Calamity sought out his slighty cryptic friend, Aruna. Much had changed since their first slightly bizarre meeting weeks earlier. Not only had he grown into a strapping and headstrong stallion, but Aruna's odd behavior had mellowed into something equally witty, but much less strange.

He enjoyed the snippets of conversation they managed to exchange in daily life, and on this lazy summer afternoon, he could think of no more pleasureable company than the mare.

He meandered the warm woods, scanning the trees for a sign of her teal feathers of brown coat.

Aruna trotted through her forest home, humming softly. She had taken up humming and/or singing a couple weeks earlier, when she had met a new friend who called himself The Phantom. Oh, she knew his real name, but she had promised to never tell anyone. As she trotted, slowing into a walk, she began to wonder how Calamity was doing.

Her humming ceased as she thought to the random times when they encountered to chat. Well. They were quite fun, she had to admit. He had grown stronger; but she wanted to get a better look at the shorty, seeing as he was all grown up and strutting about happy with all the attention he seemed to be getting.

She silently admitted she was jealous of the other mares that had known him longer, but she pushed away the feeling as soon as she had admitted it. There was no need to tell the Kalona what she felt; he would probably start strutting about arrogantly again... She rolled her eyes and laughed softly. Oh yes. That's what he would do if he found out.

If he ever found out, that is.

"Rue!"

He called out quite uncharacteristically as he finally noticed her in a clearing several yards away. He laughed at the thought of her nickname. Aruna wasn't terribly long or difficult to pronounce. But with the actually meaning of "rue"...regret...he laughed, hoping she'd appreciate the harmless dig.

"Get over here, mare. I don't chase things...ever."

He winked and stepped towards her, flipping his mane over his shoulder and settling his wings. "What are you up to this fine day?"

He stood beside her and walked, smirking at his ability to look down on the mare now. More than just socially, that is.

"Well whaddaya know," she said dryly, looking over at Calamity when she heard him call. "The shorty grew." She grinned, however, at the nickname he gave her. "Thanks for the nickname, M'lord, 'ppreciate it," she finished breezily as she walked towards him. "It'd be fair humorous if you did chase things, m'lord, but you're too dignified, aren't you?"

Aruna had taken up a strange accent when speaking with Calamity, but she now dropped her strange speech to properly greet him. "Just thinking about stallions and other things, that's what I've been up to," She said as she winked at him. "But I swear you have the ability to read my mind every time I think about you, m'lord, because you always manage to appear as soon as your name even shows up in my mind."

She glanced up at him, secretly admiring how handsome he had gotten. He had gotten pretty tall, too, so "shorty" was an unfortunate nickname for him now. She'd still call him that if the opportunity ever rose again, though, if he acted like a colt, but with the way he was acting now, she could tell he had matured greatly.

It's nice to see that M'lord Shorty has gotten better, she thought with a silent laugh. And not just in personality, either.

"What makes you think I don't wander around all day long in hopes of catching that glint in your eye that means you're thinking about me?"

He laughed out loud and shook his mane in hazy summer glow. "Wouldn't that be a dream come true, M'lady? But alas, I come with a purpose."

He raised an eybrow, his green eyes glittering in the sunshine. "It's no secret that you have something going on with Rahu. And because I'm above such base things like gossip, I've come to ask you myself. What could you possibly want with that shallow, vainglorious excuse for a stallion, Rue? You're strange and a bit rude at times, but you can do better."

His upper lip twitched slightly, and he continued. "I mean obviously you're nowhere near my level, but you're certainly above his. Most mares are."

He winked and swshed his tail, triumphant that he'd so easily coated his compliment with yet another insult. Too bad she actually liked that sort of thing. Strange bird.

Aruna allowed a smirk to appear on her face. "Ah, finally, someone with sense to ask the source. I hardly care about that fool anymore. He's not worth my time, and you're right--I'm above him." She nipped at him teasingly, however, when he said she was still out of his sights. "Tch. I think your ego got blown when all those other mares ogled at you."

Her mouth twitched to show she was amused. "M'lord, you truly are a confident one. Do you think I'd have gone for you? 'Tis true I wanted to see your glorious fully grown form, but who's to say I liked you as such? Of course there are others who are better." Aruna moved to the other side of Calamity so that he didn't notice her scar, which she'd aptly named "Rahu's Mark" because it had been he who had struck her.

She winked back at him. " 'Tis strange to see you so tall. I suppose calling you shorty is more insulting now than it was then, yes? I'll keep calling you "m'lord" then..." She flicked her tail, smirking, though her golden eyes glittered in humor.

"That's going to get old very fast, Rue." Not wholly unobservant, he noticed something amiss but held his tongue about the new mark. No need getting caught ogling her, or anything of the sort. It was for a later conversation, especially since there was much more interesting prattle in progress.

He stepped close to her and looked haughtily down on the mare. "Why on earth wouldn't I think you like me? I'm young, and I'm strong and smart enough to withstand even your sharp tongue and give you a taste of your own medicine. But there's always the possibility I've misread you."

Lowering his head within inches of her own, his bright emerald eye bore into hers. "Feel free to prove me wrong right now."

"Fine, fine. I'll stop," she said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. She was pretty sure that by now he had caught her scar, but figured he was going to ask her later. Calamity was a very sharp stallion, one of few who she respected the most--like she would ever tell him she respected him. Heh.

"Why on earth indeed?" she quoted, smirking. She didn't move from her spot as he stepped closer, looking down at her as she looked up. "A taste of my own medicine. Give it then; I'm sure I could use a bit of it. Misread me? Whatever have you misread about me?"

She blinked golden eyes as his piercing gaze met hers. "What should I do? I'm not sure--exactly--what there is to prove you wrong... oh wait. That's right. I don't like you. At least, not in the way you're suggesting. Heh." She winked at him and moved away a bit. Hey, she wanted her space--the only stallion to ever get that close to her--well, stallions, was her family and Delano!

Well, Rahu, too, but he didn't particularly like closeness. "Now, my question is, why were you out to seek me, if not to learn the truth from those rumors abound in our homeland?"

"Why indeed!" He laughed out loud at Aruna. He liked her a great deal. Not that way, but she was intriguing to a fault...impossible to read. "For rumors and rumors! And perhaps a bit of friendly conversation."

He raised his eyebrows and sighed. "So, you meticulously mating-minded mare, what have you been doing with your time? Jumping from cliffs, perhaps? Or have you actually learned to fly?"

She raised her brow when he laughed aloud, and then joined in with her own soft laugh along with a smirk. "Agreed. Rumors and rumors, and friendly conversation? Perfectly normal to seek out someone, especially for someone like you, eh?"

She stared at him at his description of her, and then frowned. "What have I been doing... ah. I've been out and about by myself thinking, hoping to not be attacked by predators... Jumping from cliffs was a long time ago, though I have learned to fly..." She grinned, letting the sentence fade. Whichever way Calamity took it was completely up to him.

She had no wings, but she could fly. He was smart--would he understand her meaning?

Calamity paused, regarding Aruna carefully. "Well, lacking any other creature here of a similar intellect to my own, you are the next best thing, Aruna. A compliment, assuredly. But...my wingless bird has learned to fly?"

He paused and studied her again. He was expected to understand her meaning, then? Perhaps sometimes she gave him a little too much credit. Cal marvelled at her wittiness for a few slow moments as he tried to figure out what she meant. He could come up with no suitable response, and his surrender to her riddle of sorts could be read easily in his bright green eyes.

"Alright, I'll bite," he sighed. "How do you fly, m'dear?"

He cocked his head to the side, more than curious as to her reponse.

She eyed him up and down for a minute, trying to evaluate his compliment/insult. "Is that so? I suppose I shall take it as a compliment. I'm flattered, Calamity," she said, smiling slightly. "And yes, O noble prince of the Kalona, I have learned to fly, even as I do not have wings." Perhaps he understood what she was saying when she said that, but the look in his green eyes spoke of otherwise.

His next words merely comfirmed her assumption, and she smiled wider, nearly mischievous-like. "You'll bite? I'm afraid I'd rather stay away from your sharp teeth, my friend. However... how to explain? What is that feeling you get when you first launch yourself into the skies? Excitement? Amazement? Pure joy? It's my emotions all jumbled together in a strange way, Cal, and that's how I've learned to fly. Nonsense as it sounds, it's true."
