I'm pondering whatever or not I should make a secondary character. Partly because not allot of people have shown interest in my character and partly because its simply fun to write characters biggrin

The only problem is that the character I had in mind comes from another country, I haven't even been in the parts of the world where he would be living sweatdrop So I was wondering, do you think its possible to play a foreigner realistically? Have any of you got any experience playing foreign characters?

Not useful, but.... I faked it xd

Zach was born in England. But I was chicken and made him move to the US at a young age to avoid being wrong all the time and horribly embarassing myself in front of the European IoDMers with no knowledge of British slang and stuff D:

*nods* Well that's one way of doing it 3nodding I'm going to try to aim for a character that has only been to his homeland. Was thinking of having him come from some third world country maybe Africa or some remote part of mainland Asia. Was thinking that might be easier since those parts are probably not very well known amongst the people on Gaia online sweatdrop It might also be easier to fake incase I need to...

Lots of research~ 83

F lived in Romania 'til he was about 10, then moved to England [helpfully, where I'm from, so that bit's not so hard xD]
But I've still done a ton of research on Romanian history, culture, etc. I've even got an English-Romanian dictionary, so I can actually have him speak in Romanian and have it vaguely make sense. xD

*nods* Well as long as no one who can actually speak romanian reads it I guess you're in the clear 3nodding

I guess one way of bypassing it is be making him a mute or something xd Could be one of the reasons for being on the island? Because I don't think I'll be able to find any good dictionaries for the countries I've been thinking about using sweatdrop It would solve the language problem... but might be a bit boring to play... confused

How many people speak Romanian around here? >> xD

Still, it's more important to get the style of the words right [you know, not just completely making them up].
I don't think anyone who somehow notices that what you're writing doesn't really make sense will complain that 'omg you don't actually speak Somali! >O'

So you might be able to find small online dictionaries that give you a number of basic words that you can butcher into random sentences, just for effect?

And if you're talking about a character who was only born in a foreign county, but now lives in say America, they'd probably speak English as well? Even if it's badly. xD

I've never played a mute character, but I don't think I'd find it much fun.. :B Though I suppose if he 'gets his voice back' through the changes, he wouldn't be mute long? :]

Hey, how about if he had his larynx removed and now has an artificial larynx? 8D That.. wouldn't help the language thing. >> But it'd be interesting. And maybe give him an excuse not to speak a whole lot? Again, the serum could regrow him a working voice box~

Non that I know of speak romanian lol

*nods* I guess... Could try and find some dictionary at least ninja or pick a langauge that has dictionaries available sweatdrop Also if there are two characters that knows the same language I guess they could use English words instead of whatever language they're speaking to each other, just as long they make sure everyone understands they were not speaking English but another language.

I've thought about the idea of having him moved to another country and I guess that's one way of making it work... and it might make it easier for him to dissapear. But I'm not sure if I feel the idea fits what I had in mind...

Was thinking maybe he lost his tongue early in life and never learned to talk? That way when he gets his new tongue he'll have to learn English as his first spoken language since he only knows how his own language is supposed to sound like but not how to make the sounds on his own. And yes he would get his voice back pretty fast smile Or at least if I would roleplay allot with him.

But the Larynx is a good idea as well 3nodding

I know not too many have gotten interested in my characters, but i'll keep going at it till i'm on the island at least, decided to let people choose the fate of my mule which probably will get on first.

i've thougrht of having a character from another country, but really be too difficult, i can make the story of it, but can't get the linguistics of it. be interesting to have a mute person and make them into a parrot, so they can learn to talk by 'parroting' everything but other languages i just can't do

The character i'm working on is Italian. However, i'm not going to focus much on the fact that he's Italian and more on how he's a Swiss Guardsman, and how it affects how he views things. See my thread. I'm advertising so much because i haven't gotten any replies and it's driving me nuts.

Well even if you don't focus on the fact that he's Italian, a person's values and such tends to be colored by his' or her's nationality. Which is why its still good to have a rough idea what your character's culture/homecountry is like...

I don't know enough about other countries to even try to attempt a foreign character. The closest I've come is someone of Mexican descent who was born in America. The character doesn't even speak Spanish.

I think it's possible to play a foreign character, it just takes a lot of research to make it realistic. I'm the sort of nerd that would actually do that...but a lot of people don't think it's worth the time spent.

My quest character is 100% born and bred serbian, though she knows english well enough. she has an intense accent and ties to Serbia, and to learn more bout it i raped wikipedia.

also though, if you can, talk to people from that country. i am lucky enough to have 2 serbian friends, one in the states and one still in serbia. i asked the one in serbia, who like my character lived through the bosnian war. i asked him for information on his life, politics, excuses to flee the country, and death counts, as well as for voice clips XD

er. point of this is, do research on facts and then look for personal experiences as well. it can add that extra flair if you know more than just what wiki says. 3nodding

The amount of research you're willing to do always makes a difference, but i think figuring out what sort of research to do is important. You have to really be aware of how someone's life in the different country is different than here...ex. what sort of school they grew up in, what religion they are, what holidays or traditions do they celebrate, what languages would they have studied/spoken. etc.

I'm questing for a French character. Speaking French and having lived in France will certainly help me a lot ^^; but i dont think it would be otherwise impossible to authentically roleplay a foreigner.

Although doing research on the internet might help, actually living in that part of the world should be the best... Since it's first-hand experience. You know stuff that no internet website can provide.

Thus, I suggest asking around. For example, if I'm questing for someone living in say... Scotland, I would ask around to see if anyone in the thread actually lives in Scotland. Researching about Scotland's customs, religions, festivals, way of life, etc. would be important, but when it comes to things not covered on the internet, you could ask that somebody.

Putting off playing a foreign character will be difficult, but it can be done if you'll willing to spend time on research. Practising playing the character can help as well. ^^
