Sometimes it spans deeper than just stealing the photo. My friend and I were talking to this girl in georgia with a baby boy....we found out about 5 months later after my friend had visited her and given her hand me down clothes and even a little money (because she was a single mom) That the child was not hers it was a little girl that she was nannying for at her own home. It all came out because she told us the baby had died, with an unbelievable story. She did that because she had been caught by someone who was going to tell the babies parents. At the end of it we found out the little girl was fine and that the parents were pressing charges on the woman who did that.
I have been thinking alot about this lately. SOmeone tried to steal my sons image about 8 months ago on livejournal. I find it disgusting but also wonder what posesses people to do it. It is a fairly common occurance and makes me question every detail when I meet someone new online with a kid or 2. It also angers me becasue I feel I cant post my sons picture but I dont want to stop. ANyways here are a few of my questions to get the discussion going on this topic.
Has this ever happened to you?
Why do you think people do it?
What would you do if you found out someone was doing it to you?

Mothers get a lot of attention. It's something that immediately sets them apart from "other people" that others can take an interest in and ask questions about. For boring people, or insecure people, I can see why they would crave this kind of attention.
I think it's related to the pregnant girls who love all the attention of being pregnant and then suffer terrible depression once the child is born and starts being the center of that attention that used to be theirs.
I think it's extremely sad and I think it's telling that this kind of crime is so common.
It's a shame, and I can completely understand your fear. I think it's a shame that this girl took advantage of your friend, especially since that's one person who will not help those who are really in need in the future.

Has this ever happened to you? No I am not a mom. I am just 14 lol
Why do you think people do it? I am not sure. I think maybe something leads up to it. Maybe they were pregnant and lost a kid and just wanted to keep on with "being a mom" but thats no excuse to steal a baby's picture(s). Its just wrong and shouldnt happen. I think the people also do it because they need some pro help with their mental health and like Kukushka said, they crave attention.
What would you do if you found out someone was doing it to you? I would probally get very angry but Idk if I would press charges right away. I would just make sure the person who did it gets some help at a mental place or something. If that person refused, I would probally go ahead with the charges and that would teach them a lesson.

I would probably take them to court though to get a court order that makes sure they retract all statements and pictures that refer to my child.

Thanks Jessica Congrats on the new baby, as far as the fear we all share just post thumbnails of pictures those arent worth stealing to those people, also get a photbucket account because after a few days of having the post with the picture up to share you can delete the picture in your album and nobody can see it anymore.

It is sad when that happens, I think that is a big trigger for post partum. All I know is that personally I wanted my son to feel lots of love so I since he was in the hospital for so long I would just tell people who asked "Is there anything I can do?" To come with me to visit him so I had a little support emotionally and he would get lots of love.
