((Hahaha, Em references yet another classic scifi novel! For Ballentine and Rik/EmperialTeal.))
---------
Sand, sun, and surf made for the absolute ideal perfect day on the Barton Coast. Sunbathers and swimmers dotted the beaches from the Cliffs to the Port of Gambino, soaking up the rays and showing off their new summerwear. Cute girls in barely-there bikinis splashed in the shallow water, their muscled and bronzed boyfriends demonstrating their strength in the deeper water further out. Every so often, one of the swimmers would be swept away by an undertow and drift out to sea, but there were so many people on Gaia no one ever noticed if a handful went missing in the ocean.
Third skipped along the sandy shore, kicking up sand with his booted feet. He was not dressed for the summer. His heavy black coat with its fur trim looked more suited to the Siberian winter. Anyone else would have died of heat stroke within two minutes, but not Third. He was perfectly comfortable in his heavy coat. In his hand he swung a bright red plastic pail with a blue plastic shovel rattling around in the bottom.
So too was his daemon Constant, but the difference was her coat could not be removed. Her dark fur gleamed in the bright sun as she ran alongside Third. She looked ready for winter, but in reality she wore her summer coat, thinner and cooler than her fur in winter.
Rounding out their little group was Third's guardian Emperial, walking along in a long-sleeved patterned blue Oxford shirt and grey slacks. Her olive green Imperial hat sat snugly on her head, silver disc in the front glinting and gleaming as it caught the sun. Despite the long sleeves and pants she was perfectly contented. Her physiology was such that she never seemed to get hot no matter what she was wearing or how bad the humidity became. Some biological adaptation from her childhood in Miami, Florida. In one hand she carried a bundle of large towels and a beach umbrella, in the other her shoes and socks and a paperback book. As she walked she dug her feet into the soft warm sand, letting it spill over her splayed toes.
The overdressed trio attracted a few stares, which all three summarily ignored as they set up a small camp a ways from the shore where Emperial could sit on the towels under the umbrella and read her book while Third and Constant headed for the wet sand nearer the water. The only thing the scene needed was a pina colada and it would have been a true vacation.
Third and Constant began the slow task of filling their pail with wet sand and carrying it up to where the sand was drier. Constant used her paws to dig holes, leaving piles of turned-up sand for Third to sweep into the bucket. They made a good team and soon had a sizeable pile of sand ready for building. They set about the task of building a sand castle with little regard for the rest of the world.

The trio wasn't the only group on the beach that was over dressed for the occasion. Not more than a few feet from them was another trio, quartet really if one looked close enough. Jason sat there on the large beach blanket he commandeered from his mother as well as the large umbrella that was hovering above their heads shading them from the sun. The blue haired youth was dressed in his usual leather pants that clung to him like a second skin thanks to the heat, a black fish net shirt that really didn't serve a purpose and of course his favorite pair of combat boots. He too didn't seem at all un-phased from the heat, a gentle breeze created every now and then by the flapping of his set of blue wings upon his back.
His child however didn't seem at all pleased. Little green eyes were narrowed up at the guardian, Colby laid on his back while sun tan lotion was being smothered over him from head to toe. .At the moment the child wore nothing but a water proof diaper, though his clothing lay in a pile besides them. Though the boy wanted nothing more than to get away from those offending hands and explore more into this whole new world to him. The sites, the smells, all the new things!
The moment Jason sat back and released his hold on Colby to recap the lotion bottle, that little body was up and crawling away. Colby had mastered the art of crawling and now every chance he had he was high tailing his little bottom away from his father. Too bad sand only slowed him down...
Corpse was of course quick to get up and follow, trailing along a few feet behind Colby. She was the one that kept an eye on the baby, almost like an over protective mother. She didn't seem at all pleased with the feeling of sand between her toes, constantly kicking and shaking her feet as they were lifted off the ground.
Jason soon too rose from his place, giving a small sigh and a shake of his head. Really, were all kids supposed to be this much work? Maybe he should put a leash on the damn brat. As he walked away he could have sworn he heard Rudyard snickering from his spot on the blanket. With the cat and mouse games, most parents would put on their sing song voice and call for their child, saying 'I'm going to get you!' But Jason wasn't that embarrassing in public.
Silently he stalked towards his child, they baby really only making it a few strides away from where he started. "Oooook." Jason said as he scooped the boy up into his arms. "We'll go play in the water," he stated, noting Colby went into a burst of cries once his hands no longer touched the sand. Carefully Jason carried Colby as he walked around the child building a sand castle, sure if he had looked closer he might have realized the child was wearing a coat but his attention was just on Colby at the moment.
Once at the water's edge, Jason leaned down and placed Colby on his feet. Jason of course held onto those little hands to make sure Colby wouldn't fall face first into the wet sand. As the water rushed over his toes Colby let out a burst of giggles, wiggling and kicking his little feet. It was almost like a bath but totally different!
Corpse whoever had stopped a good distance from the water, sitting down and waiting patiently for the pair to return to her. While she waited, beady little eyes took a moment to glance around. She took notice of Third, watching as he and his daemon played in the sand.

Constant noticed Corpse in return. The little wolf was well attuned to the smells of daemons and Forgotten, even unfamiliar ones. There was something musty and bookish about the scents, nothing a human nose would pick up on, but Constant was no human. She barked invitingly to Corpse, simultaneously informing Third of her discovery of another Forgotten and daemon.

Corpse visibly jumped at the bark, raising to her feet and taking a few side steps away. Not only did she not want to crowd their space, she didn't want to become lunch. Fluffing her tail a bit, those boney fingers drummed lightly upon the sand. Her eyes stayed on Constant before drifting over to Third. It was then that she took a moment to look the boy over. He was much larger than her own, though she too noted the familiar scent between the two- though Colby was a lot stinkier.

It was Third's turn to look at Corpse, and his first thought was, A skunk in a hat? He had seen a skunk briefly from afar at Wilbur's house. He knew skunks were something to avoid, and if you scared one, it would spray you with a stinky substance that took forever to get rid of.
But this little "skunk" seemed perfectly at ease on the crowded beach, and by Constant's report, it was a daemon, so Third figured it was probably okay. He and Constant exchanged a quick look before abandoning their shovel and pail and heading over to investigate.
It was one of those rare times when Constant was called upon to communicate with another daemon. She began with a simple greeting, "Hello!"

Corpse couldn't help but shrink down as the two began to approach her. She felt small compared to them, hell she was small! Tensing she waited until they were just feet away from her to speak sternly. "That's close enough." Her voice was like a hiss, the tail curling up close to her body.
She sniffed a bit more at the air, the salty sea breeze of the ocean was almost enough to cause her to sneeze. "You are....?" She asked, watching them cautiously.
Jason however happened to glance over, a small frown appearing on his face. From his point of view it looked as if the child wanted to pick on Corpse. Damn it all. Lifting Colby up into his arms, he made the boy rest upon his hip as he took a few long strides towards the group.
"Hey, leave it alone kid." He stated as he approached Third. Ok now he noticed the boy's attire and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. Why a coat? Of all things to wear to the beach... Shaking his head a bit, he took in a deep breath to sigh. "That's mine, well... His." He said as he gave a nod of his head to Colby.
"Plus it seems you have your own." He commented, noting Constant at Third's side. Ok, so far he had yet to make the connection that Third and Constant were Forgotten and Daemon, but he's only met one other pair and when you see a whale out of water or some other freaky s**t, it kind of points out the obvious.

Third looked at Corpse. He asked Jason, "Will she spray me?" He had the gender right, but not the species. He looked curiously at Colby. So this was another one of his kind, albeit one who was younger.
Constant continued right along chatting with Corpse. "I'm Constant and this is Third. We all come from books!" The revelation seemed to excite her and her tail wagged back and forth in happiness.
It was then that Emperial chanced to look up and see some strange blue-haired man accosting her child. She quickly ditched her book, mentally marking her page, and began marching towards the group at a stiff, deliberate, "I'm not really scared" pace. It completely failed to mask her fear. If anything, it gave her a distinct air of worry and concern.

Jason looked completely confused as the child asked if Corpse would spray him. Spray him with what he wondered and then shuddered at the only thought that came to mind. "No, I don't think she can do that." He said as he stepped towards the Daemon and lifted her up under the belly to raise her up to his shoulder where she enjoyed taking a perch on. "She's not a skunk if that's what you're thinking... More like a weird... Sorta kind of .... Aye Aye."
Corpse had taken in a breath to reply to Constant, but found that breath escaped her as she was lifted by the care taker. Her eyes drifted to Jason as she got comfortable on his shoulder. At least now she couldn't become dinner. "I'm Corpse." She hissed down to him in her usual tone of voice. "The boy is Colby and our master is Jason." She managed to get out after a moment.
Jason gave Corpse a small scratch behind her head and smiled a bit to Third. "So what's your name kid?" He asked as he cocked his head to the side. "You got a pretty little dog there."

The response was automatic by now: "She's not a dog, she's a daemon." It seemed Third could not go a day without saying this to someone. He and Constant had only to walk down the street and one of their new neighbors would wave to him and compliment him on his dog. He learned that the sentiment was rarely detrimental: most people had very fond memories of dogs.
Still, it was obvious to Third that Constant was no mere dog. He thought it would be obvious to everyone else, but maybe you needed a daemon to be able to recognize other daemons. (And maybe it was a bit unfair for the boy who thought Corpse was a skunk to be mentally complaining about how no one knew his dog was a daemon.)
"Is there a problem?" came Emperial's shaky voice as she made her way to Third's side, looking at Jason distrustfully. She could no more recognize another Forgotten and daemon than Jason could.

"She's a dog." Jason said with a bit of a snap, then bit his tongue. Now now, this was a child he was talking to not one of his annoying siblings. "She looks like a dog, so I was mistaken kid." No way was he going to apologize but at least he was big enough to admit he was mistake, poor guy was still a kid at heart too.
Corpse just snickered a bit from Jason's shoulder, staring down at the boy and daemon. Though as Emperial approached, a boney finger started to tap lightly on Jason's neck to get his attention.
Was there a problem? Jason frowned at the woman now standing near them. Oh gods... a woman. He instinctivly took a few steps to the side away from her. "No problem."
Colby just made himself known with a small whine, wiggling once more in Jason's arms. Damn it he wanted to play more not be held! Little hands and little feet started to move around dangerously close to Jason's face.

Third touched a hand to Emperial's arm. "It's fine," he assured her, "they're from the Library." Then he turned back to Jason. "I'm Third, this is Emperial, adn Constant."
Emperial scrunched up her shoulders nervously at her introduction, biting her lip adn looking away momentarily. However unnerved Jason might be by a woman, she was equally unnerved by him.

Jay's attention snapped back to Third as he spoke. "You're a kid from a book too huh? So that means..." He glanced from Third to Emperial, feeling that frown on his lips tighten a bit more. "You went into that freaky house too?" Shifting Colby a bit, as the boy continued to fuss in his arms, Jason glanced between the trio before him. He felt stupid for not realizing Thrid was a forgotten as well, but oh well. "I only met one other .. Uh, guardian I suppose. Eriol. He went to the crazy house just as I did. I never want to go in there again." He laughed lightly, trying to better the uneasy situation he felt himself to be in.
"Anyway... I'm Jason, this little one is Colby, and the Daemon is Corpse. Nice to meet you all." He smiled just a bit, though... Even with his hand free, thanks to Colby sitting on one of his hips, he never extended his hand to Emperial. Rude? No, he just didn't like women...

Unfortunately, Emperial was not so standoffish. She was always slightly uncomfortable with physical contact, but years of dealing with other humans had taught her that extending your hand for a shake was a good way to make a positive impression and showed initiative and friendliness. With that in mind she said, "I've been in the Library and didn't mind it." Then it happened. She took a step forward and stuck out her hand. "Emperial Teal Atreides-Piett." No more ranks, no more titles, those went out with the Fleet in the conference. (except perhaps Empress, but she did not bother to use it.)
The hand hung there in the air like the elephant in the room, large and forceful and demanding of attention.

Jason didn't even bat an eye at the hand, just flashing a simple smile at the woman. "Well then... It is a pleasure to meet you..." Shifting Colby to his other hip, he'd take a step to the side. "I was thinking of getting my little one a ice cream cone, I'd gladly treat you three to one." He said, gesturing to Third and his daemon.

The proferred hand balled into a fist and Emperial narrowed her eyes. "Okay, fine," she said through clenched teeth, already plotting exactly what kind of ice cream cone she would ask for. Three scoops, different flavors, gummy bears and sprinkles and chocolate sauce, the most expensive type of cone, topped with anything else she could think of and like to eat and would jack up the price.
Third also sidestepped, a little worried at Emperial's sudden change in demeanor, as well as the subtle shift in her presence that he could not accurately describe but was concious of nonetheless. Constant noticed it, too, so he was not imagining the difference. He could only describe it as "something else." Something unsettling. "Yes, we'd like that," Third smiled to Jason and Colby, even though he was not particularly hungry and thought ice cream might make him feel sick. The good kind of sick kids get from eating ice cream when they shouldn't, or too much cotton candy at the fair. So long as he avoided rollercoasters it would be fine. Maybe they would even have lime sherbert.
