Well, I came to ask for suggestions on a book to read (as though I don't have a long enough waiting list), but then I got to thinking about all the similar, scattered threads. So I decided to just make it a sticky. 3nodding

If you're looking for a kind of book, post a summery of what you're looking for.

If you're responding to someone's request, give a summery (without spoilers, please!) of the book.

I am looking for a good mystery book. A really good one. I've read several Nancy Drews, as well as all of Sherlock Holmes, so I'm not looking for those titles. Any suggestions?

Do you want mysteries that are set in contemporary settings? If that's not a main factor in your selection, I would suggest Lynda S. Robinson's Lord Meren mysteries. There are six books in the series and they take place in Ancient Egypt during the reign of Tutankhamun, when the pharaoh is at the age of fourteen. Lord Meren is the Eyes and Ears of the Pharaoh and it is his job to protect the king and reign in the crime that plagues the capital. The first book in the series is Murder in the Place of Anubis if you are interested. I thought that the first three books were good reads, but the series starting to go downhill for me during the last three when Meren becomes obsessed with the late Nefertiti. Books five and six were predictable for me, but overall I did enjoy the books because I liked the mystery, the characters, and the setting of ancient times.

Men wearing Egyptian kilts are oh so sexy! *drools*

Thank you, it really sounds quite interesting. I hope to get my new library card today or tomorrow, so I'll check it out. 3nodding

Glad to be of service! ^_^ I have some more Egyptian mysteries that were recommended to me, but I haven't gotten around to getting them from the library.

Are you a fan of short stories, Fairgrass? In a collection of mysteries that my mother bought for me there is this one tale written by Robert Bloch called "Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper." I think it is a nice little read if you can find it. The book I have it in is The 50 Greatest Mysteries Of All Time compiled by Otto Penzler, if you fancy some short mysteries. I haven't read all of them, but I rather liked that one. A psychiatrist hears a fantastic tale from a man who is hunting for Jack several decades after the gruesome White Chapel murders, and the absurd explanation for why the killer committed those crimes.

I can't really think of any more mysteries offhand.

I would like to ask for recommendations now! ^_^

I was wondering what a good historical romance title to read would be. I don't really have any preference for a specific time period, but there are some things I would like of the characters. For the love of reading please give me a leading female who is not so annoyingly arrogant/sexually naive (I suppose this is the best way to describe what I am trying to avoid) that I wish to kill her after page one. Also I would like to have a leading male who actually has weaknesses apart from the fair sex (at least that's how I guess you'd phrase it). I know these paperback romances are hopelessly cliched and this might be too much to ask, but is there a rare gem out there that breaks these rules?

Hi, I'm sorry if this isn't allowed but I'm looking for some books to read. As of late, I'm really craving a romantic fantasy book. One that has supernatural things in it (like witches, werewolves, magic, etc) but also a splash or so of romance. Do you know of any ones?

Thanks so much!

Hmm, if you are looking for something sort of short I would suggest either the classic: Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King (I love that book) or Hunters Green by Phyllis A. Whitney

I was hoping someone would respond to your request, because I'd love to read a good romance too. But I've never found one. I did come close, once. Someone gave me a Christian romance (the title was so cliche that I can't remember it), and while it was a little melodramatic, the girl wasn't a silly pushover, and the guy was the kind I'd actually like to meet. Since it was set in before the Renaissance, the religion in the book didn't seemed forced, so that was nice. I think the girl's name was Rose, and that was most of the title. Sorry I don't have anything else ... maybe look into Christian romance? You might get lucky. neutral

I read a Christian romance several years ago. I think it was called Love Comes Softly and took place in 19th century United States. I think I rather liked it. As long as the romances aren't Left Behind-preachy, I think I can handle them. xd Thanks for the idea!

I'm going to be going on a trip soon and I'm in the process of deciding what to read while I'm there. I'm into Fantasy, Fiction, and Mystery. Any suggestions?

Since no one else has responded, I'll go out on a limb and recommend a book I haven't read. The Last Unicorn is on my summer reading list because I've heard what an excelent book it is. If you haven't seen the movie, it's about the last remaining unicorn searching to find out where all the other unicorns have gone. She meets a magician (or sorcerer, I'm not sure which he calls himself) and a woman, Molly, along the way who help her in her quest. Eventually, it leads her to a castle belonging to a hardened, old king ...

It's a fantasy written by Peter S. Beagle.

I think my feelings about this novel were effected by the fact that I spent so many years before reading it seeing the animated film. I didn't like the book as much personally, but I do know people who really enjoy the book.
