Good idea for a thread! We're starting to plan for Z's first birthday. I'm trying to decide whether to have a huge shindig or just a small party. Normally I'd just do a small party, but my sister is getting married in October and so we'll be in the area where both my parents and my IL's live. Also, all of Tetravus's extended family lives in the area. Alot of my extended family will be in town for the wedding so we could have the birthday party after the wedding and have a chance to show her off to alot of people who either haven't seen her at all or haven't seen her much.

Anyway, I've been thinking about doing a bug themed party. One thing I want to do is send an index card with each invitation and ask people to decorate it with bugs and bring it to the party or send it to us if they can't come. Then I can put together a bug book for Zoe.

Having had four kids I've been through a LOT of birthday parties! Here are some of the things that I've done that have worked beautifully!

Younger Kids:

Pirate Theme - Make pirate hats and eyepatches with construction paper and shoe strings! Create a 'treasure chest' with a shoebox (or something bigger) and fill with the party prizes. We found some great 'gold deblunes' at wal mart! Watch Treasure Planet or Muppets Treasure Island, or have it in the background playing.

We learned some 'sea shanties' and taught them to the kids. That was a lot of fun. And we had a 'burried treasure' icecream cake (put candies inside of partially melted icecream and then freeze them again)

~*~

Fantasy Theme - My husband and I are arists so we drew dragons and a castle on poster board and put it up around our kitchen. We used glitter for 'fairy dust' and put it in tiny bottles and put them on necklaces for the kids (you can also buy premade fairy dust but it's more expensive) as prizes.

Some of the games we played were: Come into my castle - Monsters and Maidens and Dragon Slayer (if you'd like instructions on these let me know!)

~*~

Movie Madness! - All the kids had to dress up as their favorite movie character and were called by that name through the whole party (made it LOTS easier on me!) - I had a bag of goodies and made up some movie trivia for a game! (with my husband working for Hollywood Video it was really easy to come up with the questions!) We also sang movie songs ^^

Older Kids:

How to host a mystery - These are about $30 and LOADS of fun for kids in their teen years! It's for a smaller group and a little more intimate, but my daughter and her friends loved it! We played the 'dinner with a vampire' one and it was oodles of fun!

Skating Party - These are nice cause you can have all of the stuff at the skating rink (or bowling alley .. whichever floats your boat)

Sleepovers - I've only done this with my daughters so far ehe .. but I had little goodie bags for the girls that had nail polish, stickers, lip gloss and barrets in them. During sleepovers I -always- have the kids make their own personalized pizzas (lots of fun and takes quite a bit of time!) and french toast in the morning (french toast is easy and cheap and can feed a LOT of people!)

PHEW!

Some never fail games that I've done!

'Shoe Find' = split the kids into two groups (if you have enough of each do boys vs girls) and make them pile their shoes up in the middle of the room. Take one kid from each team and blind-fold them - turn them around 10 times then put them near the shoes. The two kids compete against each other trying to find their shoes and be the first to put them on their feet! (be sure to put in some 'extra' shoes from around the house or the two kids who are last get it way too easy!)

'Simon Says' - an oldie but a goodie!

'Duck Duck Goose' - I suggest this only during an 'outside' party - again ... another oldie but a goodie.

and of course, the ever popular Pinata!

Okay ah! I think I'm done now! But I do have tons of other ideas if anyone's interested! I just think I've blabbed on enough for one day!
