It's very raw...you can kinda tell it was a work in progress lol. I just downloaded it yesterday and I'm on my second listening. What struck me was the power of it despite it's unfinished character. Like in "Goodbye Love," the "Mark's in love with his work" speech is actually delivered by Mark himself, which makes it much more powerful to me than when Roger says it in the Broadway version.
So to you guys who have heard this, tell me your impressions of the NYTW version of Rent. What did you like? What didn't you like? I'm interested to hear other people's opinions of this work.

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Music subforum or not. If the moderators deem it to belong in the music subforum please move it...I don't want to be in violation of the rules sweatdrop

I was talking to my friend about that (who hasn't heard NYTW). I do like how they've switched roles in Goodbye Love. It's like Mark's really opening up to Roger, and urging him on more not to be like him, but to face Mimi and his life, not run from it.
I like the more comedic songs, especially those that didn't make it into the real deal. "You'll Get Over It," "Do A Little Business," and "Real Estate" are big ones for me. I love them, they're hilarious. And the song "Right Brain" has really grown on me.
I also love Mark's attitude through out it. A bit more sexual than we know him to be now.

Yeah I have to say, I like NYTW Mark a bit better than OBC Mark. And as much as I like "Do a Little Business," I have to say I really can't see Taye Diggs doing a Devo-inspired song like that is lol. Same with "Real Estate."

Hehe, yeah that's true. I never thought of Taye Diggs doing the part, but I do find it entertaining.

There's already two threads about the NYTW somewhere around here. One in the music, and one in other music I think.. too lazy to look. But yea. Just saying.
Oooh, and the NYTW Benny gives me nightmares. ninja

oh, really? the NYTW Benny sounds like a clown to me.
I really like You'll Get Over It and the beginning of I'll Cover You (the "homigad / what? / maureen! quick dont look!" part). But what really struck me (i believe i've said this before) was Collins' little speech in the Finale "time to be on the way, comrade" to "farewell, Angel"

I wish Jonny had left in "You'll Get Over It" and "Real Estate," and maybe "Do A Little Business"
The words "I'm lonely, bored, and horny" are the epitome of Mark-ness x3
Real Estate is amazing
Do A Little Business is so full of little quips
Just like the song that starts with "Now's our chance! Mr. Finance lived here?" I can't remember the title...

Fleaball Stupid question time: I can tell it's different from the show/movie, but what -IS- NYTW? And where can I find it? sweatdrop NYTW is basically the New York Theatre Workshop. It's basically RENT before it became RENT, while it was still being written. You can tell there's loads of things editted in and out. Go to the thread "The music and where to get it" and read the first post. It should have the URL to download the NYTW.

I kept looking for a thread like that, but I guess I was too tired to find it last night.
