The main purpose of this thread is to share a list of all the different versions of the much beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. My current list is small but with some help this could serve as a good reference for people looking for the music.

I've been looking for alternate recordings of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera for myself but I have no qualms about sharing the songs that I have with other people who want them. The ones that I have will be in dark red.

I'm trying to add to the list as well as my collection so if anyone who can help me out with either I'd be really happy and if anyone has any information on the French recording I would be eternally grateful.

Complete Recordings or Collections:
The Original London Cast Recording
The Original Movie Soundtrack
Tribute to the Phantom of the Opera (London Festival Ensemble and London Westend Singers)

Compilation CDs Including Phantom Songs:
Screen Hits of Andrew Lloyd Webber (Think of Me, Angel of Music pt. 1 & 2, Phantom of the Opera, All I Ask of You, Music of the Night, Masquerade, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Point of No Return)
Love Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber [2002 compilation] (Think of Me)

Single Songs:
Music of the Night (Alternate Lyrics)
Phantom of the Opera (Alternate Lyrics; Performed by Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley -- it was a promo music video)
Phantom of the Opera (Performed by Nightwish)

Phantom Related CDs and Songs:
Broadway's Fabulous Phantoms (different performances of songs by previous Broadway phantoms; not ALW songs though)

There has never been a French recording of Phantom of the Opera, musical or otherwise, I'm afraid. Or at least, in my experience, I have never, ever come across one. I would have thought they would have made one for the film, but I've never found it.

Are you looking at recordings in other languages, too? There are only two official English cast recordings of Phantom: the original London cast recording and the original Canadian cast recording.

Beyond that, they have cast albums in German, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Hungarian, and Spanish just to name a few.

As for the promotional single you're talking about in the last part of your list, Sarah Brightman sings with Steve Harley, the man who was considered for Phantom before Webber found Crawford.

Ugh... Stever Harley is terrible, haha.

The French track on the movie DVD sounds really good too. I guess if I have time one day I can maybe figure out how rip it to my computer. The fact that there's no French recording is tres lame seeing as it's set in France.

I'm not too interested in other languages for myself, but I can put them on the list. Can you think of any other ones that they offer albums of?

It's not particularly lame considering how the French generally don't like Phantom of the Opera or musicals. The best way to rankle your tour guide if you ever get to go to the Palais Garnier is ask them if you can go to Box 5, or start prattling about Phantom of the Opera. Yes, I've known some French 'phans' before, but for the most part... the other problem is that musicals never do very well in France because the French are so 'anti-musical', or at least that's been the impression I've always gotten. I could be wrong. In any case, you win some, you loose some, and then you go drive East to Germany where they are the kings of musical theatre.

As for more albums, I'm sure they do, but... if you're going for 'single songs', this is going to be a really, really, really long list. There have been so many people who have done singles of Phantom, not to mention the personal albums of many of the actors and actresses who have been in the show. Just off the top of my head, I can think of... Let's see, Blink 182 did a cover for the title song, so did Me First and Gimme Gimmes. There's the Harajuku cover for the title song, you've already got the Nightwish and... I know there's a cover Robert Marion did in French of the title song, too.

As for the promotional music videos you're talking about, along with Music of the Night and Phantom of the Opera, there is also an All I Ask Of You with Sarah Brightman and another fellow whose name escapes me at the moment, not to mention another Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again (though it was startlingly unremarkable.)

And that isn't even nicking the surface. I could go into Michael Crawford solo albums, ex-Phantoms from Broadway, West End, and the tours, etc.

It's kind of exhausting. neutral

I've only known one person who is french who likes Phantom, she lives in France lucky girl. But the London cast is pretty good, Crawford can sing...and he's a commedian too I've heard. I prefer movie recording though, as for you finding it in French good luck.

He certainly is. Watch "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em" and "Hello, Dolly" and your perception of a dark and brooding Phantom will be destroyed forever. XD

Ok: I've the first two collections for PotO, heard the alternatives of both NightWish and Sarah Brightman/Steve Harley promo...there's another one in which there was a concert and Antonio Bandareras (corret my spelling if I'm wrong about the last name) was singing the phantom's part...and that's it.

That Antonio Bandaras one is so horrible!!!! He can't even say the words correctly... Sorry if I'm bitter towards him... they were (for the longest time) trying to cast him as Erik in the movie... I have not cared for him since I heard him kill (yes, kill) the title song....

Anyway, for those of you interested in a slightly different take on the story, Iced Earth's The Phantom Opera Ghost is pretty good... it leans more towards the dark love side, but it's intersting.

On a couple of Sarah Brightman's cds there are recordings of her singing The Music of the Night

Hang on I need to go through my iPod to find all the other versions of songs I have on here.... *starts rumaging*

There is a really cool phan recording that several people did that you can download.... I found it through Phantom Phans. net or something like that...
the guy's name is Jason Kolman (I'm not sure on the Spelling). The do a bunch of different songs that are Phantom related and just awesome.

There is an fun techno remix with just a female singing it as a solo, it is by Harajuku... But most phans know it as The Techno Phantom...

hmmmm... *looks for more*

Most actors (not all) who have played Phantom for long periods of time have out their own cd, and normally it has Music of the Night on it...
I know Brad Little, Ted Keegan, Frac D'Ambrosio, and Howard McGillin all have solo cds which has that song... (Howard McGillin's rendishen of it is wonderful.. he combines Music of the Night with Unexpected Song-from Song&Dance, by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It sounds wierd, but it works brilliantly.

On the Barbra Streisand cd- Duets, she sings with Michael Crawford The Music of the Night

Michael Ball (the original Marius from Les Miserables) has it on his cd- Center Stage... but don't listen to the main theme song! He over does it and the instruments are off... But his Music of the Night makes up for it...

I could swear they had... neutral or maybe the version I downloaded was just ripped off of someone's computer.
They did record it in Spanish, Italian, and German with the new orchestrations. And the Spanish language track doubles as a Spanish Cast Recording because they used the new Madrid cast as the voice doubles.

Did you know that Uwe Kroger does Erik on the new German? xd I was delighted.

But that brings the Non-English cast recordings up to about 14. IIRC it's;

Mexican
Korean
Netherlands
Austrian
German
German movie
Italian movie
Spanish movie
Swedish
Dutch
Hungarian
Japanese
2nd Japanese
10th Anniversary Japanese.

Any more I'm missing?

The only one I know that isn't on the list is the Original Canadian Cast: Highlights Recording with Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine.

How I loathe Colm Wilkinson, he annoys me enough as Valjean in Les Miz, let alone as a character I love; I try to forget that the Canadian recording exists *sulks because her own country's performance sucks*
