Current Assignment:
A creative re-invention of an object, place, or time. A good example would be American McGee's Alice which focuses on a well known, common fairy tale but changes the mood and the theme of the story. For this assignment, it is not neccessary to focus on the techniques but expand more on your creativity.

This challenge will require a completed image (see rules) of at least one figure rendered in perspective.

Please have your deposits to SAWGWG by Sept. 5th ~ Sept. 14th, by midnight. The challenge will end Sunday, Sept. 14th, at midnight PST (Pacific Standard Time – GMT -8.).

Resources:
Looking for more information on the current challenge? Need help on your piece? Visit the SAWGWG resource thread. (Week two begins on the first page, post number five.)

Note: Since this assignment was put up a little late. There will be 2 extra days to compensate. However, the next assignment will still start on sunday.

Also, post your finished work here. I decided to cut the completion thread altogether, it's just too much hassle.

Started mine.

Once upon a time I got it into my head to make a soft sculpture of Ozma of Oz (I'm currently working on her). I posted my idea to my LJ and a friend said, "OMG, I'm doing an Oz art project where they are all Gothic" (Neo-Gothic for all you history buffs). So that got me thinking "Gothic Ozma" (again, Neo-Gothic) and I did a ballpoint pen sketch.

Now... I think I shall dust that idea off and run with it... (not the sketch... the old sketch doesn't factor into this) "Gothic Lolita Ozma." Oh... it's going to be so very wrong.

hmmm... still don't know what I'm going to do. Was thinking about continuing with the Mario theme. I'm on an 8-bit video game kick... maybe i'll go with the Blue Bomber and friends for this assignment. Maybe a Blaster Master re invention. Or some kind of figure from Norse mythology.
I've also wanted to do some illustrations inspired by David Lynch's Ronnie Rocket script. The film was never made, but would that count as a re invention?
Hmmm... It could also be fun to do a post apocalyptic sci-fi remake of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I have a feeling I'm not going to make the deadline. We're flooded out here, and pulling 16 hour shifts until further notice. We may have to evacuate.

So I guess I should restate my question, Would doing an illustration based off of a movie script for a film that was never made (in my own style of course) be considered Re Invention? or no?

Unless you can't provide a source that you are in fact re-inventing from an original idea, I don't see how there's a problem.

Looks like I'm the first one to finish, which is odd, since i'm normally a horrible prcrastintaor. I've been known to finish three week illustration assignments at midnight the night before it's due. But once again I am busy this weekend, and it's strangely fun to draw Nintendo characters. I got lazy and ended up just doing Mario Bros again. This time I went with color and Luigi though.

My scanner and I had a fight (thus the smudge bar on the left hand side). I shall rescan in the morning. But it's done... it was scanned in and here it is:

More info....

Title: Gothic Lolita Ozma
Character: Ozma
Creator: Baum
Medium: Mechanical pencil on paper

Why a wooden throne? I don't know... I wanted it to be dark and NOT blend in with her dress... the first thing I thought of was to hint at a wooden texture.

And yes... Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Woodsman are her playthings. Originally there was going to be a wizard and a slavegirl Dorothy but they just seemed like add ons and I took them out.

That's great and all, but well, I don't see how that fits the criteria of reinvention. Maybe you could clear that up for me in words?

um... I drew him in my own style?
heh, I dunno. I have to much respect for the base material to change it too much, I would rather just do something original. ... at least that's what I tell myself, I was also too lazy to do anything too original.

Yeah... on the right side, top you can see the outline of what would have been the wizard. I used too much pencil pressure to get him out completely.

BTW, where is the completion thread?

But the assignment is designed to excersize your creativity. That is more of a fanart than reinvention.
Ermmm.... I'll let it slip this time, but next time please try to stay with the assignment.

And Leloi, I've decide to have people post their assignments in this thread.

Heh, ok. Don't let it slide though. That's why i'm so bad at getting things done. Keep me monies.
