feet, not expecting the suddenly calling out.

Not so far away stood a man she did not recognize. Pipe in his mouth, and a wide grin on his face, Chris couldn't help but put a hand up to her mouth a stifle a short giggle.

"Good afternoon Sir!" she called back, musing the fact that the pipe reminded her of the one her father smoked.

Taking a few quick steps forward, she gave a quick curtsey, bowing her head as she did so. Raising it once more, she continued to smile.

Opening her mouth to speak, she closed it once more as she felt a rustling near her feet. Excusing herself for being rude, she turned and looked down towards the ground.

Settled at the hem of her dress, complete with tiny claws set in the fabric, was a small, somewhat fluffy cat. Picking it up Chris quietly scolded the little creature for causing a fuss.

"I'm sorry," she turned her attention back to the man, "A lovely day today, is it not?"

(( I'm so very, veryvery sorry. xD;;; *has been.. blah for a week.* ))

Ignoring the fact that he had, indeed, startled the woman, Barnabas gave a short bow of his own in response to her curtsey.

"Good afternoon! It is a fine day, a find day indeed. I trust you've been enjoying yourself, Miss...?" As good as any a time to learn the young lady's name, so why not?

Barnabas chuckled lightly to himself when the small cat made it's own appearance, reminding him of the little pets that women sometimes kept back home.

"Quite the companion you have there, Miss."

((That's alright xD It happens ^^))

"Chris. Chris Dawes." her grin broadened as Barnabas spoke. What a pleasant gentleman he seemed to be!

"And yes, I have been, quite so actually!" she almost chirped out, the man's cheerfulness was infectious it seemed.

Scritching the top of the cat's head, the creature turned it's face towards the Chris' fingers, idley rubbing the side of his face against them. A rumbling purr began to roll out of it's throat, much louder then one would imagine such a tiny creature being capable of.

"Yes, that he is. His name is Sir Walter Barrington." she paused briefly, pulling her fingers away from the side of the cat's face and wiggling her fingers above his head. The cat reached his chubby paws up and batted feverdly at them.

"But I just call him Wally." her wide grin softened to a quiet smile. Wally, however, bored with batting at the fingers staying ever so slightly out of reach, began to crawl his way from her arms and onto her shoulder.

"Tsk, Wally! You're not a parrot now, are you?" she chided the cat, although Wally seemed to simply ignore the fact.

"Oh!" her head suddenly popped back to attention, "I'm ever so rude, I'm sorry. But, I don't believe I caught your name, sir." where were her manners today?

What a charming young woman! She had some of the most polite speech patterns that Barnabas had heard on the island. Even if he had only met one... two.... Three people at the most until now. Miss Chris Dawes made a proud number four- a number Barnabas only hoped to increase, as the charges on the island became more and more human.

"Barnabas Woolfe, at your service Miss Dawes!" He have a little bow, flourishing his hand for a moment before straightening again.

"A pleasure to make your aquaintance. And yours too, Sir Walter Barrington!" With another friendly grin, pronouncing the cat's name as if it were an official of great importance, the aging surgeon wiggled his own calloused fingers at the adventerous cat. "Quite the climber, aren't you?"

Looking back up at Chris, Barnabas took the pipe out from between his teeth with the nonwiggling hand, the ever present smile still in place. "Am I to assume you also have a charge on this little island, Miss?"

"I'm sure the pleasure is but mine, Sir Woolfe." Chris was still quite struck with how friend a man Barnabas was. It seemed so very out of place on an island such as this. Yes, the people she had met thus far had not been rude to her. She quite adored Alva, such a wonderful woman. And Dr. Moreau was rather cordial in his own right. Barnabas, however, was bright and cheery, with no real cause for it at all it seemed.

Perhaps, she mused, he simply took each day with a welcoming to still be alive. Something she figured many could learn from.

"Ah, Wally certainly is a climber indeed. Trees, fences, and my curtains." she poked the top of the cat's head, resulting in Wally shaking his head trying to rid the feeling.

As Barnabas' fingers wiggled in his direction, however, Wally's attention snapped directly to them, eyes glazing over with intent. Just as the man looked up, a paw came hurtling towards those fingers.

And he missed.

"Wally!" Chris shook her head, "Silly cat."

"Hmm, yes. Actually I do." Chris' voice quieted down as she spoke. "A jaguar. Female. She is a rather friendly sort however, rest assured. I'd be more worried about Wally getting after a person than she." she thought a moment.

"And yourself?"

Bright and cheerful, he was, and naturally, too! He simply saw no point in being merely serious or longfaced for no good reason, and liked the responses he got from people when he behaved brightly towards them. To that end, Barnabas endeavored to always be friendly.

Perhaps it was also the joy at being alive that drove him so, but it is not confirmed that this was the case.

"Ah, a proper terror is he?" The portly gentleman chuckled good naturedly. He did not notice Wally taking a swipe at his fingers, instead reaching forward in an attempt to rub the top of the small cat's head with gentle roughness.

"A jaguar, you say? Fascinating! I've never seen the bigger cats myself. I'm glad that she's a friendly gel." Another, now familiar grin appeared at Chris' question.

"Myself, I'm in charge of a Quagga, male, named Bucephalus for now. Quite the inquisitive fellow, he is. I look forward to when we may speak together, honestly."

"A Quagga?" Chris half questioned to Barnabas, half to her memory to dig up recollection for such a strange name.

"I do not believe I have heard much about this Quagga species. I do apologize. Although, that is quite the name." she smiled and watched as the elder man rubbed Wally's head.

The cat took to it with quiet resound. He could bask in this attention for the rest of his feline life. That, or until he became bored and wished to do something else at the very least.

"Oh yes, a Jaguar. Willemina. I have dealt with other large cats in the past. My father had a taste for the exotic elements. He was quite an accomplished traveller." she mused.

"Perhaps you will be able to see her sometime. I assure you, to see them with your own eyes is far greater a sight then to ever look upon a picture or read a description in a book."

Barnabas nodded cheerfully, happy to take the opportunity to talk about his charge - others have sworn he had been one of those dreadful gossip hens in a past life.

"Yes, my dear! The Quagga are a horse like species, and are sturdy fellows. I had thought them quite extinct, but the Good Doctor has contacts, and he found one of them!"

"A Jaguar, you say? I've only read a little about them, but not enough to be called familiar with the breed." He grinned happily- this visit was becoming very fruitful indeed! "I'd be honored to visit with your Willemina! If you'd like to see my own charge as well, I'll willingly extend the invitation! Just be careful what you let near him- he's a curious beasty, and almost undid my sleeve cuffs more than once." He chuckled at the memory.

"I believe I would very much like to meet your charge then someday. And I shall do my upmost to keep your warning in mind." Chris nodded her head and laughed softly.

"Willemina will likely lay her paws at you and expect pats for an hour or so. She's nothing like her wild counterparts. More like an overgrown kitten. I'm intrigued about what you mentioned of your Quagga though. Extinct? How very sad..." her nose twitched at the thought.

"I'm glad that such is not a complete truth though. It's so sad to hear of creatures no longer being able to roam the earth." her voice was quiet near the end.
