I have a question to ask and why not ask hard core theater people here on Gaia. I'm directing something in my high school called Senior Directed. It's a program my school started 12 years ago where two Seniors in high school are picked to have any skits they want in a show. So basically my job is to pick skits with my partner, cast the show, make up rehearsal time, and put on a two hour show.

Here is my question. Since drama is easy to find..Does anyone have any idea or favorites for comedy? I have some ideas for like movies already and I have some Christopher Durang skits picked out heart heart . Does anyone have any ideas for pretty funny skits from plays? I am reading and searching. Trust me..this is like my biggest dream ever to just sit around and read scripts all day, but my head it about to blow up from reading plays and nothing makes me laugh. My target crowd is going to be parents and teens..so I need a happy middle. Anyone have any ideas? If not what plays do you guys enjoy?

Have you ever heard of the ugliest person skit?

Basically, one person is standing behind a curtain, and another is playing a carnival barker, who is yelling "Step right up! See the ugliest person in the world! Only a dollar!" A third cast member comes up with a dollar, which comes from a specific place. When they see the person behind the curtain, they faint. Ex:

Barker: step right up step right up yada yada
Person #1: Hey, I got this dollar bill from the lowliest tar pits in the Amazon.
Barker: Come on and see.
Person #1: *looks through curtain and faints* burning_eyes

This pattern continues until there are no cast members left. Then, call up someone from the audience, like a teacher or the dean. When the audience member looks through the curtain, the "ugliest person" will faint, and that's the end of the skit.

ugg, the word "Skit" makes me shiver. (In my drama class, the teacher taught us the difference between a skit and a scene.)

If you want any Shakespeare, I highly recommend Much Ado About Nothing. There is a scene in it that the audience can easily understand. I cant remember the scene or the act... . Its where Borachio and his friend call Dogberry an a**. Quite famous scene, actually. Dogberry then proceeds to rant on and on about how he was called an a** and how smart and beautiful he is. Rather hilarious.

If you want something short, get something from Johnathan Rand. I have done two of his one-act plays, "Hard Candy" and "Check, Please" which consist of a pastiche of scenes with the same basic premise (Hard Candy consists of about 9 job interviews and Check, Please of about 12 blind dates). Most are fairly humerous and picking one from each, or a couple to spread throughout the show (in order to string a constant theme through since in Hard Candy the interviewer becomes the interviewee for each new interview and in Check, Please it's always the same guy or same girl on the date.)

I forgot about Johnathan Rand! I read a skit called "Drugs Are Bad." I believe that's what it's called. That skit was funny in the eyes of the adults and teachers that would see the show I'm doing. Thanks. I'll look into the other two skits as well.

I have a favorite series of one-act plays all writen by Louis E. Catron. The ages all go up from High School, College graduate and then retirement, man and woman. I believe them to be the same characters, but it's arguable. They're called "Where Have All the Lightning Bugs Gone" "Touch the Bluebird's Song" and "At a Beetle's Pace". It's really cool, you should check it out.

I LOVE 'Where Have All the Lightning Bugs Gone!'
A school did that at one-act competition last year!
I actually think they won best play.
