[Verse 1:] Gettin' born in the state of Mississippi Poppa was a Copper and Momma was a Hippy In Alabama she would swing a hammer Price you gotta pay when you pick the Panorama She never knew that there was anything more than poor What in the World does your Company take me for? Black Bandana, sweet Louisiana Robbin' all the banks in the state of Indiana She's a runner, rebel and a stoner Come in everywhere saying baby what you gonna Looking down the barrel of a hot metal 45 Just another way to survive
[Chorus:] California Rest In Peace Simultaneous Release California Show Your Teeth She's my Priestess, I'm your Priest
[Verse 2:] She's a Lover, baby and a fighter Should have seen it coming when it got a little brighter With a name like Dani California Day was gonna come when I was gonna warn ya A little older she was still in another breath I love my baby to death
[Chorus:] California Rest In Peace Simultaneous Release California Show Your Teeth She's my Priestess, I'm your Priest
Who knew the harder side of you Who knew the hardest time to prove Too true to say goodbye to you Too true to say, say, say...
[Verse 3:] Pushed the baby, gifted and a mater One for the now and little for the later Never made it up to Minnesota North Dakota man was a gunnin' for the product Down in the bad lands she was savin' the best for last It only hurts when I'm last, gone too fast
[Chorus:] California Rest In Peace Simultaneous Release California Show Your Teeth She's my Priestess, I'm your Priest [x2]

It's a good song and I'm a RHCP fan but never expected it to be the DN theme song. It has nothing to do with the movie! neutral

neutral The RHCP are big fans of DN, and yes in a way it does fit the movie.. but you'd have to pay attention closely at the lyrics..

Red Hot Chili Peppers are easily my favorite band, so I was absolutely thrilled when it became the theme song for the movie.
When you look deep into it, the lyrics fit the movie rather well.
Pointless explanation time! All of the lyric's interpretations, please note, are related only to Death Note. The lyrics have a completely different meaning without Death Note in the picture, but since it is the theme of the movie, I figured I'd give interpreting it a shot. Oh! And there may be spoilers along the way, but I have whited them out if they are beyond volume five, which is released in the U.S.
Well, in the first verse, we see "Gettin' born in the state of Mississippi/Poppa was a Copper and Momma was a Hippy" Now, this is a little bit obvious. Mississippi is usually considered a rather peaceful place, much like Raito's life before the Death Note. His father is a cop. Easy, right? However, Light's mom was not a hippy.
So! Then he goes to "Robbin' all the banks in the state of Louisiana" could mean how when he first got the Death Note, he was just killing and killing people, probably without nearly as much thought as he had initially. "Looking down the barrel of a hot metal 45/Just another way to survive" refers to those who looked Raito in the face as the model student, but they were looking in the face of death. This became the only way that Raito could "survive"- by killing those who may be a threat to him and his plans for the Death Note.
Now, the chorus. "California rest in peace/Simultaneous Release/California Show Your Teeth/She's my priestess I'm your priest/"
Whoo boy! Lotta interpretations here.
California is thought of as a generally happy area- the sun, the surf, what have you. Much like Raito! His facade of good and all of that fools people, but he "shows his teeth" in the face of thsoe- i.e. L, Misa at times, et cetera- who threaten his plans for that whole "world domination" thing. "She's my priestess, I'm your priest" refers to "Kira" and Misa, who like a priest, would wish purify those with thier teachings.
Verse 2! This one will be FUN! The whole verse refers to Misa!
"She's a lover, baby and a fighter/Should have seen it coming when it got a little brighter" Misa came at an ideal time for Raito, when things were going well for him with the Death Note- i.e. "When it got a little brighter." She loves him, she acts like a baby, and is one heckuva fighter. "A little older she was still in another breath/I love my baby to death." Raito planned to kill Misa in the beginning when he met her, but put on a masquerade of love to keep her satisfied. And yet she was still alive no matter how he persisted. But he still intended to kill her. So, he loves his "baby to death."
This next part after the second chorus is L!
"Who knew the harder side of you/Who knew the hardest time to prove/too true to say goodbye to you/too true to say, say, say..."
"Who knew the harder side of you" refers to L's harder side. The side that will do anything to stop Kira to the point of being childish and stubborn. The side that would incriminate any who were in relation or could be in relation to Kira. Now, Raito, while he is still undoubtedly an evil killing machine type of person, is still human, thus the next lines, "Who knew the hardest time to prove/too true to say goodbye to you" This could refer to his- SPOILER!regret towards killing L after it happened, even though it was what he worked for, at the "hardest time to prove." Death became "Too true to say goodbye to you" in other words, death was so absolute that Raito had a hard time really accepting it, let alone dwelling on it, as is applicable for all murders he's committed.
VERSE THREE IS JUST ONE BIG OL' SPOILER!
"Pushed the baby, gifted and a mater/ one for the now and a little for the later" Well, this isn't much of a spoiler, but this could refer to Raito's other girlfriends while pushing Misa- the "baby"- away. "Never made it up to Minnesota/North Dakota man was gunnin' for the product" could be Raito never reaching his goal with the Death note and getting beaten, hence the "gunnin'" "It only hurts when I'm last, gone too fast" could be part of Raito's desire for the him to rule the earth and he probably regrets his plan not being carried through rather than dying. His life, being only over twenty (I believe that's how old he is) has "gone too fast," being relatively young, because he chose the Path o' the Death Note. (tm) XD
So there you have it! That's why Dani California ISN'T the most random song to put in the movie ever! =D YAY!
