But... wouldn't it make for more happiness amongst us if they were portrayed by Asians... like they're supposed to? I don't really like
NGE (it depresses me), but even if that little attempt at non-Americanization was made (if Hollywood actually made a movie), I would feel less like it was being... raped...
gonk Okay, just pretend I wasn't talking.
Except they pulled a Constantine and it's in San Franciso 3 instead of Tokyo 3. I've hated this from the beginning, and the concepts for the EVAs are just hideous, but I'll stick it out anyway and post some casting ideas keeping in mind the fact that we have no idea how they will be characterized in the movie. Will Asuka still be verbally and physically abusive? Will Gendo still be trying to kill God? Will Shinji still be a self loathing coward? We just don't know.
Shinji: This to me is probably the most difficult role to cast based on the shortage of male teen actors that aren't being exploited as heart-throbs. Back in the day I would have said Elijah Wood or the kid with the hard to spell name from the Home Alone series. They were together in The Good Son where the Home Alone kid who's name I can say but cannot spell was a sociopath intent on killing Hobbit boy, which is a testament to his ability to be a disturbed individual. Elijah Wood has always creeped me out and although he was quite clearly born to play Kevin in Sin City, Shinji would have been an excellent choice for him as a youth. Jake Gyllenhall would also be great were he not too old.
I guess the kid from the Sixth Sense could pull it off, he knows how to be tortured and his career is badly in need of revival.
Asuka: Hillary Duff is a cardboard stand up that you use to sell cola with, not an actress and that's all I have to say on the matter. The difficult thing about casting this role is that she's an anime archtype and one that doesn't translate well. I really can't think of a western version of the abusive female love interest. I mean let's face it she's completely interchangable with Naru Narusagawa except for the emotional baggage. Again, teen actors are being bred for different fare than this, so finding effective actors to fill these roles is nowhere near as easy as it is for comic books. Probably the girl from Gilmore Girls that also showed up in Sin City.
Rei: Indulge me this one delusion that the movie will not be set in San Franciso and all is as it should be. In this fanciful scenario, the best actress for the role would be cast. Chiaki Kuriyama. Go Go Yubari. Girl #13 (Battle Royale). She even has pedigree in this genre. She was on the ******** live action Sailor Moon show with the stick on eyes Luna plushie. Of course this is the biggest pipe dream ever.
Gendo: Gary Oldman could do it. It's been mentioned before and I'll parrot it shamelessly. Not to mention the shirt he wore in Lost in Space was pretty close to his NERV shirt. W00t. Too bad Christian Bale isn't old enough. Le sigh. Brian Cox would rock this role hard too, but he's old and fat. Double sigh.
Ritsuko: Julia Stiles, she can be a cold, commanding b***h if she wants to be and she fits the age requirement.
Misato: Reese Witherspoon. I feel dirty saying it, but oh ******** well, it works.
Kaji: Jason Lee. I shouldn't need to explain that one. He just rocks. Hard.
