A Tavern for the Journeymen

It's a long walk between towns in any part of the world. No matter who you are, where you're going or what your motives are, it's a long and depressing trek from one point of reality to another. In the gray area, your journey time, it is not so realistic. Travelling companions are hard to come by. Silence is not so easily discovered. Sane thoughts are pretty much a myth when between towns. In these forests, swamps and roads, you are bound to get lost. No map can lead you through your journey. Each step you take forward is into a never seen before unknown. The path you travelled from will always be unrecgonizable. Sadly, it is said that they best way to travel in this world is to close your eyes, cover your ears, hold your breath the best you can and just run for it. But, the road is much too long for that.

The inevitable journey of life has brought you here to this forest. Its foliage is lush, its wildlife plenty. But, you cannot recall ever remembering the place. No one told you about there being a forest between your home and your destination, but then, no can truly recall their journey of life. You let out your held breath and admit, you are lost. A glint of finely crafted wood catches your eye. Through the leaves and vines, you can make out a roof high up. Funny, you did not notice the roof when you first examinded your surroundings... Perhaps, this place can show you the way to your destination. You run towards it, your head held high to gaze at its rough bark walls and its pine shingled roof. When you reach its base, you realize that it is up in the trees of the forest, swaying gentlely in the evening breeze. You call up for help. It continues to sway, back and forth, like a tiny flower boat over a relaxing stream. It mesmerizes you. Soft sounds of the woodpecker stop. Your crazed thoughts are capped and a silver ladder descends from the door of this house. With an air of an angel, you float up the ladder, hardly noticing the gravity that pulls you downwards. You rise up into the one roomed tavern and take in its dew-like scent.

The room is larger than portrayed on the outside, complete with several gray tables and dozens of ornate, flashy chairs surrounds the small tables. The chairs ranged from ones decorated with leaves, king's thrones, mere sticks, clothed beauties, the finest imports and chairs as round as the sky. Each table is the exact same, each the carbon copy of the one next to it. Along the north wall, opposite to you, is a bar. Barrels of ale teeter on the edge and a wash basin for the use of all sits on the other end. Behind it lies the greatest collection of drinks from around the world and universe. Color, texture, size, smell, taste, smoke color and bubbling tendency, they are all there, ready to be ordered. Along the eastern wall, there is a huge fire place, stretching along the entire east wall. Its flames dance with the fury of a thousand lost souls, its colors changing from cool to warm like a never ending spectrum. Never are the colors quit the same as before. The ceiling is made of twisted vines and straw. The rafters seem to do nothing in the way of holding it up. The life of Earth holds itself up.

From a door next to the bar, a person emerges. His hair is white and long, half of it covering half his face. His dress is a finely tailored suit, made of black and silver threads. A red cloth sits in his pocket. His shoes shine like the moon above and his smile draws you towards him.

"Welcome, journeyman. We have foreseen your arrival to this twilight."

One really wonders if death should be this sweet and pure.

Rules and realizations:
1. You know the drill. ToS. Guild rules. Basic courtesy.
2. Seeing that this is a tavern, not much of a profile is required. But please, PM your profiles to me, Mephistophelian Sociopath.
3. Don't disrespect me or the mods.
4. Blah blah blah. Don't swear too much.

:Realize:
I can change the rules.
-
Upon entering this tavern, you realize that your character has died. He/She will not know that. The tavernkeep does. This means that you will not be able to leave the tavern until the tavernkeep allows yous. More than likely, you wouldn't want to leave anyways. If you find out that you are dead, there will be consequences.
-
All characters in this tavern will be human only.
-
Power control is limited. You cannot wield an element or have powerful psychic abilities. You cannot manipulate the known. You can have slight powers, if you wish.
-
This tavern is mainly for character interaction.
-
The tavernkeep is a God figure.

The tavernkeep began his day like everyother day that he had ever seen. And he had seen a great many. He tied back his long, star colored hair with a single black ribbon. The ribbon was unadorned with any other color or plastic toy objects. It was a single, velvet black strip of cloth, still as soft and vibrant as the day he first recieved it as a gift. Wispy strands of shorter hair fell away from his long ponytail, giving him a young complexion and a cheerier grin. The ribbon that held his silver hair was tied twice, once left over right, once right over left. The remaining ribbon length was left to hang with his flowing hair. Content with his accomplistments, he headed out to the main part of his tavern, to busy himself with the cleaning of the bar. He gently glided over to the bar from his backroom, a cleaning cloth already in his hand. His feet walked like any normal being, but his body did not waver or falter to betray the fact that he did in fact step properly. His head remained constant, his shoulders broad and his torso long. The cleaning of the bar was a mindless task, really. The tavernkeep knew that he could spice it up with a self cleaning rag and a firework display of water, but he preferred the mindless. It was peaceful in this world of chaos... He slipped into a more becalmed sense of being as he sweeped the rag about in large circles, ridding the tabletop of dust and grime that collected through the night. It was like cleansing the soul. A morning ritual, to fall away into a state of nonthinking to purify the self. When he thought of nothing, nothing bad would cross his mind. Only the self satsifying sense of ones self. He smiled as he lost his mind.

Hours later, with clean tables, chairs and bar, he replaced the rag on a sort of coat hanging rack. Now, to wait for the costumers.

"Okay then, I'll see ya tomorrow" With a quick nod to her co-worker, Rowena stepped out of the restaurant. It had been a busy day and she was tired. She stepped into her car and checked to make sure she had everything. With everthing in checked, she started her car and headed off.

A bright light and a scream was heard.

Rowena woke up and looked around. her eye sight was blurred and she rubbed her aching head. "Ugh... where am I? And what the hell happened?" Slowly the petite girl got up. She felt even smaller surrounded by massive trees. Rowena wasn't familair with her surroundings nor how she got there. Was it possible that she fell asleep at the wheel and ended up here? Then again, she never recalled passing by such lush woods between her home and her job. Whatever, she just knew she had to get out of there. But how?

She glanced around once more, the sounds of her surroundings seeming to magnify. Finally, she decided to head in one direction, hoping to go stright and find a way out..

Hours later, she still hadn't found her way out. "ugh... well this sucks.. hey wait. Haven't I seen this tree before? Christ, now I'm becoming delusional. I've got to get out of here soon." She looked around once more and saw wht looked like... a rooftop. Could it be? No, it can't. "Great I'm more delusional hen I thought, but I'm here already.... talking to myself...." her words turned into mumbles as she headed toward the 'rooftop'.

Finally she reached the base. "Hello?" she called up though she knew it was crazy to. Then it seemed like something reacted toward her call. the leaves began to sway, leaving her dazed and mesmerized. Next thing she knew a silver ladder descended down from the tree. It was bright, so bright actually that it seemed to glow. Then, she climbed it, though it wasn't like she had the struggle of climbing, it was more like... she was floating up the ladder.

Great this is worse then I thought.

That thought was soon forgotten as she reached the top. The room was big, it looked as if it couldn't even exist from the outside. It had many gray tables and chairs. The chairs seemed to differ from each other. Each having different designs, decorations, or builds. Opposite her was a bar with thousands upon thousands of drinks. Each different from the one next to it. This place seemed to have everything, it was very cozy. the huge fireplace only added to that. The flames danced around like she had never seen fire dance before. It almost looked like they were putting on a show, such as that of a ballerina at a recital.

This is when she noticed a man in the corner. "Why hello." she said softly as she continued to look around. Wait, why was she here again? Her purpose was lost in the admiration.

He felt the soul come. He felt it wander for what seemed like hours to it. He knew it was a young women, he knew that her name wa Rowena and he knew that she had died in a head on collision from a drunken driver a divided farm highway. The driver had been driving on the wrong side of the road as Rowena had rounded a curve. It was impossible to judge which lane the car was it... Another unjustified death. And she had been such a hard little worker, just trying to earn a bit of cash. But, no matter. She was here now, asending his ladder to the invisible light that was not so much a heaven as it was a hell. He decided to not frighten her by greeting her by her real name, as it might frighten her into questioning who he was or how he knew or where she really was. He thought it would be best to just keep his cool and act like a normal mortal. Another rag and a glass found a connection. He began to clean it out as she opened the door.
"Welcome to The Tavern. Original name, huh.", he called out from the bar. In truth, it was The Tavern. The only one around. The last one you'll ever be in, the ultimate of all bars, taverns, night clubs and pubs. But, she wounldn't know that. He smiled at the thought of that secret, but it really looked the smile was for her. that was the perk of being God. No one knows what you think.
"Get you anything, traveller?'
More irony. She wasn't a traveller anymore. This was the end of the line for her. Unless, of course. But, either way, this was the last stop. He pushed up a pair of wire thin black sunglasses to conceal his multicolored eyes and the grin that danced in them. It was going to be a day of fun, a day of fun indeed.

Traveller?

"Uhm... just some water thanks." she said as she sat at a very comfy chair at the bar. Traveller. The word seemed to echo in her mind. Why did this strange man call her a 'traveller'? Why was she here? Why couldn't she remember? Ugh... it all sucked. She was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't even notice the glass of water placed in front of her. "Oh uh.. thanks." she said as she took a sip.

Come on think... what was it. Why are you here? Think think!!

She was thinking so hard that she could've sworn that her head was throbbing.. visibly. Not that anyone was there to see, just the one guy here. she looked around once more. No one was there. She found that a bit odd, but then again they were in the middle of nowhere. How was there even a tavern here? ugh.. too many questions no answers.. wait. Questions... she got it! That's what she was gonna ask.

She finished her water and put it down, looking up at the man. Why was he wearing sunglasses? It wasn't that bright in here and she would've loved to see the eyes of the person who was oh so kind to her in this place. "Thank you, but I should get going. How much do I owe you and uh... how do I get out of here?" she asked as she went for her purse to pull out a dollar or two.

As he notice her reach in her purse to pull out the expense, he couldn't help but give a saddened smile. It was going to be an interesting time with this one, so eager to go back to the world she didn't know she had left.
"Here, there is no need for paying. Plenty of water." he said pointly. He cocked his head towards her emptied glass and went back to busying himself with cleaning some more glasses. The cup was filled with water again, crystal clear, cool and crisp.
"Feel free to have anything you like, no one is stopping you from enjoying... life. As for the exit, I'm afraid that it's not a great time to be leaving this place. Night is falling and when the blackness devours the land, the land is no longer a nice place to reside. You would be best off to stay here for a while. The forest is a maze afterall. Should you manage to escape, there is no way to be described on how to return to where you came. And as for the emptiness of this place, don't worry. People always come to The Tavern at some point, eh? The drinks are the best, afterall. Can I interest you in some dinner?"
Perhaps a lighter conversation would trail her mind away from leaving.

Outside, the sun was indeed setting rapidly. The trees of the dark green forest cast long shadows against the windows of the tavern. It was definetely getting darker by the second. With a final goodbye, the sun sunk beneath the treeline, reds and pinks reflecting on the puffy clouds for a moment longer. Then, it was black. In the forest, darkness was blacker than black. A whistle, one long meleodous note, broke the nighttime silence. In response, purple and blue flowers bloomed around the ceiling of the tavern, bathing the room in a ethereal glow of angels. It resembled the glow of the moon against a soft river.
"Peanut?' the odd, whistling man offered.

She put the money back and took another sip of water, it was really refreshing. "Uhm... no thanks I'm not hungry. Maybe in a bit okay?" she said softly. "I guess you're right, it seemed pretty late when I got here anyways. I'll head off tomorrow I guess." Suddenly she heard him hum and looked up. It was beautiful sight, the place lit up and flowers covered the ceiling.. it was lovely. They were so pretty. She wondered how he did that, she's never seen it before. Some foreign technology maybe? Her attention was shaken as he asked her a question. "no thanks.. I'm allergic." She said with a small, soft smile.

She sat there... looking into space, her mind running through a million things at once. If asked what she was thinking, she couldn't give a solid answer for she didn't even know what she was thinking. What a cruel world it was. But what could she do right? She was just one person, a small girl trying to make a living. To finish highschool and all. Life sucks with no family, but no one knew that. not even her closest friends, then again, they didn't know much of anything. She didn't even know herself. poor, Rowena. No one to talk to, no one to relate to.

With a heavy sigh she snapped out of it and finished her water. "Thanks again. Business does seem a bit slow though." She looked around, that must've been the understatement of the year. Does he ever get any business? And how the hell did he ever get enough money to pay for all this stuff seriously? It must've cost at least a million to collect those drinks alone. She looked at all the various bottles at the bar, they came from all over the world. Now Rowena thought about staying a bit longer just to try a few herself. I mean where else or when else can you get the opportunity. She figured that she'll just call in sick at school and work tomorrow, yeah that sounded like a plan. No hurry to go back to such a busy and stressful life. Plus this place was really cozy. She felt like she could stay here forever, but she knew she couldn't. She had to go back. There were a lot of things she had to do, like that major exam she had to study for for exaple.

Ugh there was sooo much stress with life right now. A part of her never wanted to go back. With a sigh she put her elbow on the counter and propped her head up on her hand. She was oh so tired and she could feel her head lolling and her eyelids slowly starting to droop. Rowena didn't want to fall asleep here though, it would've been rude to.

"An allergy to the almighty peanut? Sad. Well, at least you don't have to endure peanut butter ever. That concoction makes me shiver. Hey...? You, there will be no sleeping at the bar. Wake up, silly. Trap door in the floor to the left. Open it up, torchs are afalem, pick a room to sleep in if you feel it so nessarcy. All the beds should have sheets, all the bookcases should have a vast collection and the lamp is the old fashioned oil lamp. Just light the wick with the matches. The oil should be filled. Extra blankets in the wardrobe. Towels should be there too. The soaps in the shower are fragenced. Usually lavender, for it helps with sleep. And it agrees with my nose. If it doesn't agree with yours, I've got quite a collection of scented soaps under the sink nearest the shower. And forgive the wooden showers and sinks. I prefer that too porclian."

He went back to cleaning his glasses with a rag that seemed to never dirty. With the professional coordination of an experienced juggler, he arranged the glasses in a delicate pyramid shape right on the wood of the bar. He left the very tippy top glass on the counter to fix himself a drink.
"Now, where did I put that... Ah, here we go. And, you, Rowena. the kitchen is always open if you decide to have a late night snack. Just ring the bell over there." He pointed to the edge of the bar, where a small crystal bell stood in silence. the man busied himself withplaced six purple leaves at the bottom of his cup and smushing them with his thumb. The leaves crinkled and gave away to tiny pieces easily. After a while of that, he poured a blue liquid into the glass; the leaves floated contently around the sea. He dived under the bar for a second and reappeared with a cherry and a pink stirring rod. The juice of the cherryt went into the mix, the fruit of it went into his mouth while he mixed the liquid. The leaves dissolved and the stirring rod did too. With a smile, he whirled around his drink for good measure before taking a small sip.

"Ahh, a Cherry Goldstien. Nothing can compare to the heavenliness of this drink. Besdies a good old fashioned tequila." he mused.

"Heh yeah... I guess so.." she stated about the peanut as she was coming back to full consciousness, though she wasn't exactly asleep. Rowena just gave a small smile as he commented on his drink. Quite the comedian this one. She was sure that she would enjoy his company for the time she would be there. Her gray eyes looked at him for a moment before wandering around again. "Uh thanks, I'm sure I'll find everything everything quite alright, especially if the room is as nice as the tavern, though I hardly have any complaints about places anyways. The room sounds lovely, thank you for taking me in for the night."

Slowly she got her tired body up out of the seat and headed left, for the trap door. She stopped for a moment... maybe it'd be best if she ate before going to bed. She stood there contemplating the situation. A few minutes later she decided that it wasn't the best idea to eat heavily before going to bed. She'd probably just eat a good breakfast before leaving, or waking up in the middle of the night for a nice snack. She wasn't too sure at the moment though, then again when was she ever really sure about things? Ugh.. whatever.. she was just really tired.

Just as she was about to open the trapdoor and descend, something came into her mind. Again she stood there... looking down at the trapdoor in front of her. "You know..." she started as she lifted her gaze to look at him. Slowly she made her way toward him again, her movements slow with body language full of questioning. "I don't recall telling you my name. How did you know?" She said forcefully, her eyebrow cocked up. She crossed her arms and her eyes just said it all. Suddenly there was a cloud of tension between the two.

He cocked his brow in a comedic fashion as he set his drink down on the table. He wasn't thick, he knew that she never said her name, he knew what he was saying. It was on purpose afterall. Just to see if she was paying attention. Apparently, the trick worked quite well. He looked at her eyes, the eyes that demanded an answer right this very second. A grin found its way to his sharp face, his two toned eyes twinkling merrily. With a voice filled with bright laughter, he stated,
"I am not as unobservant as one might think. Inside your purse, there is a name tag, no? I caught a fleeting glimpse of it. 'tis an interesting name. Not many people have it."

He took a sip from his outlandish drink, his soul searching eyes still watching her carefully. He pulled out another pink stirring rod and carefully brewed it into the mixture. The color of the drink maintain a healthy blue.
"I am sorry if you find that odd, my eagle eyes."

She stood her position while he stated his reason. Even with it she looked at him not satisfied. Finally she rolled her eyes and about faced. "Whatever.. g'night." she said as she once again made her way toward the trap door. This guy was right though, she did indeed have a name tag in her bag, her badge for work. Maybe she was just a bit too paranoid, it was kinda late afterall.

Upon reaching the trapdoor again, she looked up at the tavernkeeper once more, making sure he wasn't doing anything too.. out of the ordinary. He did kinda scare her actually. Finally she turned her gaze away and lifted the door, she descended making sure that she shut the door behind, or should she say above her. Inside it was dim compared to the tavern above, but the many torches that lined the walls provided enough light with enough light to move around without too much trouble.

Finally she chose a room, it was the second one to the right. Opening the door, she stepped in and looked around, locking the door behind her. It was nice, not exactly Presidential Suite at the Four Seasons, but it was nice. Clean and cozy... that's all she really needed, so it would do.

The teen walked over to the oil lamp and examined it for a minute before she picked up a match, stroke it, and lit the lamp. The room was better lit now, made it a bit more homey. Putting her purse on the bed side table, she looked through the woredrobe. There were a nice assortment of blankets, some down while others were cotten and some were heavy whereas others seemed to be throw blankets. Seemed that there was something for everyone, which was good. Same was to be said about the towels in there as well.

Rowena quickly picked a nice soft cotten towel and headed toward the bathroom. She hung the towel on the shower rack and squatted down to the cabinet under the sink where, as the tavernkeeper had promised, lay a variety of fragraced soaps. She looked through them, chamomile, vanilla, green apple, among many others. This place really did adhere to everyones preferances. Deciding that she would just go with the already picked lavender, she tunred back to the shower. Slowly she took of her clothes, folded them and placed them on the countertop. She'd have to wash them tomorrow for later use.

She stepped into the shower and set the water. It was hot, she room got steamy in no time, but it was just the way she liked it. It felt so good to take a nice hot shower after a long day. It had indeed been a long day, and the relaxing aroma of the soaps made it that much better. After a good half-hour she turned the water off, got out and wrapped herself in the towel.

Rowena walked toward the mirror and wiped it clear of the steam. In the cabinet behind the mirror, she found a toothbrush a paste. She brushed her teeth then headed back to the room. Remembering that she saw some clothes in the waredrobe, she went to it and got a comfortable oversize shirt and some loose fitting shorts. She put these on and hung her wet towel in the bathroom. Going through her purse, the petite teen pulled out a small brush and started brushing her hair.

Looking around, she saw a well stocked book shelf, again promised by the tavern keeper. Walking toward it, her eyes wandered through the many volumes of it. There seemed to be something from every genre, horror, mystery, fantasy, love, romance. You name it, some kind of it was here. every noe and again, Rowena would pull out a book and read over its summary, many times putting it back. She just couldn't decide what she should read, so many of these sounded really good. Finally she saw one that just sparked her interest. It was a collaboration of everything she liked in a book, fantasy, horror, and mystery with a hint of that romance but not enough to make her sick so to speak. So she brought it back to the bed. She sat down, got comfy with a pillow or two and a down blanket. Then she opened up the hardcover and began reading by the light of an old fashioned oil lamp.
