I have a problem that maybe you could help with. I have super-thick, native-american hair. And lots of it. Even though my hair is only shoulder-length, there is a ton of hair to go around. Every time that I have dyed my hair, instead of just an overall color showing up like on the box, either just the top layer gets dyed, or it looks like just highlights within weeks.
To get my hair professionally dyed would cost about a hundred. Being the frugal, penny-pinching cosplayer that I am, I cannot afford that.
So now I am considering maybe paint? What type? Should I mix a small amount color with hair product? Would it wash out without making me go bald? What other cheap alternatives are there?
sad Help me out here, guys! sad

having long thick and dark hair is hard to dye without having bleached it first. The bleach will strip your hair so that the dye can take purchase. Otherwise, all temps are going to have little effect and wash out rather quickly, so it seems.

I have used the spray in stuff on my hair, which is also thick, but its also light colored. If you don't mind forking out the money for that many cans of spray it, it will at least get you through the day, maybe, but won't look as nice as an actual dye job.

And remember to use in well vented areas.

I have thickish hair too, and the only types of dye you should stay away from are the cheap-o ones. I used one that was blue, and my scalp was blue for at least 3 months. The spray on hair stuff is alright, but if you use too much, it'll stain you scalp for a while (mine turned a blueish-green; used a blue and a green). If no hair dyes work and you still want to look like you have another hair color without forking over a hundred dollars, buy a nice wig for only $30-50 and up, depending on the style and color. It's also easier so you can style it better with gel than your real hair.

you'd most likely have to bleach :/. I have very dark brown hair, and when I tried to dye it purple it didn't work very well at all. bleaching works best, so the color will show up a lot better smile . best of luck!

don't use paint o_o

try to get 2 or more boxes of colour and go layer by layer with your hair.

You definately have to bleach your hair first before any dying.
It's a pain every Asian, Native, or Pacific Islander has to go through for different hair color.
However, for cosplay, you could also just use wigs instead of dying your own hair.

try to find out if there is a salon vocational school in your area and see if they take customers. i go to the one here all the time for cosplay hair stuff. they charge a lot less and use really good products too. at the one here it cost $16 to get your hair dyded (?) one color and they only charged me an extra $5 because i have long think hair.
and a cut is only $3! eek

you probably need a lot of dye to cover all of your hair... i have the same kind of hair (even though im not native american) and, when it was long, it took a few bottles to dye it. also, if youre trying to do a color much lighter than you natural color (as in, not a tinted black) then you will probably have to bleach it first... what color were you planning on doing? if its an unnatural color, i could probably help you find the right dye.

Yea... I have thick and DARK hair.

My hairdresser says I have no other choice but to bleach, but...

I need vivid blonde hair.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: And I'm NOT getting a wig!

bleach is what takes color out of your hair... and it takes a few months to safely bleach dark hair down to a light color blonde... they dod make highlight hairsprays and stuff... but even in small amounts, it looks terrible and wouldnt give good coverage for all of your hair. unfortunately, there isnt any way to lighten your hair without damaging it...

Places like Icing, Claire's (though they're really annoying stores), and Halloween have temporary hair-color spray that's worked pretty well for me (with blond hair) and my friend (with curly black hair) in the past. Halloween Superstores is a great place for stuff like temporary dye and wigs. Thick hair can be hard to hide under wigs, and they can be itchy, but sometimes a wig is the only real choice for staying true to the character. I wore a short blue wig when I still had hair to my bellybutton, and now that my hair's barely to my jaw, it's a lot easier.
But, again, wigs can be itchy -- and hot. I think your best bet might be to get a few cans of hair-coloring spray (they went for about $2-3 per can when Halloween was open nearby) and test it out to see if they help at all. Since your hair is especially dark and thick, you may need a couple of cans.
And if it doesn't work, you can always try again with more spray. The stuff washes out pretty quickly, usually within a washing (even with light hair it'll be gone pretty quickly). You should style your hair before spraying it, and make sure to cover your skin and clothes. If you're wearing a costume, put it on before you spray your hair (which can be nerve-wracking, but not as bad as if you put it on after), drape a towel around your shoulders, and spray carefully, then let it dry, and then shake your head so it all settles and if it flakes it won't land on your costume. Then you can keep the towel around your shoulders as long as you like. Drying times are different, but double the recommended time just to be safe.
Good luck~
