Can someone please explain to me just what it is?
I've read it means something like "law", and from my general readings that it's stuff that...one ought to do, that it's right to do.
Am I way off?

Dharma is a sanskrit word that means "statute" or "law". In Buddhism, it is several things.

The Buddha's teachings are the Dharma, as is our code of conduct for enlightenment. The Dharma could also be one of the minute elements that makes up the everything.

It's a carry-over from Hinduism and the Brahman concept (or was it Atman?) where everything is essentially the same one "thing".

Atman's the soul concept from Hindusim, but the idea of everything returning to/being part of Brahma is a big part of it. We've got no-soul over here (anatman, I think it's called), but there's still an idea of everything with Buddha-nature.

Dharma is a word we borrowed from them too, by the way - it just means The Way. There's more than one Dharma, we just happen to be following the Dharma of Buddha. Hindi and Jain followers follow different Dharmas as well. 3nodding

Ha ... well, I thought dhrama actually means truth or knowledge ... where 'the dhrama or truth is all around us' ... I heard it from somewhere that the Buddha once explained that the dhrama that he is showing us, is but a handful of leaves in a forest ... where this handful of leaves is the path to enlightenment ... sweatdrop
