Adults just didn't understand. Maybe they were too old to, Harper pondered.
Whatever the reason, she didn't like the looks they gave her when they saw her strolling down the grocery isles alone, pushing a cart full of food. It wasn't her fault her 'parent' couldn't shop worth anything. Last time they'd gave her the money she'd come back with sixty apples. Ugh.
In response to the looks Harper would glare at them until they moved their eyes elsewhere. She may have not been able to reach the handle bars of the cart, but she could push it just fine, thank you.
Seven was plenty old enough to go shopping on your own if you were smarter than most adults in the store.
"Alright, um..." Her yellow eyes narrowed together at the boxes of cereal, and came to land on a sugarless one near the top. "How am I gonna reach that...?"

Donat clung to the box of cereal Kumoru handed him, then held it out at arm's length and tried to puzzle out what the box said on it. Just four letters, so this should be easy, right?
"K- ... k-hecks?" he ventured, and looked up at his father with bright blue eyes.
Kumoru stopped the cart and turned to the shelves to scan the cereals for something that might interest his children and not get them too sugar high. "No, remember, 'c' and 'h' together make a different sound."
"Ch, right? Checks? Chex?" Donat grinned again.
"There you go."
The mage returned to the cart to pull it a little further down the aisle. Since when did cereal need chocolate /and/ marshmellows in it, anyway?
Donat leaned to the side a bit in the cart baby seat to peer around his father as he noticed another cart with a girl beside it. Did she have wings? No one else in the grocery store had wings. His brother had wings, though. Maybe Kumoru knew her?
"Daddy, who's that?" he inquired, pointing at the girl for a moment before sticking his finger in his mouth.
"I don't think I've seen her before," Kumoru told the goat-boy. He noticed the box of Kix on the shelf above her, though. Not too bad as cereals went, as he remembered, and at least it was not full of candy.
"Are you looking at those, too?" he asked the girl, pointing at the Kix and wondering why she seemed to be shopping unattended. "Need me to get a box down for you?

Harper tilted her head and looked over at him. He didn't look like someone who'd kidnap her if she spoke to him. Besides, he had a kid with him. One of the D-Corp ones, she assumed. If it looked the least bit like an animal she immediately thought so, and hadn't been wrong except in the case of her cousin.
"If you would, please," the hawk answered, glaring at the cereal box as if it sat that high just to defy her. She spoke so 'properly' it tended to startle people.

Kumoru smiled a little, surprised but pleasantly so at the girl's manner of speech. He fetched the box for her with little trouble, and handed it to her before getting a second for himself.
Interesting, that she had wings. He wondered if perhaps she had come from the same place Donat had.
The goat-boy leaned forward a little in the cart, waved to the girl and called out, "You got pretty wings. Like my brother's." Then he beamed cheerfully.
Donat had to get closer, though, to really be included in the conversation. He twisted around to drop the Chex into the back of the cart, then grasped the cart handle and pondered how to get himself over there from inside the cart.
Fortunately, Kumoru was bringing the Kix to the cart, so when he placed the box in with the other groceries, he dragged the cart down closer to the other girl.
"This is Donat, by the way," he told her, introducing her to the grinning goat-child who was waving at her again from his seat.

In most cases, Harper would wrinkle her nose back at any introduction to a child her age or younger. Despite being one, she generally didn't like child. Other children.
But this one she didn't mind so much. Particularly because of the compliment concerning her wings. "Lovely," the girl said in monotone, then held her hand out toward the goat-child. "It's Harper. Pleasure."

Still grinning broadly, Donat leaned down from his seat to take Harper's hand in his own four-fingered one. "Hiya, miss Harper," he said, easily remembering his manners with his father standing right there.
"Are you helping go shopping, too?" Donat asked her, seeming to take no notice of her monotone.

That actually got a smile from the girl, and quite a bright one. She even chuckled lightly as she shook the odd hand up and down. "You've got a good vocabulary for as young as you look," she said, then glanced up at Donat. "Me? If by helping you mean doing the shopping, then yeah."

"Do shopping? I can do shopping," Donat told her proudly. Then he leaned over to the shelf, grabbed a box of Cocoa Puffs, and twisted around to drop it into his cart. Then he turned back to Harper. "See?"
Kumoru laughed a little and sighed, figuring it best not to hurt Donat's feelings by removing the sugary cereal from the cart. He handed Donat the list and told him, "We need to get things that the list says because we really need them."
He could not help but feel a touch of fatherly pride at Harper's complimenting his son's vocabulary. He did, after all, read to the boy whenever he could.

It took lots of willpower, but Harper managed not to wrinkle her nose back in disgusted. She didn't understand how children could eat things like that and not cringe. Her sister had said she was weird, but it was them who weren't normal if you asked her!
"Yes," she said to Donat, managing another smile. "So what is he?" the girl asked, turning to the father and peering up at him curiously.

The mage looked confused for a moment before he realized what she was asking about. "Oh, he's a cave goat. Baleric Islands cave goat," he then replied, adding under his breath, "I should remember since I had to go get the bone from the museum myself...."
Donat glanced between his father and Harper, eyes wide with curiousity.
