Distortion and effects can add so much to one's personal sound. Inspired by Death From Above 1979; a local band called "the wild eyes" and others. I've been wanting to get some distortion for my bass. Now I ain't got much cash, but I want to get myself some distortion. I was thinking of forking out like R800 for a basic effects processor, however if it works out way cheaper to build my own stomp box, I think this would be loads of fun. I figure I can perhaps hide my lack of skill with a wall of distortion xp Anyway I was wondering if anyone had some basic shematics or knew of any realitivly simple boxes I could build? Has anyone had some experience with this? And finally what effects do you use, and what do you suggest?

I'm also curious about effects on a bass..
What do certain things do? I see people saying they use a "Bass Overdrive" pedal a lot.. What does that do? Exactly what it says or what?
And distortion on a bass? I know people do it.. but how good is that for the bass amp?
I saw a instruction style video of Flea talking about this pedal he had.. It was sweet, it gave you this underwater, aquatic funk sound on your bass.
So yeah, what do the effects do and such?

I know Death From Above, they're awesome. Im not sure about distortion pedals, my friend has one and it's cool, but I don't know where to find one like that, all the ones i've seen at stores are just like a little box thing. xp

Bass Overdrive pedal simulates Overdrive distortion, overdrive happens when you overdrive the vacuum tubes in your amp, its a distortion that sounds warmer, smoother, and fuzzier than regular distortion. The pedal Flea was using was an Envelope filter, probably with an auto-wah added onto it (most Envelope fliters have an auto-wah on the same pedal) for the watery effect. An Electro-Harmonix Bassballs is a good example of an envelope filter.

Distortion is cool as long as its not overdone. I've listened to a lot of heavy metal bands where there's so much distortion(on everything) you can't hear the bass lines. It might sound good if the only thing distorted in a band was the bass. Summary: Too much distortion=crap music....And coupled with the growly screaming vocals of common modern metal bands, will make it sound more like noise than music...

Personally i dont think that bass effects sound that great. But there are times when some distortion sounds golden. But using effects all of the time just gets old.

I really, really want a fuzz pedal so I can play some stoner rock, 'n' stuff.
Right now I'm using a Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal distortion pedal which works well, but the level knob is broken. crying

I have a "Behringer OD-100" which a overdrive/distortion stomp box and i think it ******** rocks(and only cost 15 english pounds)!! I only really got it so i could play a song called "Hysteria" by a band called "Muse" (which you should check out if u wanna hear decent bass overdrive/distortion) and yeah its really good for the effect which is in this song!!

HailFyre http://www.vmsrecords.com/dissolute/pedals.html That page has a few schematics for Fuzz pedals, a vintage radio type thing, and some others. I'm hoping to build a Fuzz Bob for my Tech class whee If I knew what the hell that said, I'd build myself one straight away. I desire a fuzz pedal more than life itself. *Cutcutcut* emo

As for the understanding issue, huzzah for basic circuitry in tech lessons! @Panda: No problem =]
