Well... In simpler music the bassoon and the bass clarinet will often have similar if not the same part. In more complex music they tend to split up. The bassoon in its higher register carries a lighter sound so it sometimes plays with the upper woodwinds (In band we played a piece and the bassoon was all over the place. It played Harmony to the flute and played with low brass and with saxaphones and also with clarinets so its pretty versitile.)
Oboe tends to be more of a solo instrument. In most upper wind ensembles there are only 2 compared to the flutes 3 or 4 and the clarinets 4 to 6. Which is pretty funny because oboes have one of the higher resistances of instruments but is expected to project more than others. But it does have a distinct, distinguished and almost piercing tambar.
So if your looking for more upper woodwind parts often with little solos I'd shoot for oboe. But if you do oboe then go all the way and dedicate fully because if you don't you might be out of luck getting into orchestras and such.
If your looking for a nice ranged instrument with moderate to fairly interesting parts then bassoon is nice. In some pieces they get little solos and such.

stare Resistance = Projection. Because the oboe has such a narrow entry point for air, it resists the flow, but the reed has more than enough energy to vibrate.
That's why it can project so much.

Well, duh. It's an upper woodwind. It stacks on top of the other sounds naturally.
That's the nature of the beast.

As I've said in another thread, Basson they're very pretty sounding AND have an amazingly wild name.

i play bassoon so here's what i think. pros of bassoon: i got say, 10+ solos this year(this may be a con for you, idk) my friends think i'm amazing and they wished they played bassoon the reed will be easier to make sounds from there are awesome scholarships i have played since 2004, and personally, i absolutely love it. cons: there are many tricky fingerings you will have to switch to bass clef the reeds are $14.00 each (where i come from, at least.)
So, think it over, if you have questions, you can pm me 'cause my twin sis plays oboe and i can ask her stuff for you. cool
