Ok, so I'm 5 months pregnant and I was wondering if it's bad to sleep on my stomach... I fall asleep on my side, but sometimes I wake up on my stomach and I didn't know if it could hurt the baby or not.

Another query... Why do all the pregnancy books say it's better to sleep on your left side than your right? What's the difference?

Lots of thanks to anyone with the slightest clue to my questions. wink

I've been told that you have better circulation if you sleep on your left side. I guess it is s'possed to be more comfortable and make it so your limbs do not fall asleep.

You should ask your doctor about sleeping on your stomach. As, I am not too sure about that.

I don't think sleeping on your tummy is as painful for the baby as it will be for you, really. Once you hit a certain gestation it just seems uncomfortable to even attempt it.

As for sleeping on your left side, it helps circulation because evidently the position puts less strain on your heart and therefore allows things to "flow" easier. I slept on my left side throughout my pregnancy - my preference just worked out that way. I couldn't even roll on my right side without becoming frustrated. xD

You can sleep on any part of your body that is comfortable.

While sleeping on your left side IS better for your circulation and you'll have less problems GENERALLY with just body aches and whatnot you are not going to kill a fetus by sleeping on your right side, or even your back although later on sleeping on your back might make your legs tingly and feel like they've "fallen asleep" due to the weight of the uterus pinching nerves (Note you're not supposed to labor FLAT on your back though for completely different reasons).

You can ABSOLUTELY not hurt a baby by sleeping on your stomach. It doesn't matter two ways to them. If you could comfortably (for you) sleep on your stomach even at nine months it would not hurt the baby. You can't sleep on your stomach at nine months only because sleeping on a basketball is not so comfortable. They're behind your stomach and abdominal muscles inside the closed up uterus cushioned by a bag of waters. They have no clue.

I managed to psuedo sleep on my stomach by propping myself up enough on one side with a body pillow to allow room for my stomach.

The left side thing is due to the location of the major blood vessels in your body lying on the left side promotes flow through the inferior venacava and helps circulation throught he whole body including baby

But what I was saying is that even if you don't lay on that side of your body your blood isn't going to start to magically stop flowing.

It's just a good idea. It's not something you HAVE to do.

Everybody keeps saying " Sleep on your left side!!!!" but i totally agree and if you sleep with your left arm straight up and your head is just lightly resting on it, it's much more comfortable and doesn't really cut off circulation
