It had been a particularly hot day out in Durem. People refused to run their cars for fear of making the air even worse from exhaust, puddles that lingered on from rains before simply withered and were gone- and no one left their central cooling systems.

Fico had been fiddling with the mail that afternoon, when she noticed Nen was a little... too pale for her liking. It should be unhealthy to be that pale, or at least injust. He was busy doing something or other, what it was she didn't really care, as long as nothing dirty was involved.

Jeeze, it was kind of cold inside.

"Would you like to go out, today?" she asked the boy, still cutting coupons sloppily from catalogues, "It's beautiful outside, you know. A perfect day for somewhere like the beach."

Nen, already sweating with the air conditioner only at 70 degrees, froze where he had been walking through the living room. He looked like he had just been caught doing something extremely wrong.

"Bu'ma, isso hot... out," he swallowed nervously, "I don' wanna."

Fico got a gleam in her eye just then, and Nen knew that gleam. They'd be going no matter what, through hell or highwater, and that would mean three layers of SPF 60...

An hour later, the duo had arrived at the beach- one obviously more happy about it than the other. Fico had to drag Nen out of the car, slather him with more sunblock, grab the towels and umbrella, before shoving him off into the hot sand to get the boy got running.

Maybe he was just trying to seek out some shade for his feet.
Oh well.

"Rhea!" Elysia shouted down the hall in an attempt to wake the youngster from her sleep. She had been rather grumpy lately, and Elysia couldn't imagine why. Life had been going wonderfully--well, except for what seemed like PMS hitting Rhea hard. Elysia thought that maybe she'd feel good about getting out of the house. After all, they did live right on the beach.

"Put your swimsuit on, we're going to go lay out for awhile. You need to get out of the house!" She headed down the hallway purposefully, rapping loudly on the door.

A mere second or two later, Elysia heard a voice ringing through her head.

But Mommmmmmm!! It's so early!!!

It was like the shot heard round the world as Elysia clutched her head. "Hey now young lady! No need to yell. That hurts me you know! Now put on your suit and get downstairs. We'll leave in five minutes."

With that, she stalked back down the hallway, now a bit pissy herself. That was not the way she wanted to get started in the morning. Now all she needed was a relaxing time by the water. It would help. It would. She tried to convince herself, but she wasn't really sure. It was strange for the little girl to be in such a bad mood.

A mere three minutes later, Rhea stomped down the stairs reluctantly. Her hair was tangled up--she hadn't even had time to brush it, and the braid and feather hung down her back, the only thing that was behaving.

"Fine. I'm here. Let's go." With that, she walked out the back door and down to the trail that led to the beach, her flip flops clacking behind her.

'Great,' Elysia thought to herself. She'd just have to ignore her. Following her down to the trail, Elysia wondered just what had gotten into her.

Nen didn't care where it was he was running to exactly. His feet were on fire, and he could literally feel his skin beginning to sizzle under the deadly UV rays cast out from the sun. There were too many kids playing in the water to even think of going there...

How did people enjoy this!?

Nen stumbled a little, before uttering a gasp of 'oh no' as he watched himself trip over his own feet.
The death sand, it was coming closer and closer...
Thunk.

The boy landed face first in the heat, rolling a bit (of course, so the blazing stuff got all over) before coming to a stop a little ways from what seemed to be a trail. He would have cried out in angiush, but he didn't dare for fear of getting sand in his mouth.

Fico was off setting up the umbrella a ways away, laying out the towels, elaborately dressed in a swimsuit of questionable morality. The woman had put on some sunscreen and was now basking in the shade like some sort of overgrown cat, squinting for Nen.

Where did he go of to? Was that little grey smudge in the distance him, or was it ash? Had to be him. But no worries, as long as she could see the smudge, then things were fine.

As Rhea stomped down the path, she looked up at the sky. It was nice to be outside, she thought. She'd never admit it to her mother though. As far as she was concerned, she didn't have a mother today. She'd hang out on the sand by herself if she had to.

As she came to the end of the path, she tripped over a strange lump that she could have sworn wasn't there a few minutes ago. She definitely didn't realize that it was a small boy who was lying there, seemingly stuck face-first in the sand. "What?!" she cried out as she went flying through the air, seemingly soaring over the boy, about to face the same fate as he had. Her towel and bag went flying, and she landed with a distinct oof!, and rolled over on her back, leaning her head over to look at what had tripped her up.

"Oh, you're a person!" she exclaimed. "What are you doing lying in the sand like this?" she asked, pulling up to her knees, examining them for scrapes. There was a tiny bit of blood, but the cuts were minor. Hopefully they wouldn't sting too much when she got into the water.

Elysia hadn't seen what happened, but she heard Rhea's yell. She ran up ahead, hoping that the little girl hadn't gotten hurt. When she arrived at the scene, no one looked too damaged, and she sighed with relief. "Everything okay here?"

Nen grunted when he felt something trip and tumbled over him, as if he were a speedbump! Oh, the nerve...

"Eatin' tha sand," the boy said sarcastically, though he was quite young to have such a tone. A halo made from black bones swirled lazily over his head as if to punctuate the fact.

Nen picked himself up slowly, trying to work the sand that might have gotten between the bones of his tail. He rattled it, making click clack noises, before he noticed exactly who had gone and tripped over him.

"Oh, I'm sorree," he scooted closer to Rhea then, completely ignoring Elysia to investigate the girl.
He hadn't meant to hurt her. Well, the injuries didn't look terrible anyway, so the boy didn't feel much guilt.

Instead of saying anything else about that, the boy decided it was time to for introductions. After all, he couldn't call this new person 'girl'... that was hard to pronounce.
"Whasser name? I'm Nen."

"Sorry I tripped over you! I was looking at the sky instead of at the ground like I should have been," she apologized, looking quite sorry for the first time that day. Her mood had suddenly changed, and she felt bad for probably kicking the little boy in the side.

Her attention turned to his tail and halo of bones, stark black against the brightness of the afternoon sun. "I like the sound your tail makes," she said, sticking a hand out to him. "It's no big deal about you being there either...I didn't get hurt too much," she said, pointing to the scrapes on her knees. "No biggie! I'm Rhea!" She shook his hand eagerly. She did like meeting new people, even if they caused her to fall down.

Looking down at the pair, Elysia saw that both were alive, and pretty much well. Rhea's scrapes were no big deal. She was a tough kid, and didn't even seem to mind. She breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the more typical, friendly Rhea come out. Thank god she'd changed her tune.

"Looks like you'll live," Elysia said, waving at her daughter. "I'm just going to go lay the blanket and towels down--Get the umbrella set up. Come join me when you're ready," she said, heading to a spot close to the other woman with the umbrella, and waving at the pair.

A big smile spread across Nen's face, as he shook Rhea's hand eagerly back. She was a very pretty girl... looked like she knew a whole lot. Maybe she had some stories to tell?
The boy hoped, anyway, because he most certainly didn't want to go into the water. Or go running out of his spot in the sand... apparently the temperature equalized, or his skin got used to it, or something.

"Thankee Rhea," Nen chirped brightly, "Your eyes is really pretty... wha's that?"

The boy was pointing to the jewel on the girl's forhead with his tail, curious. The tail clinked at it a little, before he sheepishly lowered it into his lap.

Rhea also had pretty swirlies on her arms... but to some people, commenting on that sort of thing might be rude. At least Nen thought so.

Fico on the other hand, had nearly dozed off from the sheer lack of entertainment. Staring at a grey smudge in the distance was kind of boring, after all.
But the woman did notice another coming to sit by her. She didn't mind, just as long as she wasn't here to try and steal anything...

"My eye?" she asked him, looking at his tail and noticing that it was pointed at her forehead. "Oh, my jewel! It's called a psicrystal. It helps me to use my powers," she told him, very matter-of-factly, poking at the gem with her finger. "Your tail and halo are really cool too!" she exclaimed, paying back the compliment.

She thought his ears were nice as well, but didn't say any thing. She wasn't sure if people liked compliments about their ears or not...

Blushing, he finally noticed just how hot it was outside. "Do you want to go in the ocean? Can you swim?" she asked him, noticing that he was not too much younger than herself. Maybe he could swim too, and they could go in together.

"If you're hot, we can go in the water. This sand is burning my feet and legs!" She jumped up off of the sand and extended a hand to him, helping him up. "If you don't like the water, we can at least go sit on the blanket under the umbrella. It'll be cooler in the shade," she said, nodding her head.

"Ya' gots powers?" Nen quieted his voice down, a sudden excitement flaring up in his eyes, "What'uh they do?"

Though the little reaper was still young, his own powers were far too underdeveloped to open the door to the underworld yet. It kind of peturbed him, since he had this crazy ghost dude come to his bed every night asking for the soul quota- but Nen didn't relent. He had nothing to give.
His mom didn't believe him about it, either, but what was really new?

In reality, Nen was hoping Rhea had some sort of power that could help him out.

"Ocean?" he piped up meekly, snapping back out of his daydreaming, "I can't swim... but I'll go if ya teach me?"

The boy took Rhea's hand and stood up, a little unsure. Sitting in the shade sounded far better to the roaring, watery abyss- but it also sounded far more boring. He set his pink eyes on the other girl, hoping she'd have a good answer.
