The sigh of the mountains is evident here as the sun sets upon the lonely hills. The children of the small Gion prefecture run beside their mothers, eager to go inside as the chill of evening creeps forward. The town is quiet....until a single paper lantern is lit. Rice paper upon the windows billow out into clouds of beige as more lanterns on more houses are lit, until they are bobbing like fireflies in the distance.
The wind picks up then, the tree branches sighing softly as they brush against one another. All is peaceful as a young woman in a silk kimono appears, aided by a young girl who is supporting her blood red parasol. Mitsuharu Akina, a determined youth, steps onto the stone streets, a look of exhaust and heat upon her face. Akina was a woman of twenty six, quite old for just a maiko. However, as old as she was for her position, Akina was on the brink of becoming one of Gion's future geisha, whom will one day shine above all others. Her mother, an elderly but kind soul from another part of Kyoto, always said she had that confidence about her. Akina, who never turned down a single thing her mother said, was willing to believe it as she slid the wooden doors of the Akita okiya open and hesitantly slowly stepped inside.

When Akina stepped into the dim light of the okiya's paper lanterns, she and the young servant stepped inside. Akina watched with cool, patient eyes as the little girl folded her parasol and placed it in the brass rack with the others. Then, the girl avoided eye contact as she knelt to close the doors, the rich smell of oak and mahogany in the air. The girl had never been this close to Akina before, or any maiko, for that matter. She had never even seen the white vines twisting on Akina's silk kimono, for the stitches were thin and fine. "'That is how a kimono should be,'" the servant had remembered the mistress of the house say. "'Akina will have your ears if she sees you touch her elegant wardrobe.'"
Akina must have saw her gazing longingly at the kimono, for the girl stood bolt upright, looked right into Akina's face, and bowed. Akina smiled, knelt beside the poor girl, and said soothingly, "Do not be afraid. Would you like to touch the silk?" The girl, who was quivering in fear, looked up at Akina's brilliant painted face. Akina held up the hem of her kimono, and the girl reached out slowly and began to feel the silk. It was so delicate under her fingers that she feared it might melt. Akina observed the girl carefully, and smiled.
"I remember when I first touched a kimono. I looked exactly as you are now....only not so shaky." The girl, embarrassed, smiled and withdrew her hand as though she had burned it. "Forgive me," the girl said. She sighed, bowed once more, and scurried off to make tea. Akina watched the girl go, and crossed her arms as she followed the girl into the tatami room....but not before removing her geta sandals and leaving them by the door.
"Yes....I believe that girl would make a fine geisha one day," Akina murmured to herself. "Who knows? She may even be someone's younger sister....if not my own."

By now Akina had grown weary as she sat on her low windowsill, staring down from her window at the streets below. Her chin rested in her hand, and she wondered exactly whom she would meet with the following evening. Ohana fees were minimizing, but Akina had more clients than most other geisha in her district. She made sure that she did not just restrict herself to entertaining only her close friends and patrons, but everyone else as well. This was a trick she had learned from her elder sister some years ago, and she continued to hold it in her long term memory.
Akina inclined her head a little ways, to thank the maid that had brought her a steaming bowl of tea. As the leaves settled to the bottom of the cup, Akina watched them with a misty look in her eyes, as though she was truly wondering how her life would settle after she would leave her maiko years behind, and set out as a full-fledged geisha. As she raised the cup to her lips moments later, she realized that just maybe, a maiko or even a maid could have more purpose than what they thought they already had.
