whoa. sorry. i haven't had time to read through all the posts. sweatdrop
my suggestion, you smear way too much. it makes the pictures look messyalso, try blending different colors together instead of using just one plain color for different areas.
personally, i'm not a big fan of pastels. i rather use color pencils. it's less messy and give me more control.

Hmmm.. Not bad. I would definitely work some more on developing your characters' anatomy first before coloring them. Still, the practice will not be wasted. I kind of liked the phoenix the way it is. The blurriness there helps give it the fiery effect.
I've seen pastels done well enough to look like watercolor, and I adore the Harry Potter covers. I can honestly say good luck with them, however, as I've not yet managed to bring them under my control. gonk

i would say that yes, you smear too much. its a hard habit to get out of, but really try NOT to smear; it makes things look better. for one, because the more you smear (especially if you smear colors together) the more dilluted and less intense the colors are. if you think the colors are too bright, blend (not smear) with white or a lighter shade of the color youre working with. here is a really good tutorial to give you an idea of how things should look and how to make them look that way. http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/farp/theart/ricsattlerpastels/ricsattlerpastels.htmli hope that helps.

it also doesn't help that you use smooth paper [it looks like bond from the pics but i can't really tell] for dry pastel drawings. you should try getting some textured manilla or charcoal paper.

That's not quite what I meant! sweatdrop I meant the artwork from the covers of the Amercian versions of the books! I believe the artist is Mary Grandpre'. Anywho, she uses pastels for the cover art and was my inspiration to even try to begin fooling with them. 3nodding

Hasel I dont think that over here , netherlands, she made the cover's art... Probably not. I've seen several different covers from the books. It all depends on the publisher.
