Gaius emerged in a dark room where objects were nothing but blurred outlines against chrome walls. A single naked bulb dangled in the center of the room, a pull chain attached, and several pieces of furniture were strewn about the room; an overturned wooden chair in the corner, a coffee table with uneven legs slanted in the center, and an ornate, Roccoco-esque chair, with vibrant red cushions sewn with gold embroidery.

Of course, since it was dark, Gaius could see none of this.

It was not an easy emergence. His flower - clover, more like - was divided into three sections, and thus Gaius had come out in three different areas all at once. His head cleared the first leaf, and his arms and legs divided between the other two. Thankfully, he emerged all in one piece, and sat quietly on the table where his bloom rested, resting after the ordeal of suddenly having limbs, wings, hair, a tail.

He folded his wings down and shut his eyes, leaning forward to rest his forehead against his knees. He didn't feel tired, not exactly, more like... drained. This emergence process was not a pleasant one. But he existed and was free of the bloom, which he supposed was a good thing. And gradually, objects were becoming more sharp and visible. He could now make out distinct outlines of things, but he did not understand what they were or where he was.

Soon as Gaius was able to stand - which was relatively quickly, as Gaius had been born able to withstand great amounts of pressure, pain, and exhaustion - he took his first real look around the room, then glanced up at the bulb in the center. After a moment of contemplative blinking, he decided that was indeed the light source that had previously illuminated the room when others had been in it, and decided to turn it on himself, so that he could better observe and understand his surroundings.

Gaius gave his wings an experimental flick. They were red and black; Gaius decided he liked these colors, and that they complemented oned another nicely. However, the real subject at hand was this: would they propel him up and towards the bulb? He supposed there was only one way to find out in the long run.

With hesitant steps, Gaius neared the edge of the countertop and looked down. It was quite a drop for a feien small as he was. Another flick of the wings. And another. And another.

Suddenly, the drop expanded as Gaius' wings dragged him upward, slowly but surely, and he decided that this was what flying was, and was glad that it was an innate gift, since he assumed it would be a very difficult thing to learn. Admittedly, the constant movement of his wings made his back somewhat sore, but he assumed he'd adjust to it in time.

So it came to be that Gaius reached the chain. He gave it a strong yank and the lightbulb burst into brilliance. Gaius smiled, obviously pleased with his accomplishment. He had made light - and it was good.

Nero was drifting the hallways, as he normally did when he had nothing better to do - kept him in shape and his wing muscles strong and working. Gogol had never flown - poor Gogol - and had lost the use of his wings, or so he claimed. Nero feared the same would happen to him and thus used them regularly, occasionally poking his head into the nearly endless amount of rooms in the labs, discovering new things, befriending mutants.

And, other days, he went to visit his brother. But today wasn't such a day.

As he floated past Gaius' room he didn't notice anything - at first. After a few moments, he realized that there had been something different about the room, and turned around to look.

Light, under the crack of the door. That was certainly odd! Puchiko had a strict policy of conserving electricity and normally everyone adhered to it. Well, he'd just go in there and shut it off, then. Nero flapped towards the handle and, with a bit of the grunt, pulled it downward and pushed it open.

He was met by the stare of three unblinking eyes, each regarding him with almost zen-like patience, set in an emotionless face.

"Hello," said the stranger.

Nero's mouth immediately split into a wide, toothy grin.

"Gaius?" he asked, moving towards his brother. Gaius was hovering near the lightbulb, almost like a moth, arms wrapped around the chain dangling from it.

"If that is what you wish to call me," Gaius replied, with the faintest of shrugs.

"That's your name," Nero corrected gently. "And I'm Nero. I'm your brother."

"You don't look like me." Gaius pointed out.

Nero's smile remained intact. "Believe me, I'm your brother," Nero replied, suddenly enveloping Gaius in a warm embrace. Gaius stiffened, eyebrows knitting together, fists clenched at his side. Eventually, Nero released him, eyes bright.

"You're so handsome! Arturo will approve of you, you look just like him."

"Is he our brother too, then?" Gaius asked.

Nero shook his head. "Father."

"Ah," Gaius replied simply.

An awkward pause stretched out between the two, Gaius blinking demurely, Nero staring at him expectantly. Eventually, Nero cleared his throat. "Would you like to see the rest of the feien?" he offered, smiling.

"If you feel that I should, then I will see the rest of the feien."

Nero frowned slightly, more out of confusion than anything else. "Well, it's more your decision than mine, really. The other feien are quite nice, I'm sure you would like them a lot!"

"One cannot make that assumption. Especially since you know very little about me," Gaius said automatically. His cool eyes regarded Nero patiently, as if he were instructing a child.

Nero grinned, unphased. "Only one way to find out, correct?"

"You are correct." Gaius conceded. "However, I would like to remain by myself for a while. I must figure a few things out."

"Oh. Well. I'll leave the door open then, all right? Shout if you need us - there's usually someone nearby," Nero said hesitantly. He didn't want to leave his new baby brother all by himself, but Gaius seemed to prefer being alone... At least for now, Nero figured. He'd warm up eventually.

"Thank you. I appreciate your concern." Gaius said politely, giving a small nod of respect.

"You're welcome," Nero replied, creasing his forehead. What a strange feien. So remote. Ah, well! Nero gave Gaius another hug - this time, the feien responded by clearing his throat pointedly, which Nero ignored - and soon drifted out, leaving Gaius alone once more.

Gaius moved back to the counter top, sitting down and considering what had just happened. He had a brother, he had a father. He had a family. His brother was nice but had a tendency to grab him in ways that Gaius found to be unpleasant. His father looked like him, but his brother did not. Gaius need only shout if he needed something, yet he needed nothing but to be left alone, and thus should not shout. A conundrum? Perhaps. No, not at all.

Gaius shut his eyes once more, fingers clasped in front of him. He almost wished he could return to his bloom.

It was a usual day of rolling about in the playpen for both Xana and Courage, biting and clawing and grunting, each tangled in the other as they wrestled to hone their "skills." Eventually Courage managed to get the baby flat on his stomach and perched carefully on his back, looking extremely accomplished. Xana gave a little wail of dismay and Courage hopped off him, licking his face to show that there were no hard feelings. Xana angrily bit down on her ear and Courage yowled loudly.

Haha! Her fault for letting her guard down.

The wrestling continued, with Puchi watching over it to make sure things didn't get out of hand. What the two lacked in skill they certainly made up in ferocity. If Puchi wasn't sure that the two needed one another to survive, she'd be afraid they would kill one another. But still, they did little things to insure that the other never got hurt; Courage only hit with the pads of her paws and never with her dangerous looking claws, and it's wasn't like Xana's biting would do much good anyway, since he had no teeth.

They were - dare she say it? - almost cute together.

Eventually, both cub and baby were exhausted, draped over the other in a Kodak moment that should have been on calendars worldwide. Puchiko, figuring that they had had enough, carefully stepped back to allow the two to nap.

Xana yawned hugely, nestling into Courage's warm fur, while the lioness gently laid her head over his. She had seemed to have matured more rapidly than Xana, who still pretty much had the mentality of a baby - unsurprisingly. But more than a friend now, Courage had become something of a mother. After all, it was she who understood Xana best. A happy little sigh bubbled forth from the baby as his wide brown eyes closed, fingers locking on to bunches of golden fur needily. Courage simply watched over Xana protectively, occasionally licking his hair. This was her cub - despite her being no older than Xana herself - and she didn't intend to let any harm come to him. Her golden eyes eventually slitted shut, and soon she too was snoring.

A few hours later Xana awoke, stretching luxuriously. He banged his gauntlet against the bars of the playpen to signal his newly-awoken status, and Courage - who had rolled to the otherside of the playpen during their nap - jolted awake. Xana giggled loudly and gestured her over, pointing with one chubby arm at the new, mysterious person staring at them, perched neatly on the bars.

"Hello," the person said. It was extremely small - so small that even Xana could hold it in his hands, if he wanted to. A pair of wings protruded from his back, leathery looking things, occasionally moving this way and that in order to maintain balance. But perhaps - most unusual of all - were the three eyes blinking down at the baby and his daemon.

Courage's reaction was immediate. This was, obviously, food. She glanced over at Xana, waiting for the go-ahead, but he was too busy staring at the strange little being hovering above them.

"Mmmph," Xana said urgently, gesturing down into the crib. He was intrigued by this... thing. Had no idea what it was. Friend or foe? Only one way to find out!

Gaius - as was the small person's name - shook his head quietly. He had no intention of coming down, not with that lion cub staring at him hungrily. "I just wanted to introduce myself," he explained.

Both daemon and baby stared at him, confused. He spoke the same language as the giantess - and thus neither of them understood a word.

"My name is Gaius. I have heard that you are Quixana and Courage. It is very nice to meet you. Why doesn't the lion attack you?"

Xana and Courage stared at one another, eyebrows furrowed together. Such gibberish. It made no sense.

Gaius sat down carefully, chin in his hand. "That's right. You're not like us, are you? You don't speak once you bloom. Can you understand me? Why. Doesn't. The. Lion. Attack. You."

"Ackack," Xana echoed, best his mouth could.

"I'm beginning to think this is a lost cause," Gaius said, lifting his eyebrow.

"They're just babies, Gaius," Puchi scolded, emerging from the kitchen. She gently lifted the feien off the playpen bar and sat him on her shoulder, offering him a piece of the cookie she was eating. Gaius politely declined.

"Since they're babies they can't talk?" Gaius asked, staring down at the subjects in question. Courage was still staring at him as though he were a large, juicy steak.

"Well, no. Babies are kind of like sponges, you see. They pick up on things and absorb them, but they don't necessarily know what they mean, you see? Think of it like... the bloom stage. You couldn't talk then right, but you could see what was going on?"

Gaius nodded.

"Well, it's like that," Puchi concluded, polishing off her cookie. She offered one to Xana, who immediately broke it in half and shoved his piece in his mouth, while Courage delicately nibbled hers.

"Will they ever grow?" Gaius asked. It seemed rather awful to always be a baby. You couldn't really do much of anything except drool, which Xana certainly did a lot of.

"Human children take a long time to grow. These guys are probably just the same," Puchi explained patiently.

"Ah." Gaius said.

"Ah!" Xana echoed brightly. Puchi sighed and nodded to Gaius, who took the hint and flapped off her shoulder. She then scooped up Xana and began to wipe the crumbs off the baby's face, despite his desperate, wriggling attempts to escape. Eventually all traces of crumbs were removed and Xana was set back in the playpen.

"Maybe I can teach him to speak," Gaius wondered, floating a good distance above the crib.

"Well, you can try, but he probably won't understand anything. Very 'My Fair Lady' of you, though. See if you can make him say 'the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains.' '"

"Does it really?" Gaius asked, blinking at Puchi.

Puchi shook her head and smiled. "He'll grow and speak when he does, Gaius. You can't rush these things."

"Well, he should grow. That way, he can talk. I'm sure he has an awful lot to say."

Xana began to drool, and stuck his foot into his mouth, falling on to his back with a muffled cry of delight.

"Somehow, I'm not so sure," Puchi said, shaking her head.
