Introduction

Welcome to the Underdark, abbilen. Oh, pardon. Here I go using my native tongue again instead of Common. Well, we use both here frequently, since it's the language we share with our half-demon equals and our Duergar .... counterparts. For those of you who do not know my native tongue, I forgot to add, that we do have access to a magical translation device, found here. Keep in mind that in the Underdark, it isn't necessary to use the Drow tongue at all. However, do keep in mind that our society is a bit... different.

First off, our ... family groupings are known as Houses. Some individuals are not even related by blood, and could be more easily compared to Estates of your dukes or lords, what-have-you above the surface. The rankings of individuals within a House are as follows:

1. A ruling Matron Mother.
2. The Matron’s first daughter.
3. Any daughters in birth order that are in training to become priestesses, or are priestesses.
4. Any daughters in birth order not in training.
5. Any priestesses not of the same family.
6. The Elderboy, first son of the Matron.
7. The Secondboy, the Matron’s second son. The third son born is sacrificed to Lloth at birth, unless one of the first two sons die before he is born.
8. The Patron, the Matron’s current lover.
9. The House Mage, if none of the sons has taken the position.
10. The Weapons Master or Trainer. Also a position that can be taken by a son.
11. Any warriors and mages.
12. Any slaves or workers.

Currently, to the city I am taking you to, there are naught eleven Houses total. They can be ranked in number as well, though this is not an official way, nor do Drow actually think of their House in a numeric sense. The power of a House is measured not only by the monetary wealth it has amassed, but also by the number of slaves, warriors, and mages as well as the size of the family itself. House ranking can also be improved by an eradication. This kind of task is dangerous, however, as it can make as many 'friends' as it can enemies.

Oh, I forgot to note. The ruling Matron Mother over the highest House is known as the Grand Matron, the head of the ruling Council of Matrons.

Speaking of House annihilation, it happens quite frequently, though in this city, it has become somewhat... stagnant. Let me describe to you, perhaps, that which occurs when a new House is created and how the lust for power is sated...

"A strong female priestess with no hope of gaining status in her own mother’s house will sometimes strike out on her own and form a family.

Thus begins the creation of a new House. She will struggle and gather to herself a patron, warriors, mages and slaves. As her family grows, she will fight to maintain her good graces with Lloth. This includes sacrificing her third son to the Goddess and sending her female children into Lloth’s service. The growth and wealth of her house are a direct reflection of her own standing and power within the society.

The new Matron rules with an iron hand; in her house she is judge, jury, and the executioner. All members in the house are expected to further the house’s position. Those that do not follow her wishes are quickly eliminated. She will do everything in her power to turn that elimination into an action seen favorably by her Goddess.

In time, if she is strong and cruel enough, her house will grow. The mages will set about creating a house of beauty for her. Using spells and mage lights as art, they will visually show the rest of the underdark the power and wealth the house carries. The more powerful the house, the larger and grander the visual looks of the house becomes.

The Nobility lives separately from the rest of the house. Often an area only accessible by those with the ability to levitate, or available by the use of rune spells will be created. This effectively distinguishes and separates the Nobility from the lesser house members.

Coveting the position of the houses above her, the Matron will pray, plan, and scheme to further her house. Covertly she will investigate all opposing houses, looking for weaknesses to exploit. When a weakness is found, she may spend years gathering resources and information, covering every base she can think of before finally making her move. Failure in an attempt to take another house’s position means she herself and everything she has worked for will be eliminated with no trace of their existence left.

The attack will happen swiftly with no warning. The first order of such business would be to drop darkness spells around the area. The rest of the underdark may “know” who is making the attack, but it is never spoken. It is considered barbaric if drow battles drow openly in the city, and with “hard proof” of such an attack, the city council’s forces will destroy the violators. Although everyone may know that an attack is occurring and who the attacker is, it is understood that as long as battle is not visible, it isn't occurring, for there is no visible proof. Eliminating every member of the nobility relates to this--only if there are no surviving nobles is there the removal of hard proof of the attacker's identity.

Quickly, the fighters will overcome the walls, while the Matron and her priestesses launch a “psychic magical attack” upon the Matron and priestesses of the targeted house. All nobility of the assaulted house is exterminated down to the last child hiding in a corner. There are no witnesses of the nobility left alive to point fingers at them. Leaving any behind would result in the annihilation of the attacking house. Lastly, slaves and rothe are rounded up and brought back, thus adding to the wealth and power of the House.

When successful, such an attack will move her House up the ladder one position, thus moving the Matron closer to her Goddess." (http://www.grey-company.org/Maerdyn/resources/houses.html)

Races

Drow: The most widely-known and widely-feared race of the Underdark, Drow are the magically-inclined and sometimes magically-immune ebon-skinned, ivory-haired people of the Underdark, the masters of the caverns below the surface. Drow, as stated before, tend to use magic in their everyday lives, and as such have grown immune to all but the most powerful of spells. They can see in the dark easily, due to the fact that all Drow live underground (save for exiles), but are easily blinded by some of the most tolerable of lights. Drow are inherently evil, it seems, and stop at nothing to get what they want. Drow society is a matriarchy, with the stronger, more well-built females ruling over the smaller, weaker, though more agile males.

Illithids/Mind Flayers: Illithids are tentacle-faced, white- and bulbous-eyed humanoids with massive amounts of psionic powers. They are capable of mentally enslaving almost anything and feed upon the brain itself, a concept that strikes fear even into the Drow themselves. Not much is known about Illithids, and they tend to stay away from societies that are not their own. However, there are some that enter Drow societies as slavers and other professions. (PM ME IF YOU WISH TO PLAY AN ILLITHID)

Beholders/Eye Tyrants: Beholders are levitating creatures built about a central eye, which can cast forth an anti-magic cone. The creature has ten eyes built about the central one upon stalks, and each of these cast a certain magical spell. Beholders vary in color but are typically brown-skinned. They are almost always ill-tempered and very sneaky. (PM ME IF YOU WISH TO PLAY A BEHOLDER)

Aludemons/Cambions: Aludemons are the product of a male mortal (typically Drow) and a female demon. Aludemons are always female and are usually very attractive (they know this, and tend to use it to their advantage), and seem to be of no real discernable race (a little human, a little elven, and a slight bit of Drow) with large, leathery bat wings and sometimes vestigal horns giving away their demonic heritage. Aludemons are typically evil beings, most 'good' Aludemons (Alu for short) being hunted down and killed by their own kind. Whereas the Alu's male counterparts are more physically and martially inclined, Aludemons tend to be more magically inclined, surpassing the magical abilities of even the Drow.

Cambions are the product of a male demon and a female mortal. The mother almost never survives the birthing process, and the father has almost always returned to the plane from whence he came, so it is necessary that Cambions are able to fend for themselves at birth. Typically being raised by themselves in squalor, feeding off of refuse and rats, Cambions are hateful creatures, even by demonic standards. Cambions, who are always male, have dark skin, ranging from midnight blue to deep maroon to inky black. Their hair is stiff and wiry, their mouths are filled with misshapen fangs, their fingers are topped with razor-sharp claws. Usually standing at least six feet tall at maturity, the typical cambion's supernatural hardiness is belied by his gaunt frame.
Limit 3 Cambions/Aludemons total

Duergar/Grey Dwarves: The duergar are similar to their surface cousins, the dwarves, both being generally short, stocky, and durable. Known as Grey Dwarves for their stone-like coloring, duergar possess even greater stamina than surface dwarves, and, while not as intelligent as their cousins, have a far greater ability with magic, though few become actual spell-casters. What dark magics they do possess are very potent and they best love using them against defenseless opponents. Like the dwarves, their nimble fingers and strong limbs make them master craftsmen in metals and stone. Duergar as a rule are impatient, short-tempered, and quick to anger. Duergar keep an uneasy alliance with the drow, neither trusting the other, but both wary of starting a battle for the depths that might unduly weaken their race.

Humans: Humans rarely visit the Underdark, and are hated by all of the races below the surface. However, there is the rare case of human visitors, typically mages or adventurers, who trade with the denizens of the Underdark. These humans are typically equipped with a ring of infravision, allowing them to see in the dark, and make sure to show no hostile intent and tend to be quite polite while on their visit to the Underdark. One false move could mean one hell of a life expectancy shortening.
Limit 2 humans total.

All races are the product of their respective creators; they aren't my ideas, people.

Character Application

Post this in the thread. Once I add it, I'll delete your post.

Gaia Name:
Character Name: (Make sure it matches up with your race.)
Gender: (Once again, check race.)
Age: (Apparent age and actual age, if applicable.)
Race: (From above. If it's different, PM me to make sure it's okay.)
House: (Only necessary for Drow, since only Drow can be members of Houses (though, you may state which House you work for, because some Houses hire mercenaries of other races.)
Status/Posistion/Job: (List all that apply. Remember, gender, race, and age, as well as history, all effect these.)
Weapons/Equipment: (Limited.)
Magic?: (Almost every character should have some magic, but don't go too overboard. If you're an expert swordsman, you don't have time to study, now do you? Explain what kind, and how powerful it is.)
Powers: (Usually stems from your racial choice. Don't go too overboard.)
Personality: (Self-explanatory. Most of these creatures should be evil.)
Appearance: (Once again, check race.)
History: (Doesn't have to be too long, since it's nice to have it revealed through RP.)

Make as many characters as you can manage; this is going to be a fairly large roleplay.
