A gust of wind.

A rustle of leaves.

The snap of a twig.

Kane twitched at the sound, ears pricked to the slightest sign of movement. He was the ultimate hunter; nothing escaped his senses...or his efficient hunting methods.

Ahead, a deer grazed on fallen acorns, oblivious to the hungry carnivore nearby. Kane smirked to himself, flicking his tongue over a sharp canine tooth. It had been a while since he'd had anything sizeable to eat. He'd survived on squirrels and the odd fish for a while now, but some venison would sure hit the spot in his poor, empty stomach.

Crouching on all-fours, Kane tensed his muscles, preparing for the leap. One quick pounce was all it would take, if he did it right. And he would. He'd learned all sorts of hunting tricks during his time in the forest alone.

What did it mean? Her guide, the great moth creature had told her it was time to go. Could she really leave the refuge of the Dream World? As she fell she embraced the darkness, calling to her minions to stop her fall. But the moths held back and she fell down, down into the work of waking thought.

"Nooooooo," she yelled as the light began to brighten below her, swallowing her. She threw her arm over her eyes, unable to see as she slipped completely into the conscious world.

To anyone in the area, there was a short "Ooo" from the forest as the fairy landed abruptly on something soft and squishy. At least the portal had opened close to the ground. She looked down to see a blurry headful of silver hair and stared at it curiously, her brain slowly processing it as her eyes adjusting to the harsh light of day.

Kane yowled in surprise, quickly turning to anger as he snarled and swatted at whatever had just DARED fall on him and interrupt his hunt.

Meanwhile, the deer, startled, darted away into the underbrush, living to graze another day.

Thrashing his way free and leaping aside, Kane crouched on all-fours, eying the intruder as he snapped, "What the hell do you think you're doing?!?" His voice was deep and rough from misuse. In fact, he probably hadn't spoken to another living thing since becoming an adult. His voice sounded strange, even to him. It had deepened with age and the roughness was sure to sound harsh to the other Pae.

His hair had grown long and unruly...well, more unruly than it had been before...during his long months alone in the wild. His form was tall and lanky, lean from living on only the meat he could catch and strong from constant athletic activity, spending more time on all-fours than walking upright like most Pae'il. His eyes had taken on a strange, feral light, able to send chills down one's spine with only a glare.

Maya blinked at the figure as her vision cleared. "Wha...?" Her voice was a breathy whisper; she was partly hoarse from screaming. Nothing was making sense to the faery; she could tell it was another Pae'Il, but they were almost foreign to her now. She had become a moth in her own right.

Twitching her wings, she just stared at the other. He seemed somewhat familiar, like a long lost memory from childhood. The coloring was familiar, as was the attitude, but she wondered if she would be able to place it.

Scooting back against a tree, the faery's eyes became less strained in the shadows. She pulled her knees toward her chest and hugged them. "Sorry?"

Kane's eyes narrowed as he studied the Pae'il before him. Something about her seemed familiar. He sniffed the air, trying to place her, even as he noted with disgust that she was one of those...things. Like Cabel. Dang faery things.

He snarled, recognition coming fast as her demeanor changed and she seemed to cower in the shadows, apologizing. Oh Guardians, not HER again! The whiny one!

He shuddered, still growling softly as he glared back at her. "Ya' know, 'sorry' doesn't really answer my question." His tail lashed back and forth angrily, wings flaring slightly making him look more imposing. "The hell you doing out here falling on me? You made me lose dinner!"

Maya sniffled. This was why she was happier in the dream realm, where no one made her cry. "I fell..." Brushing her cheek with her hand, the faery tried not to let the tears fall but speaking made her lips tremble.

"I didn't mean to make you vomit," she whispered as a tear rolled down her indigo cheek. She didn't realize he had been hunting; therefore, the teen interpreted his words to the best of her knowledge. Her wings drooped over her shoulders and her antennae flopped over lifelessly.

Kane blinked in momentary confusion. Had she hit her head or something? The hell was she talking about? When he realized what she meant, he felt like hitting his head on the nearest tree trunk.

"I meant the deer that just ran off, you dingbat! And what do you mean 'you fell?' Fell from where? You just been sitting in the tree or something?"

She started to ramble about the dream realm and her life as caretaker of dreams, before realizing she probably should be a little more prudent with her personal information.

"Sorry, ignore me. I uh... hit my head. Who am I?" She chuckled hesitantly; at best he would think her insane, but maybe that was a good thing.

Maya could make up something, but in order to fall in the manner she had the faery would have had to have struck a wall mid-flight. Instead she decided to clam up. Her gaze drifted down to the forest floor; she could see ants scurrying along unaware of the drama above them.

To the feral male, the scene would have looked something along the lines of:

Girl answers question with 100 miles-a-minute rambling, laughs, apologizes, makes not-funny joke, then goes quiet and stares at the ground.

Eye twitch.

It seemed that every time he ran into this crazy chick, Kane ended up with a pounding headache. What the hell was wrong with her?!? Perhaps it would be better to just get away before she caused any more damage.

"Yeah, okay, I get it. You're crazy and you fell out of nowhere simply to chase off my dinner and give me a headache. Wonderful. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go this way now and see if I can't track down something to eat tonight so I don't starve to death." He pointed off in a random direction over his shoulder. Anywhere away from her. It didn't matter where.

'Let the loony sit there and stare at the ground for all eternity for all I care," he thought to himself as he whirled about, intending to disappear into the shadows of the forest once more.

"P-please... don't leave me," she gasped out as her body convulsed with the aftermath of sobs. She frantically wiped at her dampened cheeks; however, she managed only to smear the now cool, briny tears across her face. Maya looked up at the feral demon with pleading eyes, stretching out her hand toward him. Indeed this was the picture of a damsel in distress if ever there was one.

The last thing the disoriented faery needed right now was to be abandoned; even hostile company was company. The teen had no idea what forest she was in or where her Telrunya home was with her adopted father. All there was for the moth was bright and unrelenting light.

For some unknown reason, Kane actually paused to look back.

Oh, for the love of...

He actually thought his eye was going to start twitching at any moment. Why did this crazy Pae keep showing up to try his already meager patience?!? And why in all Telrunya did she have to be one of those things as well? Cabel was bad enough...why did there have to be more Faery things?

And why did they seem to be so attracted to him?

Tail twitching in agitation, Kane whirled around with a low growl of frustration. He wanted to leave...he really did. So why didn't he? Who knew? He himself couldn't answer this question. Sticking around would only bring him more headaches; he knew that much. And yet...here he was.

"What in the world is wrong with you? Give me one reason why I shouldn't just leave you here so I can go find my dinner. And it better be a damn good one." The demon crossed his arms and leaned back against the trunk of a large tree. His tail continued twitching back and forth, though his wings were folded about his shoulders in a false display of calm. No need in flaring his wings and putting on a show to scare this one. Too easy. No fun in that anyway.

Besides...he really was curious to know what the hell she wanted.

"I... um... can cook?" It was a weak attempt, sure, but she wanted to at least LOOK useful, despite her usually uselessness. Being soft was her weakness, her curse, allowing her to be broken down again and again; maybe spending time in the "real world" would toughen her up.

Her eyebrows arched suddenly in realization, despite it just looking odd to anyone not in the fae's head. That was why she was sent back; Maya was sure of it. Taking in a deep breath through her mouth, she forced it through her nose, the trembling of her shoulders lessening.

"A leader," she began, still a little breathy from her panic attack, "must learn to be strong. Please t-take me with you. I can be helpful... or I can try to be."

A leader?!? She was kidding, right?

Kane sneered, shaking his head. "A leader? And just what kind of leader are you? You don't exactly look like any type of leadership material to me." He gave the whining Faery a quick once-over again, before rolling his eyes dismissively.

There was definitely something wrong with this one. Well, moreso than any of the other Fae things. Something was wrong with her brain, he was sure of it.

However...

Eyes narrowed, Kane shot her an unreadable look.

"What exactly can you cook?"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 03, 2007 3:30 pm

The fae's eyes sunk to the ground again. "I'm not a leader yet," she responded before lifting her head proudly, "but I want to be. That's why I was sent here, to be strong. And you're the strongest pae I've ever met, even when we were kids." She blushed a little; she had at some point during her little inspirational speech remembered their encounter on the beach. Her childhood seemed like a million years past and dredging up memories more arduous than ferrying souls to the afterlife.

Her eyes lit up when he turned back to ask about cooking. "Oh lots of things! Stews, soups, roasts, I've had lots of practice!" It was true. She had learned a lot in her dream realm. In it she was able to watch dreams of master cheffery, though that may be a word she made up at some point, and then practice later with her moth friends watching in curiousity. Though there were times when the food turned the purple pae green, or well a gross brownish green that comes from mixing the colors, Maya eventually started mastering the culinary arts.

Now fighting was a different story...

Although Kane wasn't one for flattery, he had to give her points for acknowledging his strength. Perhaps she wasn't completely clueless...even if she was a bit crazy. A Pae'il with a broken brain could still be observant, right?

"I see," he mused quietly, thinking over what she'd said about cooking. A roast sounded damn good about now, especially considering the venison meal he'd lost thanks to her interruption. "Roasts, you say? Well, you DO owe me a meal, afterall." He smirked, slitted eyes boring into hers. "Alright, here's the deal. If you'll stay quiet long enough for me to catch something this time, you cook it and we'll call it even. Deal?"

Normally, Kane would have been out of here and long gone already, but the promise of a meal? Not that he didn't like raw meat as well as cooked, but a change would be nice, especially if she was as good a cook as she said. Plus...he was practically starving. His stomach had more to say in this situation than his instincts normally would.
