I would really recommend if you want to learn a language like Japanese that you use lots of visual aids.
I really love this game Kanji Trainer PenPen because it's a simple yet effective (and free) matching game...and it has penguins heart It has levels for basic Kana (hiragana and katakana) as well as kanji. I would use this to study for tests.

I would also recommend the book "Kanji Pict-o-grapix" It takes Kanji and equates the symbols to images for the purpose of memorization. I've know many people besides myself to recommend it (including one of my profs), and it can be found in most book stores.

I don't know how much anyone here wanted to learn about the language or how much anyone knows, but I can offer a few little basics to beginners.

First things to learn: Basic phrases, pronunciation, sentence structure, and kana.
All four are very important because you need them to build on.

The first most important word to know in Japanese is DESU (pronounced Dess where the u is virtually dropped)
This word, DESU is the to be verb.
It is used in many sentences.

Examples:

Oishii desu.
It is Taisty.

Namae wa Fujiko desu.
My name is Fujiko.

When you add KA after DESU, the sentece becomes a question. It is like using a question mark at the end of your sentence.

Example:

Onamae wa nan desu ka.
What is your name?

Well, I don't want to overstep on this, but since this was a thread for learning Japanese...
Basically, if anyone finds this helpful and wants me to add more, I'd be happy too. If not, sure thing~

Sorry It's been a while! I tend to disappear a lot XD

I suppose I should start giving some basic expressions!
I'm going to list them in this order:
Japanese Kana, English Romanji, English translation.

If you can't see the Kana (it comes out crazy computer symbols) you need to enable Japanese Character encoding in your browser. That should be in the section under "view" up top.

Kana refers to hiragana and katakana.
Hiragana is used to spell out japanese words. Katakana is used to spell out foreign words.

Romanji is the word used to describe using the Roman alphabet (our alphabet)

You will notice there will be formal and informal usages of statements. Formal statements should be the ones you practice the most. Only use informal statements with friends and NEVER with people older than you or of higher rank (IE Bosses) Use the formal statements when you are first meeting someone.
Formality is very important in Japanese speech. Though anime often breaks these rules, you should not 3nodding

Basic Statements~

はい。 Hai
Yes

いいえ。
Iie
No

ありがとう ございます。
Arigatou Gozaimasu
Thank You Very Much (formal & polite usage)

ありがとう。
Arigatou
Thanks (informal & friendly usage)

すみません。 Sumimasen
I'm sorry/Excuse me

Greetings throughout the day~

おはよう ございます。 Ohayoo Gozaimasu
Good Moring (formal)

おはよう。 Ohayoo
Good Moring (informal)

こんにちは。 Konnichiwa
Good day/Hello

こんばんは。
Konbanwa
Good Afternoon

おやすみなさい。 Oyasumi Nasai
Good Night

さようなら。 Sayoonara
Good Bye

Well, this isn't a very long list, but I don't want to up out too much all at once! Let me know what you think so far. It's no substitute for an actual class, but... sweatdrop
