King Of Ninjas

Last night my friend had a party with a live latin band. He plays trumpet in the top school band, and when the guys from the live band heard, they invited him to play with them for a song. Now the thing is, Will is under the impression that he is good at improv... He has a good feel for the music, he has a good sound, good range, good technique, but he is a 'classical player' in denial.

...needless to say, the outcome was rather... not... good... but we all clapped and yelled and such 'cause it was his 18th birthday etc.

NOW! To my point. He went off, put his trumpet away, and then came and told me about how easy it is to do improv when you understand the music etc. He was 'teaching' me about how to improvise after all but murdering their music...

Discuss:
- Classical players in denial
- Stuck up musicians
- Awesome latin bands

There's actually a guy here, who posted a pretty pompous sax 'solo' here. It was called a "jazz improv" but it wasn't really very much of anything.

Yeah. He's not going to bother coming here.

It was on alto sax, and he pretty much hid the whole time down low, in subtones.

Forgive the sound quality. It was done with a dodgy digital camera. My friend is the... not so good one without the big hair, aka the one on the left.

I got a little scared there until I saw 'on alto sax'. Yay for tenors! Yay for not giving yourself any credit!

----------------

Here's a little message for your friend, from me to him.
He has NO idea how to improvise. There was an extremely distinct difference between the two soloists and imho, he dosn't know how to phrase/ how to make a solo flow. Every time he played, even for a few measures, it ended apuptly, there was never any closing to it.

I can put this another way. Pretend each turn they take is a sentence. The guy with the big hair has an o.k. vocabulary, and can put together relatively interesting sentences that can hold your attention. Your friend however has the tendancy to just kind of bore his audience and stop mid-sentence.

I know when it comes to soloing, I'm not one to talk, but at least I accept that-- this guy sounds like a jerk.

DrkMerchant ^ ^; you know who I was talking about, right?

Btw, those videos are painful. I was just listening to James and Regina Carter trading fours, and they're much better at it.

Yeah, I do. On a completely unrelated topic, I'm saving up $200 this summer to buy a soprano sax!

Nice. Are you looking at a specific horn? Or are you shopping?
PostPosted: Sun Jun 18, 2006 2:48 pm

Well I have to worry about getting the $200 first, but after I do, we'll probably be going to some pawn shops to look. Really, I just want a $200 toy to play with!

I also wanna add that it was a bit mindless for those guys to invite some kid like that. It was a very nice gesture, but it is kinda silly.

Well he is in a school band than came second in an Australia wide competition, judged by James Morrison. Will is a really good player, he just can't improvise and doesnt realise it.

You'd think those guys would guess that though.

They did guess that. He was originally just soloing straight, then the guy suggested trading 4s. He seemed to cut the song short too xp

Who are you talking about Ash? Is it someone in this guild? Are you talking about me?

Oh and this thread is a combination of two threads already created but i dont mind. The threads are the stuck ip musicinas thread and what makes a good musician great or something like that.

The stuck up musicians is more of a celebrities/people who you don't know type of thing, whereas this is more of a personal topic. Thats my justification is anyway xd
