In the broadway version, the phantom throws fireballs at Raoul in the grave yard scene. In the movie they replaced it with a sword fight. I personally think the fireballs is a little more creepy, and keeps the sense of "magic" in it. The movie seemed to drain that. They cut the floating rope, the Christine figure moving, and the fireballs! Which do you prefer?

I do like both, because I believe that the swordfight scene gives Erik a more majestic and graceful air, in a sense, because of his use of a rapier. However, I do agree that the Broadway version was much more inclined to the belief that he was a Phantom.

Well they're both befitting to their respectful media. You can't very well have that grand a swordfight onstage. Well, you could, but it has to be coordinated like a dance and probably would not come out looking real.
Now as for the film, the fireballs would've been a nice touch, but way too CG for the film as it was. After all, they had a bigger set to work with so why have the Phantom throwing fireballs when he could get down there personally and get his a** handed to him?

I'm about to see what magic the fireballs/bravo monsieur scene will bring...
EDIT: Saw it. Definitely better than the swordfight.

The throwing fireballs seems more IC for Erik than whipping out a sword and trying to skewer Raoul. He's supposed to be a magician, not a muskateer.
But yeah, it would have been hard to translate well into film.

I enjoy the fireballs in the play, and I think that it does portray Erik's personality better. I saw him as more the "intelligent" fighter, instead of a hack 'em slash 'em. In RL he wouldn't simply fight (or lose) but rather find a way to use his intellect to give him an advantage--especially an easy mode of action against the fop. He probably would have planned Raoul's being there and I think he would have had a well-polished plan in that case. A rapier on hand is not the kind of master plan I would attribute to Erik.

Fireballs without any doubt. I thought the sword fighting looked a little clumsy. Erik is more of a genius than a fighter.

Ehh, I'd say the fireballs, too. Sounds cooler, and besides, as Mlle Christine above me said, Erik is more of a thinker than a fighter. But that doesn't mean he doesn't kick a**! I just think that he'd be better strangling someone than having a long-winded fight.

fireballs for sure. he is a magcian as well too...i kind of wish also that he had croaked and it wasnt just some weird throat spray. i dont know if you now what im talking about but in the book they mention he is a ventriliquist and hes the one that made the croaking sound but made it look as if Carlotta was the one croaking..

Um, the fireballs. It's so painfully obvious. I mean, if anyone has actually listened to the Phantom saying "c'mon monsieur!" I mean, really. It gives you chills it's so cool. It's obvious that the better Phantom is Michael Crawford, than that other guy...I forget the name, thank God...that's really why I like the fireballs better...do it the original way, I say...

You got to love the fireballs. It just fits with the character. That and it just makes him so much more mysterious.

"Great Balls of Fire!" eheh...I had to say it, sorry. Definentally fireballs. If we had not had that, I never would have heard my favorite quotes, which are from Bravo, monsieur!
