My friend told me that she heard that women weren't treated as nicely as men in Japan, and men were like the much more dominant gender... Is this true? I don't think it is, but just curious... sweatdrop

I hear it can be pretty bad. Admittedly, it *is* changing, but its gonna take awhile. You can't overthrow 3,000 years of the same damn thing in less than 100...

Makes me feel a bit uneasy.. do not fret, it is not hate crime bad, it is pretty equal. it is hard to put in word. let me say it i not THAT bad. like we have rights, no hate crime, and women are allowed to do what they want, there is practically know difference. only that some people have old views, so dont listen to much garabage about japan being women hating. but there are some people who dont think women need rights

Whew! Okay... Thanks, that made me feel much better. It's just, I had to ask, because I mean... If I went to Japan one day, I would be really intimidated because I would be in an entirely different country and I wouldn't know the ropes! I think I'm feeling a bit more confident now. 3nodding

Its interesting how the whole gender roll thing works here. Oddly enough, sexual harrasment is not technically a crime here and it is all too common in the work place. I mean, just look at the case of that Toyota exec who was transfered to American and immediately bagged for a sexual offence by his secretary. Ladies are generally expected to retire as soon as the have children (no such thing a maternity leave) or when they pass the age of 32. These ways of thinking are very old fashioned but are all too common in the work place where a lot of old farts think they have all the power in the world.
Also, if a woman is sexually harassed by a senior or boss, she is expected to keep quiet about it in order to not embarasse her senior. There was a big stink about a professor fondeling a grad student and the grad student being hushed up by the administration for fear of "upsetting" the senior professor.
But fear not, there are still progressives and with anyluck the law will get tougher on the perverts out there

It's true. Even when you read manga and watch anime, you'll notice sometimes the women = inferior concept. I was recently watching an episode of the Prince of Tennis and the girls are constantly being harassed for the smallest thing. And once a girl stood up to a boy who was harassing her friend and he tells her not to give her mouth just because she's a girl. I know it isn't that bad because I don't hear about it so much, but it still happens.
It's changing, but slowly. It's gonna take a long time, though. Some of Japan is more likely to be less kind to foreigners than women.
