Durem was different from Barton, there was no doubt about it. From the layout, to the atmosphere, to the assortment of shops, even the people shopping were different. Different was good! Especially since Paestri was looking for something special, and she couldn't find it in Barton. It was not for a lack of trying, but she just couldn't seem to locate a store that sold enchanted spice racks.
She had combed Barton for days, and upon confirming that there were no stalls that sold enchanted spice racks, she decided to venture into Durem. Who knows, her luck might change. She had dressed up for this little trip, gone was the apron and the pink dress with the puffy sleeves. Her mama had bought her new clothes and she wanted to try them on. It was daring piece in her own opinion, a bright shock of azure with the skirt ending just above her knees, it off-set the length of the sleeves. Bright, white stockings reached mid-thigh, and her feet were encased in brown buckled shoes.
Stopping to admire herself in a shop's window, she couldn't help but smile at her reflection. And then she thought she spotted a familiar face.
"Mal, is that?"
"Who?" the Intangible groaned from its perch on Paestri's head.

Mayu's sleeves swished along as her hands flew over the keyboard -- a G9 laptop that she had stolen from home. She was seated in a cute little chair in an outside table, thank the lord for Wi-Fi, and was looking up various odd things as she waited for one of the waiters to deliver her food. They were busy dashing about the inside of the store, tending to the many customers' needs, and Mayu couldn't help but think that they had forgotten poor little her sitting alone outside.
She had recieved a costume change in the past few days, and also made two "new" friends. A red-to-white yukata that fell to just above her knees was the new choice of clothing for the young Legend, a more traditional outfit of sorts that was reminiscent of the way she had been living for the past seven years. And as for her friends, they were hovering behind her and watching the LCD screen with interest.
"" Miroku exclaimed, waving a transparent arm about at all of the "wonders" of modern life. ""
The ghosts were quite interested in this new innovation, the "laptop", as Mayu had called it. They were shoving each other aside to try and get a closer look at the screen, and neither one of them was winning.
(( <>'s are Japanese speech, and Kuro and Miroku can be seen and heard by everyone. They can understand everyone, but only speak Japanese. Well, and a few words of English. XD ))

It was Mayu, wasn't it? Paestri wasn't entirely certain, after all the reflection wasn't perfectly detailed. She turned around, sure enough it was her friend! Without bothering to look both ways before crossing the street, Paestri skipped towards the store.
"What are you doing!? What if there was an incoming bus?! You don't just WALTZ over to the other side of a road!!" Malady shrieked at the top of its (non-existent) lungs.
"Mayu!! Mayu!!" Paestri greeted, waving her arms enthusiastically at the other Legend. She noticed there were two wispy people with her, did that mean Mayu also separated her Intangibles from herself? Paestri thought she was the only one who could that.
As if sensing her question, Malady set its red eyes on the ghosts. It snorts, unimpressed.

"Hai..?" Mayu started, before correcting herself. "Yes, who's calling my name?"
She twisted around to see a pink-haired girl and a wispy thingamabobber coming towards her and idly waved as she tried to figure out who the person was. She didn't know anyone with pink hair, or at least, she didn't remember knowing anyone like that..
"" Kuro asked, raising a brow at the hyperactive-looking pink thing that was running at them. Miroku, however, took advantage of this distraction to observe the workings of the "laptop".. thing.
"" she responded, frowning. Perhaps she would remember if she got a chance to chat with the other. She waved the pink-haired girl over with one arm, while batting at Miroku with the other. The laptop was her mother's, and she would FURIOUS if it was damaged or broken. The docile-looking Kimiko was very frightening when aggravated.

Paestri arrived at Mayu's table a little breathless, "Silly Mayu, Paestri was calling you." She giggles in between pants. "Are they your friends?" She then gestures to the two ghosts.
For reason beyond its understanding, Malady thought there was something odd about Mayu. It just didn't know what, and because it didn't, it saw no reason why it should. Although it wanted to know what they were talking about.

"So you are Paestri.." Mayu murmurs to herself, memorizing the name for future uses. "Yes, these are my friends." She nodded to the ghosts, then looked back up at Paestri with a strange face.
"How do you know me?" she asked, with a curious look on her face. She didn't remember any Paestris.. Not at the moment, at least.

Paestri stared at Mayu for the longest time, was her friend making a joke? If she was, Paestri didn't understand it. Regardless, the pink-haired girl burst out laughing, "Silly Mayu, we met when we were itty bitty babies and then there was that time at the HQ where my hair caught on fire. Oh and Loki kissed your hand." She giggled.

"We... did?" Mayu asked, scratching her cheek idly. She was now thoroughly confused. They had met when they were babies? But then she surely would have remembered this girl, right? And who was this "Loki" that she was talking about?
"Erm, you might have the wrong person.." she said, frowning. She didn't remember any of this.

"Oh? Wow, if you aren't that Mayu, then you look a lot like the one I know." Paestri grins, without waiting for an invitation she seats herself beside the girl-who-looks-like-Mayu-but-might-not-be-her. "I'm Paestri, and if you can see the wispy thingie on my shoulder, it's called Malady. So, Mayu-who-does-not-know-me, what's that you're looking at?" She asks, pointing at the laptop. Huni couldn't afford a computer at home, let alone a laptop.

"Okay, Paestri." Mayu nodded, and looked at the strange thing that was settled on the girl's shoulder with interest. "Nice to meet you, Paestri and Malady."
She looked back to the laptop, and noticing the ghosts that were trying to get a closer peek at the machine, swatted them away with her hand. "This is a laptop. Have you never seen one before?" she asked, bewildered. Her family was so obsessed with technology -- Kimiko, in particular -- that the digital marvels of the world were commonplace inside their home.
"What's that thingamabobber.. Malady, on your shoulder? Is it a ghost?"

Malady stuck its tongue out at Mayu, "If you're not her, then why are you calling me a thingamabobber like she did? Unless you're really her and you're just pretending not to know us. If that's the case then you're SICK!" it hissed.
"Mal, shut it." Paestri orders, despite the sweet smile on her face, there was also something menacing in her eyes. Yet the menace is only visible to the Intangible, "Mal's my Intangible, and it's not a ghost. Are those two ghosts?" She points, "And I've never seen a laptop before, why's it called that? It's not shaped like a top, or a lap."

"I might have known you, since you two seem to know me so well, but I don't remember a thing." She tapped a finger on her chin thoughtfully, then proposed an idea. "Maybe it's amnesia! You can't tell if you have amnesia or not, so I might have that.."
She shrugged, and looked to the two behind her. "Yep, they're ghosts, alright. As for the laptop question, I have no idea. The lap part comes from the fact that some people put them in their laps to work, though."
She nodded, a good explanation.

Both were very good explanations as to why this girl was so Mayu and yet wasn't Mayu. "But what's amnesia? And what does the laptop do, exactly? I have another guess why you're Mayu-but-not-the-Mayu, it involves someone making a reeeeeaaallly big gingerbread person, and then they decorated it to look like you. Then they force some Breath into its mouth, paint its eyes with Sight, and douse the entire thing with Animation?"
Malady only stared at Paestri for telling this supposedly stranger more of her secrets. It wished it could clamp itself around Paestri's mouth now and again instead of just perching on her.

"Amnesia is.. oh, lemme just show you." She typed in a web address into the address bar, and pressed enter. A page of the free online encyclopedia flashed up, and she turned the screen so Paestri could see. It was like killing two birds with one stone.
"Gingerbread people?" Mayu frowned, giving Paestri a strange look. She had heard of gingerbread cookies.. but not gingerbread people. What was this girl talking about?

The dark-skinned Legend scooted closer to Mayu to read the explanation of amnesia. She smiles at the other girl "Yes, Gingerbread People. Very hard to make, very tricky to control, and lots of people mistake them to be meat puppets. But they're not made of meat, just gingerbread."
Without giving Mayu's expression a second thought, she continued to read. "So a laptop is like a dictionary? Only without paper?"
